    Great mod! I love seeing old office PC’s given a new life rather than ending up in a recycling center. These are great for people just getting into PC gaming that can’t afford a high end system. The only thing I would do different is opening up the back where the PSU is a bit more. Could have some overheat issues if it can’t push the hot air out. Maybe just a few drilled holes. Other than that, solid build! Can’t wait to see more vids!

      @WiltshireTutorials  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good suggestions! I was given the suggestion of edge moulding/trim earlier and I'm currently looking into it. I also had debated over tinting the acrylic. I'm still undecided on that. Lastly, I did think of ventilating the top of the case and putting exhaust/intake fans on the top. Unfortunately, there isn't enough clearance for fans at the top. Maybe with slim fans I could get away with it. I'll have to order one in and measure things to find out.

    Speaking of modding a case... (not OEM case's like this)
    So many cheap cases have a major design flaw. The front panel blocks the front intake fans.
    It's so weird that they are made like that, I modded my case to expose the front fans.
    My temps went down dramatically. Noice!

    You should definitely make a video about that.

    • @WiltshireTutorials
      @WiltshireTutorials  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Welcome to PC gaming. Hope you enjoy it! Yes, most case designers have gone more with aesthetics than performance. So, more front panels are either solid tempered glass or have small intakes on the sides. You can find airflow editions of cases that have mesh, instead of tempered glass or a solid front panel. Stellar job, as always. Also, congrats on getting a spike in subs again! Thought the Verge thing happened a while back, weird it's resurfaced, but hey, as long as the channel's growing, it's great. As always, I got a couple cool ideas to further "prettify" this build, just a few suggestions.
    That piece of the side panel you cut out? Try bending it and making a PSU shroud. If you want to keep the up facing PSU fan, just cut that side panel and bend it so it only covers the "rat's nest", or just drill holes over the fan, might look cooler if you're up for it.
    Needless to say, if you went RGB and wanna go all out, there are some cool 80mm and 90mm RGB fans I found on AliExpress, I can link em if you're interested. Also on there is a good and cheap braided extension cable set for like $12, I used it in my project and it's awesome.
    Speaking of my project, it's almost complete, got a few small things to add, but I'll share some of the pics here. To remind you, this is all 2013/2014 components from my old rig, pimped for today's standards with mostly bought cheap RGB and other guff from AliExpress, also a modded GPU AIO cooler and a very shitty and restrictive gaming case. Proved to be quite a challenge... Anyway, here are the pics imgur.com/a/ULHAaj5
    Wanted to log the whole build and AIO modding process, but it was so damn hot and I usually work without a shirt, so that would've been awkward, lol. Anyway, hope you like it.

    • @WiltshireTutorials
      @WiltshireTutorials  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks man! That Verge video is the gift that keeps on giving!
      I pondered over the idea of doing a PSU cover/shroud. Not sure if it would affect the airflow in the case or not. Might be worth testing the thermals with one in it vs not having it. I'll look into maybe 3D printing one out of plastic. Having more metal near components may not be a good thing lol.
      I did look into getting some RGB fans for the build on Aliexpress. However, it would've taken 2-3 weeks to get to me. I wanted to film the video as soon as possible and couldn't wait that long. Even if they didn't have sleeved or braided cables, I would just sleeve the cables myself. I did that for the this Optiplex build for the CoolerMaster fan, the SATA power extension cable for the SSD and the 8-pin to 24-pin motherboard cable.
      Dude! You're build is looking pretty good! Definitely dig the look of the PC. Crazy to see what kind of parts you can find on Aliexpress sometimes! Keep me posted with more images of your progress on your build!

      @@WiltshireTutorials Glad you liked the build! Yeah, just need it to run properly and do benchmarks, other than that, it's almost complete. I'll post some benchmarks once it's fully up and running.
      I understand not wanting to wait long for stuff from Ali, it literally took me 2 months just because I was waiting for all the parts, still waiting for that 780 replacement...
      Also, braiding cables yourself is admirable, I tried and it's tedious as heck, especially if it's PSU extension ones. Though AIO cooler modding wasn't easy either, but pretty fun. That's why I like watching your vids, really cool and challenging stuff you're doing. Been subbed for a year now, here's to many more :)

    Great video... I buy an off lease office pc every time I see one for a dirt cheap price locally. I dont cut in any windows because the stock motherboard and cooler are just ugly. However, there is some rubber trim you can get on Amazon that sticks right next to the rough edges and makes the cut out look more finished. Also adding 4 feet to the bottom will let you have a bottom mounted intake fan pulling in cool air. Hot air rises and that is why a second fan on the top of the case is perfect, plus they make all sorts of fan grill covers to camouflage rough dremel cuts. An i7 with 16gb of ram a 120gb ssd and a 1tb mechanical drive paired with a gtx 1650 oc ddr6 model makes an awesome cheap gaming pc. I do not upgrade the power supplies to add better graphics cards however. If I'm going to buy a new psu and adapters I feel like I might as well build from scratch.

