This was 7/2/1977. On 10/20/1977 the band’s plane ran out of fuel and crashed in Mississippi. Ronnie Van Zant (singer), Steve Gaines (guitarist on far left of stage w maroon pants) and Cassie Gaines (backup singer and Steve’s sister) did not survive the crash. Dean Kilpatrick (manager), Walter McCreary (pilot) and William John Gray also died in the crash. It was a terrible, terrible thing (obviously)to happen. RIP
The day before the crash they were in Greenville S.C. And it was my 9th birthday… the day before Garry passed I had a stroke… I feel close to them .. I remember hearing it on the news .. that sucks..
I love you Dude , I just discovered your channel on utube . I love it that you are so young and have not experienced some of the best music and lyrics of your and my lifetime. With you I can experience it again and enjoy it with you and other. Just a little advice ,. , stop apologizing for what you don’t know. Just be thankful for the info…People are pleased to share their knowledge. ✌️😀
I wasn't yet 16 yrs old when plane crash happened. Being born later in 1961. I'd moved to Tennessee from Ohio end of May '77. But couldn't get to a concert farther away.
Of course I remember this band, but I also remember my husband was a huge fan of Rossington Collins band, but I don’t know which is which on stage. Any help please? Thanks 😊
I'm 73 and the difference in the way we looked back then and young people today is glaring. You didn't see the obesity, the overuse of makeup, plastic surgery, etc. we weren't prettier, just more natural.
I'm 40 and I can say pretty much the same thing. It's crazy how fast things have changed in the last 20 years. I would give almost anything to go back and live through the late 60s and 70s as a teenager/young adult.
Gen X here. We had the best music and cars. We thought it was going to last forever. I'm happy to see the younger generation appreciate our music. The band has a past worth researching.
One of the best southern rock bands of all time Don’t allow people to tear you down because of your knowledge of music, you’re here now and that’s all that matters❤ lol we didn’t have sunscreen back then
That coach hated long hair on guys and they just kinda dissed him with the spelling of his name! I think it was an awesome reminder that HEAR WE ARE, right back in the coach's face! Love it!! 😊
I was born in 1964 the Last Year of the Baby Boomers. I am 60 years old and I am glad I grew up in the 60's and 70's and 80's in a Golden Era of Music. Artists would cross Genres and Write Music for each other and perform together. It was all about the Music. People were so much happier back then. This song is the most requested song at concerts or when local bands play. Someone will shout Freebird, and the Band will usually laugh. Sometimes a Band will surprise the crowd and start playing Freebird. Please react to Lynyrd Skynyrd song Sweet Home Alabama. Please react to the live version from 1977 from Oakland Coliseum..
Next Lynyrd Skynyrd I suggest you give Hey listen is "Gimme Three Steps". It will give you a laugh and you will definitely relate to the gentlemen's particular situation. ❤️
We were Sun blistered red is lobsters, ganja filled with some mushroom kickers leading me to be the cool, great grandma, but doesn’t smell and who every grandchild want to have them next to them at R bonfire on the Alaskan beaches. I have a great feeling your life will be long and wonderful prosperity. It’s not made of things it’s what you take with you when your bones go to dust.
Skynyrd was on of the GOATS. My dad went to school in Jacksonville with the VanZant brothers right before they formed the band. I got to see them in concert late 80s with Ronnie's brother Johnny on vocals, nothing like the original band but was still a hell of a show.
I saw them in the early 70's before "the crash!" I have also visited their memorial in Magnolia, Mississippi. It's beautiful and the first words you see are, "If I leave here tomorrow, will you still remember me?" I'm almost excited for you getting to learn all these new/old talents for the first time! Being a Baby Boomer, I've grown up with it all. Still love to see young people enjoy what we enjoyed way back when! This song is almost prophetic! Those fans got their money's worth!!!!!
Back in the day beer cans were made out of steel and you needed a can opener to open it you couldn't crush one on your forehead without getting stitches. 😂
The significance of Skynard is that they literally created a brand new sub genre of music - Southern Rock which became a huge powerhouse!! Shortly after this performance the band's plane crashed and three members were killed - including the lead singer who was also their primary song writer.
Thank you kindly for reacting to Lynyrd Skynyrd. Them good ole boys from Jacksonville, Florida. Their library of music is can't miss. We ate out of our gardens, our moms canned for winter, got our meat at the local butcher, we spent our days outside till dark, played hide and seek before we went home.. we were super healthy The Vietnam War had killed thousands of our young men, including those who were drafted at age 18. Peace, Love and Rock n Roll was our mission..
I saw them in 75' & 76' at Capitol Centre, them same venue that hosted those great Eagles & Tull videos we've seen! Skynyrd would play all their hits then leave the stage, the crowd would go nuts until they came back and played a 20 minute version of "Freebird". Great times... 😋
That guy on the front row, high AF and went for a wander. He found himself in the front row for this show, looked around during this solo and realised he had no idea where his friends and girlfriend were. Legend has it, he never found them and started a new life in San Francisco, reading poetry for free weed.
The slide guitar bird chirps were a nod to the late Duane Allman who influenced them heavily. Duane played it at the end of the Layla coda. Ultimately, they dedicated Free Bird to Duane.
