How To: Remove and Reinstall Oven Door: Easy

  • Household appliances can be tremendously frustrating, particularly when trying to reinstall an oven door. This how-to tutorial will demonstrate how to remove the door after disengaging the hinge locks, and then how to reinstall the door. Before reaching for your hammer out of frustration, have a look. The oven model featured is a GE Profile. Many oven brands use similar door and door hinge construction. Always refer to the manual for the specific make and model of your oven. Never force the door. Only take on a task of this nature if fit to do so.

I'm 41 years old and sometimes think about the pre-internet world. Then I find myself staring at a heavy door on the floor, after treating my oven to a special deep clean, and trying to figure out how on earth to reattach it. Thank God for youtube and to you Andy for making such an easy to understand video!! (Mine is a Samsung model if that's of relevance to anyone looking this up in the future).
Better not to dwell on how I got to my forties before getting around to cleaning an oven properly...

I watched several videos before removing my oven door and disassebling it to clean the inside of the glass. It cleaned up beautifully and then....came time to reinstall it. After several attempts, I went back to look for help on TH-cam. I found your video and it was the only one that pointed out the notches that have to engage the hinge. I got installed on the next try. Thank you!

After looking at the minimal instructions from Samsung and a different TH-cam video and spending an hour restraining myself from throwing the oven door out of the house in frustration, I found your video. The difference was that you showed how the hinges on the door should look as they come out and go back in. One hinge had shifted (locked in the 'closed' position and I didn't know which was correct) in my first efforts to reinstall the door and that information, as well as the explanation about the notch fitting into the slot, worked the first time. Thanks!

I really appreciate you taking the time to go through each step and pointing out the crucial elements of each step. My oven door wouldn't shut on Thanksgiving this year (Thank goodness the meal was already cooked and I was pulling the last item out of the oven. After much frustration and yelling from my husband because he was also hangry!! We set the door aside and then searched for a video online because the Oven manual's instruction said to set the door in and then CLOSE the door which of course did not work even when we tried it multiple ways! Thanks for this - we’d been wrestling with this for two days! In our case, the hinge locks on the door pins were folded down, which prevented the pins from extending far enough to catch in the oven slots. Pulling firmly on the pins to extend them, then opening the locks to hold the extended pins in place, did the trick.

For all this is an excellent video! I do want to add one thing though! Before you go to slide the door in. Take a flashlight look into the oven slot. you will see a pin in the middle. You have to guide it under that pin. If you go above that pin the door wants to fall out and not lock. If you get one side and not the other you can crack the door.

OMG, My wife has been complaining for over a year that the top oven door didn't open flat. I argued that it was okay. Finally I actually measured the door angle compared to the lower oven door, she was right, 14 degrees top oven, 0 degrees bottom door. I missed the key pointed out in this video to make sure the bottom of the hinge arm's notch fits over the bottom edge of the oven hinge support. That was the issue when I removed the door a year ago. Both doors lie flat when open, happy me, happy wife.

Great Job Andy! My wife and I wrestled with this POS for an hour. The secret was the lower tab on the oven itself and the slot on the hinge bar. I've done this countless times by feel with no problems whatsoever, but, at the age of 66 and with the upper body strength of somebody who tried to do things with a Hobie 16 when I was not in good enough shape to fly the hull (Hey, it was 33 years ago), I now find that this is a two person operation. The instructions are invaluable because both people have to have exactly the same instructions in mind before the act can be choreographed. The instructions here are perfect. It is also helpful to pile three milk crates upon which to rest the oven; just kick them out of the way before opening the oven. Thanks for a great little video!
