a day in my life- school counselor edition || distance learning + managing negativity

  • As I share a day in my life, I think it would be remiss of me to not address the current state of the Black Lives Matter Movement.
    As we are continually seeking to understand and learn how to unravel our privilege and understanding how to better advocates for the Black community, one important strategy I have been working on with my students and myself, is to recognize negative self-talk and how to manage it. In addressing the scary things happening in our world right now, it is important to not only engage in conversations with our kids, but also provide strategies and techniques to supplement their learning.
    In a time that is incredibly stressful and confusing, it is important to remember to breathe and say something kind to yourself. I think that we are in a time period where major historical changes are going to happen, but it won’t happen without disruption. As I continue to educate myself on the issues, keeping in mind how to manage negative self-talk was really important for me. I hope it is for you as well.
    Be kind and thanks for watching,
    Judy

    Hi Judy! Thank you for your content and videos on life as a school counselor, especially during quarantine! I'm pursuing a degree in psychology and planning on graduating this fall! I'm also hoping to pursue a master's degree in school counseling! Watching your videos really get me excited for something that I'm very interested in! I can tell by your positive and uplifting personality that you're a great counselor and not only do you take care of your students, but also yourself. That is something that I have to focus and work on! I try to remind myself that before I can help others, I must practice what I preach/believe. It was inspiring to me when you say to practice gratitude and journaling about what you're proud of yourself. I catch myself getting into negative self talk a lot, so hopefully, I'll be able to take your advice and do that as well! Thank you for your content! Take care (:

      @@Musihoodie You need a college degree in order to apply for school counseling graduate programs. I majored in Community Development at UC Davis and the classes I took provided me with the friends and work experiences that shaped me to become the school counselor I am today! Without those experiences, I don't think I would have developed the knowledge or passion for school counseling :)

    Hi there!! Thanks for making this video! I'm going into my final semester of my master's degree in school counseling and relate to all of this. I finished my first internship in May and felt so disappointed and frustrated because I was't proud of the work I did at the end of my internship especially with not being able to meet with students, have class lessons, etc. as much or in the same way, and it made me discouraged for the fall with my last internship (the county I'm in has eluded to continuing distance learning in the fall). However, your video reiterated the importance of giving myself grace and knowing it's okay to not be perfect during this time (or in general) and to try to be positive going into my last semester/internship. I'm excited to start my new placement, meet students, and see what experiences I'll have which will ultimately help me grow as a counselor. Again, thank you so so so much! Just from this video, I can tell you're an amazing school counselor and your students are so lucky to have you. Hope you're having a great day! (:

    I'm very anxious about my life after graduation. I'm seriously considering getting a Masters in Counselling.
    My mother was a teacher and I grew up thinking I want to either pursue a career in teaching or any related field in education.
    Last year I met a counselor to work on some issues. She literally inspired me!! Like really that session made me look up towards counselors and therapist. Mad respect.
    I'm currently an undergrad student of Sociology and Anthropology btw, so I guess I can enter the Master's program with adequate understanding of anything relating to Human.

    I’ve always thought about School Counseling till I found out I have to teach for 3 years first... Which I’m not a fan of. But it’s always been in the back of my mind. Now I’ve been thinking about School Psyc or Social Work, but I’m still thinking about School Counseling too. How would I even go about teaching or getting a teaching certificate. If I apply to the program anyway, would I get help from advisors/professors to do that?

    • @heyjudywai

      A teaching credential/cert would be helpful to have but not necessary to apply for school counseling graduate programs! You will learn classroom management in some courses and through your fieldwork hours. You mostly teach SEL lessons in elementary and middle..not necessarily high schools. Hope this makes sense!

And, from which school did you graduate as a school counselor? Thank you for your time and what you do for the kids ❤❤❤🙏

    • @heyjudywai
      @heyjudywai  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you! What do you mean by subject specific knowledge? Like if someone is struggling with math? I support their socio-emotional needs. So if a student is struggling with math, I would support with teaching them executive functioning skills, study habits, and how to manage strong feelings (worry, anger, etc). I wouldn’t teach the math lessons since we have other support staff to help. Hope that example helps clarify things!
      I graduated from USD in 2017 :)

I have the bachelor degree of management , the master degree of education, and the psychological counseling credential in China, but my English ability is far from good. I' m interested in Combined Credential and Master's Program, Master of Education in Postsecondary Administration and Student Affairs , or some major relating to Education in the university in US , because I like the environment of school, helping people, etc. Would you mind give me some advice? Thanks for sharing.

      Aww!! Thanks so much for watching!! Wow it seems like you have an extensive range of work experiences! That’s great! I would recommend looking into specific programs in the US and what their requirements/recommendations would be for international students. It seems like you have really great work experiences. I’m not sure how your English would be an impact while applying but schools, specifically counseling programs, like to see passion and dedication expressed in the application. If you could write about how your experiences abroad impacted your dedication to the career and get it proofread by someone to help you edit, that could work! If you show drive and evidence of how you’re willing to continue learning English and growing yourself in the career, I’m sure schools would be appreciative of that! Hope this helps!

    Hi! Great video! I’m set to start my masters in school counseling in August. Do you think now is a good time with covid? Will school counselors be in demand or are they subject a lot to budget cuts? I want to be able to find a job right out of school. :) I’m in Indiana for reference. Thank you!