Best time to be alive… summer concerts, some 3 days long in outdoor stadiums, psychedelics, cannabis, new incredible music gifted to us consistently, love, freedom, did I mention freedom. ….we felt so free after our experiences of the turmoil of the 60s! ❤❤❤ oh to be young and naive again, to imagine hearing this music for the first time. 🎉🎉
You're close when you say you thought Lynyrd Skynyrd was one person. He kind of was. At school they had a coach by the name of Leanord Skinner. He would kick their asses and tell them to get their hair cut on a daily basis. They changed a few letters and named their band after him
People say he knew he wasn't going to be around long and this song is about it. I don't know if it's true but the band was in a plane crash and he passed along with a couple other members. Legends.
It’s so sad too because Ronnie had just gotten his life together. Had him a wife and a new daughter and didn’t get to live to enjoy any of his new life 😢
The girls were their to see Peter Frampton (headliner that day). As stated about the plane crash, 3 members, road manager, and 2 pilots died. 20 others survived but had serious injuries. This was their last song of the day. Always closed with it. The name was partially inspired by a P.E. instructor at the boys' high school who was known for his strict policy forbidding long hair on boys. Mr Leonard Skinner passed away 2910. He is buried near the boys from Lynyrd Skynyrd.
My favorite rock band ever they took over that stage I hope you're playing the one in the UK... As you start playing you're playing the one at the Colosseum you have to listen to the one in the UK they're good here but they're great on stage they were opening for the rolling Stones please play that version you're going to be blown away!!!!!! If you look hard there's cocaine on that white piano
Yes, this was used in Forest Gump. As soon as you said it, I remembered. It was the exact scene that you thought it was in. Your memory is impressive! I enjoy your reactions, especially on classics like this one. Thanks
One of the epic classic Dam I was 14 my old man was 19! . Dam here we are it was peace and love. 48 yrs later still rocking. We were so flipping lucky. As Momma music be the food of love play on ! Cheers
The studio version of Freebird was indeed in Forrest Gump. As was Sweet home Alabama . The beer can on Billy's piano was a real 70's Budweiser can. They were like soup cans. Made of steel not aluminium !
Yes! This was played during the Jenny is high AF and nearly fell off the balcony scene.Allen collins( in white) wrote this tune when he was 17! I love it that you're expanding your musical horizons.keep bringing that fire
Gimme back my bullets, Curtis Lowe, Simple Man etc, etc, etc I saw somewhere that the Rolling Stones were the greatest rock band of all time but most anyone that grew up in the 70's and 80,s south of the Mason Dixon line would beg to differ, they were Amazing, lots of other great southern rock bands to dive into also
Good reaction my young friend! Rock from the 60s, 70s, and 80s was the best music ever recorded. I think you'll enjoy most anything from Kansas, Pink Floyd, Rush, Scorpions, Led Zeppelin, AC DC, ZZ Top, Def Leppard, Eagles, Pat Benatar, and more Skynyrd, just to name a few. No digital enhancements or auto-tune back then. Just pure talent and analog instruments.
There is so much out there for you to see. The diversity of sound and musicianship of the bands was incredible in the classic rock era. Enjoy the trip.
Rest in Peace ... Lynyrd Skynyrd Band, we have not forgotten we still HEAR YOU 🎸.. YES it was used in Forrest Gump ONE today can pull the CROWDS line bands pulled in the 1970s!!!!! No pushing, shoving, fighting no dead people... it was the days of LOVE & PEACE. I was 18 in 1977...
A good time was had by all. I was 33, living in Northern Indiana, and rockin’ round the clock. My favorite band, Dr Hook, was small enough that they toured the Midwest so I managed to witness their live performances 3 times. Most of their hits were great ballads, but I like some of their other songs like “You make my pants want to get up and dance” live on TH-cam. I especially like their early raunchy songs, “Sloppy Seconds”. Sexy Eyes” for the ballad.
I was one of fortunate ones there that day. Back in the 70s, there was a series of concerts at Oakland coliseum called Day on the Green. This was from a Day on the Green, the Oulaws opened, Santana was next, then Skynyrd. Freebird was the last song and the WHOLE PLACE was jumping and clapping, off the chart energy!!!🔥🔥 Thats how we rocked in the 70s 🎵 🎸 🥁
This song is so very awesome. Unfortunately, shortly after this concert They had a plane crash and some of them died including the lead singer. Now they have all passed. RIP. This venue The Oakland Coliseum is where the Oakland A's Baseball team and The Oakland Raiders Football team played. I lived in Oakland back then, but did not have the chance to see this concert. I did get to see The Rolling Stones there once. I live in Iowa now. This is a classic. Love your reaction!
I was 16, almost 17, and we were happier. We didn't wear a ton of makeup, and just went mostly natural look. It was the best time for music and love. Thank you for sharing!
Nice reaction. Allen Collins is one of the GOATS. He wrote this at 17 and I ask who was playing guitar like this in the late 60's early 70's. Jimi, Duane, Clapton, Page........ There was just a few. Allen would never get his due. imo
It was sun and fresh air. We lived our lives outdoors for the most part. There was no such thing as internet or social media at the time, certainly not in common everyday usage. Everyone was healthier for the most part!
57,000 pack the stadium that day . Classic southern rock with the two lead guitars. A group of us didn't want to wait for them too come too Arizona. So we traveled 9 hrs too Anaheim. Ted Nugent and REO Speedwagon was there also. You can see our group....somewhere Lol Yes we were happier and healthier than youth is today. And as a Rancher in my 70s I can out work most 20 year olds today. Keep in mind most of us are great-grandparents day 🚜🤠🐂