    It's refreshing to see someone doing actual case modding in this day and age. If I could make a suggestion, radius your corners with a 1" radius and use rubber door edge molding on the cut edge to give the window opening a nice finished appearance. The narrower the molding the tighter of a radius it will make. Anyway, keep up the good work and I hope you go far.

    More Pics from the Optiplex Mod!! imgur.com/a/Obh7Bbe
    As you can see, I still have a couple odds and ends to wrap up (front panel where optical drive used to be. Also got some red overspray on the black half of the front panel. Going to paint that whole side black anyway to get rid of silver tag. Also will need to find some feet to raise the system some. If I can muster up the courage, I will probably paint the motherboard (not quite there yet..lol) And finally, I will have to do something about the cables at the bottom.)
    I want to add a vinyl graphic to the plexiglass window (not sure what yet though.) I going to install some mesh wiring at the bottom over the hole for the PSU. I bought EZDIY-FAB RGB for the ram, but had no where to connect them. I will have to find some sort of controller, since I can't seem to install them on the board.
    I also plan to pick up a I7-6700K to go along with the ZOTAC 1070. it actually runs really well with the I5-6500, but I want to use this as a Photoshop rig, so the multithreading should help a lot with that.
    Anyway, I'm pretty happy with the results. Please leave comments on what you guys think. This is my first time trying anything this ambitious with a computer. Thanks!!

    • @WiltshireTutorials
      @WiltshireTutorials  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well done! Coming along pretty good so far! I would high recommend getting some rubber feet to raise the tower up a bit. That SFX PSU needs to breathe. The RAM is pretty easy, if you bought the kit with the remote control. Any 5V RGB controller will work just fine actually. Just power the controller via SATA power and you're good to go. Remember, the Optiplex motherboard DOES NOT support the K variants of the CPUs! The draw too much power for the chipset to handle. It can handle CPUs only up to 65W. A 6700K will not work. I suggest going for the 6700 instead.

    • @mrich70
      @mrich70 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@WiltshireTutorials Hahaha!! Unfortunately, by the time you responded, my 6700k from Ebay was already on the way! I will probably just sell it and buy a 6700 instead. I didn't think about the power draw, I just figured that it wouldn't be over clock-able on this board. However, I have added feet to the bottom of the case which, as you said, has helped the PSU to breathe much better. Thanks and Stay Tuned!!

    • @WiltshireTutorials
      @WiltshireTutorials  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mrich70 you could try it. But I don't think the motherboard will post with it. If it does post, it may not be able to keep the CPU stable under full load.

    • @mrich70
      @mrich70 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@WiltshireTutorials So actually, I was able to actually boot up the pc with the 6700k and do things like web browsing. However, when you put it under load for any period of time, it would crash. So I switched it out for a 6700 which arrived this past week. The 6700 isn't as fun but I'm getting some pretty good bench scores with it. The best I've gotten so far is 13231 in firestrike. I'm pushing the Zotac to see if I can reach close to the 15000 you got (I don't have the 'ti' , so probably won't beat your score.) Anyway, I was wondering if you had any issues using the splitter on the rear fan? I'm using a splitter on the rear fan pins. i have the rear fan and a front fan attached to it. However, when I do start up, the computer goes into Dell Support Assist and does diagnostics which says that I have a failing part and it identifies the fan. I will admit that I did not have this problem until I put in the 6700k. But now it persist even though I'm not using the 6700k anymore. I've tried to disable through the BIOS, but no luck so far. Any suggestions on how I might be able to get around this?

    • @WiltshireTutorials
      @WiltshireTutorials  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I figured that would happen. It just draws too much power for the chipset to handle. If it were possible to undervolt the CPU, it could possibly work, in theory.

      Small Form Factors will never support a normal ATX, or even SFX PSU. Not enough room in the chassis. You may be able to adapt a PSU to the motherboard using an adapter for the 24-pin. Depending on the layout/form factor of the motherboard in the 3010, you may not be able to transplant the motherboard into a standard ATX sized case.

    That's individual, but I would go with 'wolf under a sheep's fur' build: would not cut a window in a side panel, but stick with that PSU, video and replace the ram with 32 gigs. CPU cooling - maybe that too, but a smaller one with fan sitting on the other side, just to keep the case intact.

    • @WiltshireTutorials
      @WiltshireTutorials  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The motherboard maxes out at 16GB of RAM. So, 32GB is not possible. I'd suggest using the same cooler I have here or the cooler I put on it in my newer videos. The stock cooler is trash in comparison.

