Cold hearted orc, that rules the night. Removes the colors from our sight. Red is grey and yellow white, But we decide which is right… And which is an illusion. Did I remember it correctly?
@@romarobbins270 Yes, but you are missing the beginning. "Breathe deep the gathering gloom, watch lights fade from every room. Bedsitter people look back and lament, another days useless energy spent. Impassioned lovers wrestle as one. Lonely man cries for love and as none. New mother picks up and suckles her son. Senior citizens wish they were young"
This was the final song of the album "Days of Future Past" which was one of the first true concept albums. Each song represented a different time of day with "Nights in White Satin" being the final song. I would recommend listening to the entire album, which had a second single released in the song "Tuesday Afternoon".
The correct title of the album is "Day of Future PASSED" not "Past" I have the album that I bought back in 1967 when I was a 20 year old college student. Many people confuse "Passed" with "Past" on the title
THIS is the foundation of rock music in my generation. Musicians were trained artists and teachers...they knew what they were doing in music composition, actually played an instrument or two...or three. Still sends a thrill through me.
Me too, I am 77 now. Was 13 in 1960 and 22 in 1969, I feel so lucky that I was those ages during the '60s with all that phenomenal music that filled that decade.
I'll agree with some others. Please listen to a studio version that includes the poem "late lament" before you decide which version goes on the play list. The song seems incomplete without it.
The Moodies were one of the first prog rock groups, that is after Justin Hayward joined them in 1966; they had a big hit with Denny Laine in 1964 with Go Now, which was more of bluesy song. They weren't really well received with Hayward, early on in the US, but when I was in US Air Force in Japan in 1969 they were huge and finally caught on here in the early Seventies when Days Of Future Passed (Nights in White Satin album) was re-released. I think you'll find they're quite a rabbit hole with numerous other quality songs, such as Wildest Dreams and I Know You're Out There, and have maintained a significant following mostly with their original fans now for over a half century.
Four of the players (bass, lead, drummer and flutist)in this concert were original members.....the amount of great music made by The Moody Blues is enormous. "Question" and "Ride My See Saw"(with the psychedelic opening) is a great place to start.
I was listening to Moody Blues as well as The Beatles, Joni Mitchell, Elton John, the Stones, James Taylor, The Kinks, Rod Stewart, The Animals, The Zombies, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, The Doors and on and on, when I was EIGHTEEN! It was an incredible time for my generation. There was no end to the creativity and substance of the music that was available for us in the late sixties.❤
“ Just what you want to be, you will be in the end.” This song is 60 years old.Having seen them in concert here in Atlanta twice and do this song with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra was life changing! You have a lot of heart and respect and will go far on this channel if you hang in there with it.
Moody Blues along with Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin were my late husband's and my favorite groups to experience is a better word than to listen to. I'm 79 now and can still feel the vibration of the speakers that we had along with our group of friends in our living room and our van that we used to party in! Just kick back with friends with black lights and posters along with incense and whatever you used to get in the mood and just experience the sounds! This takes me back! I'm the only one left out of our group but they are still here with me in my mind and heart! Good music, good friends, good times!
This song is from the LP "Days of Future Past", which is a compelling title in its own right. I don't think there is a bad cut on that LP. You need to listen to it in order, it's a journey. Also take a listen to "Question" and "I'm just a singer in a rock and roll band". Actually there are so many to recommend. Justin Hayward is an excellent song writer and singer. It's a mix of rock, spirituality, and deep reflection on the part of Hayward imo. Their music will change you in some way. Check it out.
A tour de force performance of this beautiful song. This was the finale fo their album "Days of Future Past" which had an orchestra on the songs. They are considered one of the founders of prog rock.
I saw them lolive in the 89s and when it came to the chorus EVERYONE sang along with him and i had full body goosebumps. Justin Hayward just has a gorgeous voice.
You have been touched by the magic that is the Moody Blue's. I believe this was their 25th anniversary tour. You should definitely try listening to their song, Tuesday Afternoon.
Procol Harum in a live concert in Denmark is similar - progressive rock band with choir and orchestra and a killer pianist/vocalist. If you liked this...just sayin'
A true classic of my generation! I never tire of this masterpiece. Keep in mind that this performance is decades after the studio version was cut. Please react to the studio version as it has a very lovely poem at the end! Playlist worthy for sure 😊
I was young when this came out. I wasn't enjoying popular music of the time, I listened to my older brother's R&B more. I was over at a friend's house, his family were staunch Catholics, so, imagine my surprise when he pops THIS record on the turntable! What? Lyrics that make you think? A full orchestra? Justin Hayward's voice? The more I heard, the deeper the music got. I mean, popular music is singing about yellow submarines and polka-dot bikinis, and the Moody Blues gives us, "Cold hearted orb that rules the night / Removes the colours from our sight / Red is grey and yellow - white / But we decide which is right / And which is an illusion ... 🤯
I grew up in the 70's hearing them. This is a hauntingly beautiful song. Someone mentioned the poem at the end that isnt on this version...its amazing! This is one of the bands that went out of the box when they wrote this song, wouldnt be the same without the orchestra.
The Moody's - one of the few groups who have earned a semi-permanent discography browser window. Every Moody album is its own venture; great to have running in the background whether hanging out or busy wrenching away on something.
Saw them in concert about 50 years ago. Even though we were in the nosebleeds, it was sublime. Friends who used to partake, considered the Moody Blues music to get stoned to.
I remember playing this song at the loudest I could as an 18 year old college freshman, and every girl in the dorm did the same. At 70 now this song hits harder and makes me tear up for my lost love from another lifetime, so it seems. Love, even unrequited love, goes on and on and on. Maybe I will meet him again in Heaven one day. Our loves in this life give meaning to our times.
