Rex VS Californinan Rabbits Growth Rate - 3 weeks old

  • Here we take a Rex doe that has kits 12 hours before a californinan doe and compare the growth of the babies for the first three weeks of age. This is isolated to just two rabbits so additional Observation should be done. But this was a fun comparison that has me thinking about future observations to keep in mind.

    Very helpfull your experiment. I enjoy watching it. I just got some Californian Rabbits and I had some Hollanc Loops. Very very different, from the fur to the size and weight.

    Beautiful babies!! I also would have thought there would be more difference, I'm curious now and it would be cool to see a follow up at the 12 week point and compare weights!

      Ya I agree at some point the californinan babies will get bigger. I need to redo this experiment with three different Rex does and three different californinan does. While I am at it I need to include three new Zeland Doe’s as well.

    It might have been more useful if you weigh the rabbits and averaged their weights. Might the californians be heavier?

    Those are gorgeous! My friend has a mix; Californian/Rex. Do you know how big it's likely to get when fully grown? It's a male.

    At 10 days old my holland lop (tiny breed) and Silver fox (huge breed) babies are the same size.... you gotta wait until they're older to tell which breeds fill out faster.

    My rabbit , has had 6 kits 5 days ok , I keep checking on them I’m so afraid I’ll find some that have died , so far so good 🤞🤞mammy rabbit is doing a great job , but I’m afraid to take them out of the nest to check to make sure they are all getting fed , if I find some are not , and I feed them , will mammy rabbit reject them , they are family pets , have another rabbit she had 5 kits , and they all died by day 3 , so I’m overly cautious now .

    You will see a major difference as they approach butcher age. The californias will put on a lot of weight and muscle and the rex will slow way down. I have both but my californias are excellent meat stock so lines do matter. The rex are beautiful rabbits but we are closing ours out as I do not have the patience to wait on their growth. We raise rabbits basically for meat only.

      Where are you getting this information? People do this all the time. Mother rabbits raise other rabbits babies all the time.

    • @caramelbilquees

      @@janawild4582 Do they is that possible??? I heard different smells cause the mother to kill all the babies

  • @justanotherchannelfornow2846
    @justanotherchannelfornow2846 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    You've made a mistake... you should never be putting the babies from one mother into another mother's nest, it will smell like the other babies and she could reject her own babies and kill them all. They are beautiful, but from a long experience, NEVER PUT BABIES TOGETHER, THE MOM KNOWS THE DIFFERENCE and could kill the babies of the other mom or both sets if she can't pick up her own baby's scents depending on how much exposure. You had me until you put them together in the same nesting box.
    On the difference, the difference is after they get on maintenance and meat rations, the Californian will grow faster and yield more meat in the same time than the rex, however the rex value outweighs the Californian in the pelt values if you sell the pelts. You get more meat with the Californian, but less value or no value in the pelt where with the rex, the meat is less but the pelt is more. If someone were to do a full study and factor in feed and the rest like 4H and FFA projects do, they would realize the difference. Rex and Californian do come pretty close to each other in overall value due to the pelt on the Rex, but only if you can find a market for them or do them yourself. If for meat alone, the Californian will always outweight the Rex and most of the time produces more bunnies.

      I can agree with much of what you said here but one thing I strongly disagree with is the concept that putting babies from one mother into another Doe’s nest is wrong. If you have “long experience”my guess is that you have been acting upon this idea that putting babies from one mom into another mom’s nest is harmful, and have not tried it much. (Maybe one time with bad out come, then never again)
      With over ten years of experience I have fostered many of babies from one nest to another for a verity of reason and have found mother accept without hesitation a kit give to them from another rabbit.

      @brookecantrellkreiser5934 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Meh. I disagree. While I know it CAN happen, I've fostered many babies in with another litter and the mother took to them instantly. In rabbit colonies it's not uncommon for mothers to kindle all in the same hole and take turns nursing the babies.

    Something about this research that stinks. You killing bunnies to stuff in your gut? Vile and discusting.