    • @HAPKAH
      @HAPKAH 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@WiltshireTutorials Hey thanks for replying! By "stick with that PSU, video" I've meant that I would choose the same components that you have in the video. Cooler, yes, stock model will tend to fry CPU in games. But that cooler required case modding I guess, so maybe I would have also considered mini-watercoolers - where pump is built into the radiator (which goes behind 120mm outblowing fan) and there are a couple of hoses that connect it to a low-profile water block that sits onto the CPU. Of course, those coolers are much less reliable and significantly more expensive compared to the model hat you have installed.

    • @WiltshireTutorials
      @WiltshireTutorials  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cooler didn't require that much case modding. You don't need the window cut-out or anything, you just need to remove the CPU cooler standoffs behind the motherboard to fit an aftermarket backplate. Liquid AIOs are tricky in this case. The fans max out at 90mm and you cannot fit 120mm fans in the case at all. The case is too small for that, unfortunately. I'm working on a liquid AIO video for OptiFlex, but progress has been slow.

    • @keithp968
      @keithp968 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great video and super craftsmanship. My only other thought to hide the cables and not impact the thermals, what if you changes your cut out shape? Maybe raise the lower border to the top of the psu to hide it and the cabling. Or leave the psu showing but have the metal raise vertically from the bottom, just in front of the psu and then cut to the right just under the bottom of the gpu, that would block the view of the cables. Great job, just some thoughts for others or your next mod. I’m subscribed and looking forward to more content. Lots of people can throw money at an all new build, you did a great job of updating and improving the form and function of the system!

      Glad you like the video Keith. Thanks for leaving some feedback on the video. It helps me figure out what I'm doing right and what I can improve on! Also, thanks for leaving some suggestions! Not a bad suggestion! Although, I'm in the stage of finalizing the design for the PSU shroud I'm going to make for the Optiplex. Lastly, thanks for subscribing. I appreciate it!

    Did you have to use some sort of 8 to 4 pin adapter for the cpu? I just noticed that I don't have any cables for the 4 pin.

    • @WiltshireTutorials
      @WiltshireTutorials  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Most PSUs come with a 4+4 8pin CPU power cable. Try separating one of your CPU power cables.

    i hope after this, that you eventually bought an angle grinder. one of the first things i bought for my pc building, and it is a GODSEND.

      I have one. But, I prefer to take my time with things. Less chance of things going wrong when you're patient.

    You never told us how you wired up the SFX power supply to the motherboard.

      I made an 8-pin to 24-pin cable. You can buy them on Amazon

    Suggestions:
    Get a decent grinder, must've taken forever cutting that hole with a dremel.
    Paint the inside of the case black.
    Cut out the back of the case around the psu so it can breathe properly and drill the proper holes for mounting it.

      I have a grinder. Couldn't find it while filming the video. I may have left it as my cottage. I'd rather shoot the video with a Dremel anyway. Most people will not want to touch a grinder, if they're inexperienced.

    did the power supply you put in connect to the motherboard or did you modd the cables you didnt show that part i have the optiplex 5040 same oem powersupply cant put in a better gpu cause not enough power

      I modded a cable that I had laying around. However, you can easily buy an adapter cable on Amazon.

    Very cool mod project! Such an improvement to the look of the ugly stock case. I've got an Optiplex 9020 on the way, which I had been planning on swapping into a better looking case. A friend told me however, that there's all sorts of proprietary Dell stuff that doesn't really allow case swapping, so that kind of put the brakes on that idea. But luckily, I've got a bunch of Lexan lying around my garage, all the tools in the world, and a steady hand, lol! Thanks for sharing this video dude!

      Glad you like the project, George! I just recently finished the project entirely with my most recent video. There are some proprietary connectors that you may run into. But, most of them can be bypassed by an adapter.

    Do you need a power adapter to go from a 24pin to a 8 pin or does the 8 pint on the power supply simply work with the mobo without any adapter?

    • @WiltshireTutorials
      @WiltshireTutorials  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You'll need an adapter. The 8-pin on your PSU is an 8-pin CPU EPS meant to power the CPU, not the motherboard.

    i have a hp dc5800 base unit running a q9550 with a soon to be gtx 1650 but the stock cpu cooler for the 775 is an issue as its close to the pci e lane what do i use cpu fan wise

    • @WiltshireTutorials
      @WiltshireTutorials  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      There is no such thing as a 'base' unit. Are you using a SFF or a Micro Tower? If it's a Micro Tower, there is plenty of room between the GPU and CPU

    i have a 7040 with no chip, do you think its worth it to buy a used i5 or i7 or quit while im ahead in terms of keeping cost down?

    • @WiltshireTutorials
      @WiltshireTutorials  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can definitely find a used i5 or i7 for some decent prices to get that PC up and running.

    Nice transformation.
    But: You absolutely should open up the hole for the PSU exhaust, so it doesn't cook to death.
    That's the only negative thing which appears to me.

      Thank you! Many have recommended that and I will be taking that suggestion seriously. I will be changing that for the next video. Don't worry!