Justin (the singer) wrote this when he was 19, after a girlfriend gave him a gift of white satin sheets... and it was one of the few singles I bought as a teenager. Even after all these years, it remains my 2nd all-time favourite song, after Bohemian Rhapsody.
I am 72 years old and had this on 8 track. We grew up with the best music but were to stoned or drunk to truly appreciate it. Happy to see the younger generation appreciate mow
This could be put on repeat for an entire day and never be tired of it, each time you hear it you will discover something new that you missed in the past playing. It’s heartwarming and magical at once. Congratulations on listening to this with your heart and not your ears.
This live performance was beautiful, but I highly recommend you listen to the studio recording from Days of Future Passed; this version leaves out an amazing spoken word poetry section from the album.
I have always loved the Moody Blues. Seeing them live in concert was a treat, some of the notes in their music would absolutely vibrate your insides. RIP Ray Thomas, his flute playing was great, but I liked his singing voice even more than that of the usual lead Justin Hayward.
I was a kid when this came out, and the album "Days of Future Passed" had a segue into a poem which has been called "Late Lament". Another song from that album "Tuesday Afternoon" I strongly suggest you hear next.
@08:58 Join the club! That goes for ALOT of us. This entire concert was pure gold and magic. This song is nearly 60 years old; they were ahead of their time - blending radio rock with symphony before prog-rock was a thing.
On the studio version of this, there is a poetic reading during the orchestral outro and for some reason, they didn't include it in this live performance. If you ever get a chance, listen to the studio recording and you'll get to hear the poetic interlude....
There is a man, a musician, named Doc Watson. Doc sang this song with his grandson, Richard, after Doc told a story about this song, his son Merle, and himself. You need to hear it. Doc was an 81-year-old blind man from Deep Gap, North Carolina when he made that recording. He was blind from birth but made a great living playing his guitars (and several other instruments). When I heard Doc sing Nights I realized that Justin Hayward had written a folk song.
I believe this was recorded in 2000 at Royal Albert Hall. At the beginning you asked what they were yelling - it was "Justin" - the lead singer and writer's name. Absolutely amazing music from my childhood. Their harmonies on "love you" are gorgeous.
You asked what they were screaming, they were screaming Justin, the lead singer's name. This concert was happened somewhere in either late 80's or early 90's, the song came out around 1967 and they did an excellent job.
My all time favorite band growing up. I am blessed to have seen them live 5 times. You are cheating yourself if you don't listen to the whole album in one sitting... "Breath deep the gathering gloom, watch lights fade from empty rooms. Bedsitter people look back in lament...
From their album Days of Future Past which I have listened to countless times. Saw them live in the Bay Area in the early 70s. Will never forget. They are my heros...one of a kind group.
Moody Blues are one of my dad's favorite bands, grew up listening to them. I lean more hip hop and punk, I'll literally never turn off a moody blues song though, they're amazingly underrated. If you like this check out Tuesday afternoon.
You really should listen to the original recording of this song. It's a beautiful song that will give you goose bumps & bring a tear to your eyes. The do use the orchestra everytime they perform this song! I grew up listening to this music & I feel blessed to have those memories!
The .oody Blues are a great band this was our song that we danced for our wedding day and every Sunday morning we listened to them why I made breakfast for .y family we love them
Gen- Xer here and this song is haunting. I got to see the Moodys at Jones Beach theater in NY... incredible. The album Days Of Future Passed is a must listen in its complete form.
and the actual SEQUEL to "In Your Wildest Dreams" .... "I KNOW YOU"RE OUT THERE SOMEWHERE" Great VIDEOS to them, they tell a 2 part story. "I Know You're Out There Somewhere" video picks up where the video for "In Your Wildest Dreams" ends. Not too many "sequel" songs out there.
I love that you are doing the classics! The soundtrack of my life. As we old people say, we had the best music. A hauntingly beautiful song. Thanks for your great reactions! ☮️💙😎
The Moody Blues was my very first concert. It was also the best concert I've ever been too. The opening act was Grand Funk Railroad which is so different from TMB, so when they came on, they asked everyone to be quiet till the end of the concert. You could have heard a pin drop. It was amazing! I've never experienced anything like it since and that was 52 years ago!
I love The Moody Blues!! The crowd was shouting "Justin" to Justin Hayward the lead singer. I grew up in the 60's and my older brothers and sisters had their albums and so I was weaned on their tunes! I knew all the words to this song and used to sing it all the time but I thought that they were saying "knights in white satin" and I envisioned a bunch of English Knights running around in white satin and really didn't have a clue about the song except the "I love you" part! LOL... I love so many of their tunes but this song is definitely one of my all time fav songs! It's so cool to see the original video for this song.. they were all so much younger.. it's unbelievable how gifted and talented they were and I would have loved to see them live in concert. Thanks Cliff Beats!!!
Check out "Tuesday Afternoon", "The Story In Your Eyes", "Your Wildest Dreams", "I Know You're Out There Somewhere", "Question" or "I'm Just A Singer In A Rock And Roll Band".
Oh this was a song that everyone around in the sixties in the UK knew and loved. So glad that I had an older brother who introduced me to some really cool music - and even the original recording of this is really powerfull
"Nights in White Satin" is in the movie "DARK SHADOWS" with Johnny Depp. Alice Cooper does a couple of songs in it live. 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼 Today, Johnny Depp & Alice Cooper are in band "Hollywood Vampires" 😎😎😎😎👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼❤❤❤❤
You need to listen to the studio version. There is a haunting poem at the end.
💯 the poem is awesome!
Agreed.
As beautiful as the song itself is, the poem is what really elevated it to the legendary status it has.
I have the poem memorized
Cold hearted orc, that rules the night.
Removes the colors from our sight.
Red is grey and yellow white,
But we decide which is right…
And which is an illusion.