Well, this is in Oakland CA. I'm sure if the footage was from Mobile Alabama there'd be some rough ones! lol
I'm 40 and I can say pretty much the same thing. It's crazy how fast things have changed in the last 20 years. I would give almost anything to go back and live through the late 60s and 70s as a teenager/young adult.
70’s rocked! No cell phones. No computers. All you could do was buy the record and wait for the band to go on tour. Many concerts were huge events!
Tragic… I was only 15..cousins in Ocala FL friends with the band …. Hurts to today for the families🌴🙏🙏🇺🇸
No girls covered in horrible tattoos...
Everybody was definitely prettier, healthier and happier. It’s not just you Cliff.
This performance is the definition of American Rock N Roll.
Gen X here. We had the best music and cars. We thought it was going to last forever. I'm happy to see the younger generation appreciate our music. The band has a past worth researching.
Younger Boomers, too. I was 18 when this came out.
Same!!!! Gen X . This song is so iconic to my childhood
This song was released in 1973. I am a boomer. I was 13. Think about it.
This is not gen X, baby boomers era
We were in our early twenties, end of baby boomers
Yes, Cliff, this was in Forrest Gump when Jenny was thinking about jumping.
No cell phones. Totally into the music and scene.
One of the best southern rock bands of all time
Don’t allow people to tear you down because of your knowledge of music, you’re here now and that’s all that matters❤
lol we didn’t have sunscreen back then
There was suntan lotion but most of us just didn't wear it, at least I know I didnt
Well, we did, because I remember using it, but a lot of people didn't bother. I bet that blonde was very, very sorry later.
Gainesville 🎉😊
we had coppertone lol
@ it was suntan lotion though not sunscreen
Yes, Forrest Gump and about another 200 films lol
😊 “ Lynyrd Skynyrd “ was the name of their football coach who said that they would never make any of them selves 😊😊
Leonard Skinner...
That coach hated long hair on guys and they just kinda dissed him with the spelling of his name! I think it was an awesome reminder that HEAR WE ARE, right back in the coach's face! Love it!! 😊
@@judyturner3850 I believe he later enjoyed the fame, and even announced them at a concert...
You need to watch Queen Live Aid. 20 min performance. You’ve never seen such control of a crowd.
Dude, I'm from Jacksonville Florida.
These guys were the real deal. No digital back up. One takes.
Yes Forrest Gump.
You will like their song " Simple Man"
If you were a 70’s teen you know someone who in later years had Freebird playing at their funeral. ❤

