Bob Uecker. Pretty decent fielding backstop. Backed up Tim McCarver for a Cardinals world championship. Grew up listening to him and as I write this May 14th 2021, still listening to him call a Brewers game against the Atlanta Braves. Legend...

Tim McCarver by the way, wrote a nice book "Baseball for Brain Surgeons and Other Fans". I really never watched baseball so Bob Uecker was introduced to me by the Beer commercial where Uecker says _"I must be in the front row."_ and that went viral long before people had ever hear of an "Internet". Uecker was great in "Major League" with Charlie Sheen and others.

He was asked by Johnny for his greatest thrill in baseball and he said it was the time he saw a fan fall out of the upper deck in Philadelphia. Then he described how difficult it was to hit .200 because the pitchers were so good they could hit your bat if you weren't quick. I laughed so hard I cried. His Hall of Fame speech had all the other players crying.

It was May 5, 1988. I was driving from my home in Maine to my home town in Iowa, and had time to make a right at Chicago, and up the west coast of Lake Michigan. I got to Milwaukee's County Stadium around 4 p.m. and purchased my box seat ticket, three rows up from the Brewers on-deck circle, but the gates didn't open for another two hours. I drove around the area around the ballpark but got back just in time to still be one of the only fans there so early.
Finally, I walked in the gate, bought a Brewers yearbook (Paul Molitor was on the cover), and a hot dog and headed for my seat.
I was just about the only one in the whole place except, I noticed, down around the area by the Brewers on deck circle there was a guy talking to one of the Texas Rangers, sitting in the stands. As I got closer I saw that the guy had a tape recorder in his hand and was talking to talking to Davy Lopes (it said 'LOPES' on the back of his jersey. I knew he was one of the coaches of Rangers, and was the former Los Angeles Dodgers second baseman (Ron Cey, Bill Russell, Lopes, Steve Garvey) back in the 70s.
Finally, I got a good look at the guy Lopes was talking to, and of course, you guessed it, it was Mr. Baseball, Bob Uecker! He was interviewing Lopes for his broadcast that evening.
I walked down and stood about 15 feet away, giving them their space until they were done. Finally, a few minutes later, they wrapped it up, and Ueuker looked up at me, kind of grumpily, like I'd walked in on him coming out of the shower.
I'd had a few minutes to think of how I would approach this situation. I wanted both of their autographs on my Brewers yearbook, but . . . how to ask?
So, I said to Uecker, "Hey Buddy, yer in my seat," leaving him the perfect opening to finish the Miller Lite commercial from the 70s, "I must be in the FRONT rooooowwwwe!"
Lopes laughed. Uecker, instead, says, "Sorry," and then walked away. Disappointment doesn't begin to describe my state. I'm pretty sure that I wasn't the first stranger he had disappointed after that commercial made him a household name. I'd guess he'd grown pretty tired of it by a decade or so later.
Still, though, I think he's one of the best baseball play-by-play announcers ever.
