  • Hi my name is Ryan. This is the fourth episode of my video diary for my L5S1 360 spinal fusion that was done on December 2, 2014. I hope this diary will be able to help at least one person out there that is going through a similar situation. Thank you for watching :-)

Amir, thank you! I'm sorry for the delay in my response. I'm doing great. My leg and back pain went away the moment I woke up from surgery. I'm over a year post surgery and still feel this was the best decision for my issues. There are days where I do too much, such as cleaning the house from top to bottom, a lot of yard work, etc. and my back will be very sore. Nothing that some rest and an ice pack will not fix. Honestly I do not remember what normal was, so I do feel that I'm what normal is to me now. If you're expecting to feel 100% better after your procedure it's false expectations. Id say I feel 80% better and if I would do my core exercises, I'd feel 90% better. I wish you the best of luck on your journey to recovery.

I'm happy to hear/see you're doing better, watching your videos has given me the courage to go forward toward my surgery. I am scared, I kid you not; not knowing what the outcome will be during and after my surgery. The doctors say I have extensive work that has to be done on my spine. When you said, I believe it was your first video; about praying to God, you were absolutely right. I glad your surgery went well, and I hope it continues to do so. Your and others videos has helped me immensely, it let's one know, there not the only one on the planet that has issues with there spine. Ryan, I hope and pray that you continue to get better and have a full recovery; and a long healthy happy life, also in moderation; excitement. Take care. 👍

I'm looking for recent post and recovery info. Your post was very incouraging but, like most I'm finding they story just seems to end. God bless you and I hope all is well. 8/31/2015 I had PLIF S1 L5 decompression and fusion. One cage with pelvic graft, screws and rods to stabilize. I returned to work at five weeks and symptoms are getting worse. My injury was 7/9/2014 and waiting so long my Sugeon found the crushed debris had grown around the nerves and I was near four wheels. Eight hour surgery utilizing hammer with chisel to prevent more nerve damage, I'm stuck with nerve damage they say some may return given time. I'm searching for long term results 😀😓

Hi Ryan, my name is John. I'm 68. I was born with spondylolisthesis, and it has given me varying amounts of trouble my entire life -- sometimes very, very managable -- sometimes completely UNmanagable. I've been encuraged my whole life to have the fusion, and I've refused every step of the way -- out of sheer TERROR!!! (Nope. Not ashamed to admit that. Big baby). Well, now that I'm an old man the spondy is so bad that it impacts every single aspect of my life in a negative way and I'm trying to convince myself to go through with the surgery. But, aside from fear alone, I also cannot imagine a life without bad pain -- how that might achieved -- will it work on me -- will the surgery pain be worse than my day to day pain -- will I be sorry I did it, or sorry I waited so long. Anyway....at this point, I've not made up my mind. But I did want to say, that of all the videos I've watched looking for reassurance, yours have been the most helpful. I think it's your easy, gentle, but entirely candid approach to offering up your experiences and advice. I have an MRI today, and then a follow up next Thursday to make a decision about whether or not to do it. As I said, I was born with this, so this life time of pain is really part of who I am; I cannot imagine living without it. But I also fantasize about what it might be like to have a "normal" back for once. Anyway...I'm blathering. Thank you very much for your videos. I found them very helpful. Best of luck to you. I hope you're feeling great. Peace. -John L. Stanizzi -- CT,

Fusions (ACDF they are called) can cause more operations...
Read up on ASD Adjacent Segment Degeneration. Artificial discs (if you are a good candidate) should be considered as a superior alternate.
You may need to go to a big City to see a specialist who has done hundreds or thousands. Example Dr Deutch at Rush Chicago.
I flew to Barcelona Spine Center, paid cash, got the best and was up walking as a tourist walking 15 miles with ease days after the operation for the remaining ten days we stayed.
