That’s a true statement. Growing up in the 1970s, my friends and I were always joking with and pranking each other. To strangers we were polite at best or ignored them at worst.
When you hear Rickles "Out of Character" - he says things like - "we need to laugh at ourselves" - I believe that Rickles REALLY loved everyone and used this type of humor to actually teach an important lesson - we ALL need to "get over" ourselves and stop being all hypersensitive about everything - just laugh and enjoy life and lets ENJOY Each other - LOTS better than hate and hurt!
If you haven't seen any videos that he is in, try "Foster Brooks roasts Don Rickles." He also has another good one called "Foster Brooks roasts Sammy Davis Jr."
I grew up watching those roasts as a kid with my dad. They are some of the funniest and star-studded events. All great entertainers true legends. The Mohammed Ali rost is great.
Don Rickles was always a favorite. Watch the movie, 'Kelly's Heroes' sometime and try to figure out who could have played the character "Crapgame" better than Don Rickles.
You can't be offended because he makes fun of EVERYONE, white, black any other nationality, men and women, pretty much anyone who is near him. He's the master of insults, but loves everyone, and he respects everyone and they respect him.
The one thing about these celebrity roasts with Dean Martin from back in the late 70's-80's is bcuz they were clean roasted people with very little swearing in the shows
You need to hear the Nipsey Russell joke from this roast; he says it like this: "One day i saw Don driving a boat, pulling Sammy Davis Jr. on water skis. I yelled at him 'Great job Don, trying to entertain your little black friend! You're personifying brotherhood!' Don yelled back 'I'm baiting alligators' "
That's right! I forgot about that. The man was super talented. I loved his quick draw stuff and the tribute they did for him back before he passed when he put on a pair of tap shoes and still outdanced Gregory Hines. Beautiful moment.
Today's cancel culture is horrible.. back then.. they did have respect for each other but could still make JOKES about the differences in our cultures. In today's culture.. we can't say anything. and that's sad.. we are all different enjoy our differences. and be allowed to make jokes sometimes.. not trying to be hurtful.. we need thicker skins these days.
Back when it was okay to laugh at yourself! It was so much easier to have a conversation back then and if you said something that was wrong or really bad you'd get called out on it!!! It would be interesting and even fun if you could teleport somebody back in time who was really ridiculously far-left liberal who likes to say that words are violence which is total BS!! People just didn't get offended because as the saying used to be "sticks and stones may break my bones but words can never harm me"!! They can only harm you if you're weak and were never told NO!! Safe spaces...... what's that?? When I was little and cried because someone said something to me my dad just looked at me and said "grow up"! I did!!!
Milton Berle is a Hypocrite at these roasts. You see him laughing his head off when rickles throws out the black jokes but when rickles jokes about Milton's age he gets upset sometimes he gets up and starts walking towards him angrily and thats not an act
Yes, it is an act for Berle. I saw him talk about it back in 1979 on the Mike Douglas Show talking about how he was playing into the joke. Everyone there knew exactly what a roast was because they were all original members of the Friars Club. You had to be there to understand some of these things. The 1970’s entertainment was in many ways much more intelligent humor than today. Today, it is virtually non existent. Which is such a shame.
Milton was not upset or angrily you didn't watch the whole clip, in those days they weren't sensitive like today, that is the problem today's people snowflakes can't take a joke
'The day they do not make fun of you is the day they do NOT care about you.' - Sammy Davis

I remember watching these roast when they were new. Fall out of your chair funny.

Both are gold. “This beloved superstar, Sandy Duncan, Jr.”
I grew up watching those roasts as a kid with my dad. They are some of the funniest and star-studded events. All great entertainers true legends. The Mohammed Ali rost is great.
You should watch the video where Foster Brooks roasts Don Rickles... that's comedy gold
Don Rickles was always a favorite. Watch the movie, 'Kelly's Heroes' sometime and try to figure out who could have played the character "Crapgame" better than Don Rickles.
You should watch some of the full epusodes of the Dean Martin Celebrity Roasts. They were hilarious. Even serious dramatic actors got in on the phone.
You can't be offended because he makes fun of EVERYONE, white, black any other nationality, men and women, pretty much anyone who is near him. He's the master of insults, but loves everyone, and he respects everyone and they respect him.
First time I heard that last part by JR. Good review, thanks!!!

I grew up watching these … love them all & Don Rickles 💛

In case you didn't know but Sammy Davis Jr was Jewish.
No kidding?
@@jamesamelia2812 He dubbed himself “the only black, Puerto Rican, one-eyed, Jewish entertainer in the world.”

Don rickles on letterman with Denzel Washington. Lots of love, respect and funny as you no what.
Check out Foster Brooks on these roasts. The one where they are roasting Lucille Ball, is the best.
He came to roast and He raked everyone!
a day without sunlight is called night.
Interesting how these young creators are discovering these older comedians..
Bro, get Don Rickles with vice president Barry Goldwater with Ricardo Mauntelbom - the Mexican in the lettuce 🥬 patch, hilarious 😂😆😂
You should watch Forrest do Sammy from the same roast!
You should react to Foster Brooks roasting Don Rickles.
Over the Coals!
Don took no prisoner's.. he gave it to every race or religion..
Can you imagine him Roast Gabriel Iglesias?
I have a peg leg I laugh I feel you
Sammy Davis the best
Rickles is relentless! He came to insult!
we really need to bring these back !!! too much butthurt in the world today !
Stewie: that seems awfully racist.
Brian: No, no ... its not racist because Sammy is in on it.
Stewie: ... but, he's still carrying the bags ...

as you can tell the racial climate in America was much ,more relaxed back then, and not taken so seriously.

It is no question it’s an act, you clearly don’t know who don is 😂🫠Milton would’ve been 🧀 before he could ever lay a finger on the king 😉

Love your channel, but get to it stat. Tree minutes of stupid banter prior to the vid. C'mon guy. Step it up!