Yes! Live version in Copenhagen, Denmark. Pure Gold!

They sound just the same as they did back in the day! Always loved me some Moody Blues!
Me too!
I loved this song since I was a teenager. I am 60ish.
Same, but a bit older.
Moody Blues were very popular in it's day. Studio version is a masterpiece.
Tes, with the poem: Late Lament.
This is the kind of music we had in the 60s.
I'm 70, and I'm so blessed to have grown up being able to listen to this catalog of music as well as all of the music from the early 60s on.
75+ AND music like this NEVER gets old. We might get old, but not the music. Thankfully it will live on for future generations.
Me too, I am 77 now. Was 13 in 1960 and 22 in 1969, I feel so lucky that I was those ages during the '60s with all that phenomenal music that filled that decade.

I am so glad you loved this ❤
So agree. The best music
"Breathe deep, in the gathering gloom. Watch lights fade from every room." Oh it's not truly over. You need to hear the full version.
Can't go wrong with the amazing Moodies. True pioneers of Symphonic and Prog Rock.
I'll agree with some others. Please listen to a studio version that includes the poem "late lament" before you decide which version goes on the play list. The song seems incomplete without it.
He can have BOTH on the playlist. I do, I listen to both versions a lot.

In a dimly lit room. and no distractions. Preferably headphones. I remember liking the cool floor under me as I would become engulfed with music.
I saw them in concert in the 70's. They were incredible. This song is so beautiful. I never get tired of listening to it.✌️🌻🌻

The singer wrote this when he was 19 years old. Break up song. Genius!
born in UK in 74 i don really think how lucky I was. Mum and Dad took me to Queen, ELO and Moody Blues. Felt like that it was part of the norm.