SOUTHERN ROCK 🇯🇪🤘 FV🎸🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🇯🇪
We spent little time indoors in the 70s.
Gary Rossington, Allen Collins, & Steve Gains... All playing lead guitar off of each other.
FYI, the group was named after the members' phys. ed. teacher Leonard Skinner.
Awesome song. Check out Simple Man and Tuesday's Gone.
Lots of great songs
We did get raised in a wonderful world of musicians. I was 22 years old when these legends were at their height of fame.
It’s amazing how the end with crazy guitars still follows the feel of the music. It’s not just noise.
Next Lynyrd Skynyrd I suggest you give Hey listen is "Gimme Three Steps". It will give you a laugh and you will definitely relate to the gentlemen's particular situation. ❤️
Welcome to the 70s
Exactly
There is some music that will never be forgotten You are listening to one of the greatest ever written
Famous chorus. Sampled many times. Song was in so many movies.
Truely one of the greatest live jams ever!!!!!
Cliff, no lie. I was there for this exact concert with my girlfriend. The best time I ever had in my life yes, I’m old and body, but still 19.
@@mamaalaska that’s a memory that has to be so special to you. Thats so cool

Before the internet broke the world.
You should react to the Pulse concert and David Gilmour's guitar solo. Pure mastery.
Lynyrd Skynyrd "Freebird" Classic early progressive rock ballad... Same as Lead Zeppelin's "Stairway To Heaven" both played over and over again...
Back in the day beer cans were made out of steel and you needed a can opener to open it you couldn't crush one on your forehead without getting stitches. 😂
Hey, Kiddos, that's your grandparents out there!!
The only proper response to watching this performance is, "Grandma! Is that you?".

Their library of music is can't miss.

"Simple Man"
"Gimme Three Steps"
"Sweet Home Alabama"

Was at this awesome show......old guy here....lol
How crazy would it be if you saw yourself in the vid? 😂 so cool 👏🏻
@Avalee325 there is another reactor to this song. One of the comments claims to be the sunburned girl he commented about.
That guy on the front row, high AF and went for a wander.
Born in 1971. Great times to be alive.
Born in 68, and it sure was. 😊
Born in 58, and yes, those were the days 😊

Got this one tattooed on my chest when it first came out 😊👍👍
The sun back then was warm. It didn't feel like you were being irradiated. And yes, everyone was fit back then. We are marshmallows now!

Great song , amazing talent. Gone too soon. Love the reaction.. one more thing, those concerts were 20 dollars to witness the best
All those hot ladies in the audience are in their late 60's/early 70's now. But rock your ass off, great grandma!

The studio version used to be one of my favorite cruising songs, get out on some backroads and hammer down as the song crescendos at the end.