    • @heyjudywai
      @heyjudywai  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hey! Thanks for watching!! I think more districts are recognizing the importance of school counselors. I recommend looking on edjoin.org to see what positions are out there and what schools are hiring! Budget cuts are always going to be the scariest thing, but I do think more administrators are advocating to keep counselors. For example, my school district just hired 5 more full time elementary counselors in the Bay Area, despite having one of the biggest budget cuts we’ve ever seen. They cut other programs, but counselors were kept! It depends on each respective district but I think overall, there is a positive movement towards recognizing the importance of school counselors and how they play an important role in managing safe school climates (esp in COVID). Hope this helps!!

      @@athaliaallen622 elementary schools are so much fun to work in! I felt as if I could be truly preventative and proactive in putting systems in place to support the current and future success of a student. I can truly enjoy providing individual, group, and whole class counseling. I felt as if I could educate, enhance, and support my student with life skills that they may otherwise never receive. I also get to play with my students and run really fun events :) High school counseling has extra job descriptions such as writing letters of rec for hundreds of students and highly focuses on college and career readiness. I've spoken to some high school counselors and their main reservation with high school counseling is that you don't oftentimes get to provide 20-30 min counseling supports. Most student interactions in high schools are brief (5min) and you have multiple students coming in and out of the door. High school has great supports and you'd most likely work with other high school counselors. I think if I were a HS counselor, I'd really miss pushing into the classroom and working alongside all staff to support their students. I would also miss the culture of an elementary school! Hope this answers your question! Let me know if you have more! :)

    Quick question: Did you do your masters in school counseling or school psychology?
    Can you please explain the difference as briefly as you can?
    Thank you so much!

      School psychs spend a lot of their time testing students and supporting students with IEPs. They are often placed at different school sites throughout the week so they bounce between schools. VS counselors spend time on counseling lessons, groups, and individual sessions. I don’t test students for special Ed!

    are you ever worried about giving the wrong advice to a student? I feel like this is one of the big things that is preventing me from wanting to become a school counselor.

    • @heyjudywai
      @heyjudywai  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hahaha imposter syndrome is real. I worry about not using my time effectively with my students and not communicating with them in the right ways...however, I’ve learned that my job isn’t to give “advice.” My job is to counsel, to guide, to empower my students with the life skills needed to succeed in their early years. Some positive self talk I tell myself when I start doubting my efficacy is that I’m genuine and I’m supporting them in ways that are genuinely coming from a good place. You also team up with family and staff to support the student so when you’re starting to doubt yourself, know that you are not alone!!

    I'm thinking of enrolling for school counseling. I graduate from undergrad in April and plan to go straight into grad school. How do you feel about the job outlook, longterm?

    • @heyjudywai
      @heyjudywai  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think counseling jobs are on the up and up. More schools are recognizing the importance of counselors and the critical role they play in a school system. I recommend looking on edjoin.org to look up jobs in the state and location you’d like to work for! More schools are hiring now as there is a greater need for mental health support. For example, despite being in a pandemic, my district last year hired 4 more counselors and placed full time counselors at all their schools!

    • @heyjudywai
      @heyjudywai  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi!! I have a BS in community and regional development (really similar to sociology and human development), and a MA in counseling. Not all programs will require a psychology major so if you have a different major, that’s ok! You don’t need any other credentials to apply for grad school. I recommend looking into programs you’d potentially like to apply for and reviewing their program requirements :)

    • @heyjudywai

      Which test are you referring to? The only test I needed to take was the CBEST for my certification (and GRE but it’s honestly not required). The CBEST is long but spend time studying for it, and I’m sure you’ll do great! Look up practice tests to get an idea of what that test is like! Let me know if you’re asking about a different test haha :)

      @@heyjudywai so there is no test specific for school counselors and are u located in california?

    • @heyjudywai
      @heyjudywai  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You will need to take the CBEST as a part of your school counseling degree certification. Some programs will require you to take the GRE but not all programs require that! Some counseling programs will also require an exam at the end of your program but I did a year long action research project in lieu of the exam! Each program is different and has different requirements. I recommend looking up and comparing programs and schools! :) hope this helps!!

    • @heyjudywai
      @heyjudywai  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Most people may come from a psych background but that’s ok!! My major was in community development (similar to sociology and I only took one psych course). Other people I know have come from vet backgrounds or business! A psych degree or a major that is similar to human development would be helpful in providing course knowledge and *maybe* related work experiences, but it’s not necessary! You’ll learn the skills and theories in grad school :) you’ll also get internship and fieldwork experience in your grad program!

    Questions, I am planning on changing my career to school counselor but I also have to make sure my pay wage is good because I have to support my family. I don't know if this rude to ask but if you know, could you tell me how much do school counselors make per hour or annually?
    I did some research but each of them is different so I just want to make sure...

      Hi! Salary ranges are dependent on district and city/location. I recommend going on edjoin.org and looking up jobs available per district/county for school counseling to get a better idea of how school counselors are paid in the city/district you’d like to work for! TIP FOR ANYONE USING THEIR OWN PHONE # FOR WORK: I work at a nonprofit and often have to give my own personal phone number away now that we're all working from home. I found out google numbers that are randomly generated and you can share that with folks for free or using Google Hangouts to call folks and have ppl be able to call you back without ever knowing your own phone number. Hope this helps!

    • @heyjudywai
      @heyjudywai  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for sharing your insights!! Google numbers and hangouts are definitely great resources to use. Unfortunately, my school district does not allow it, so I’ve used *67 (star 67) and that has been a good way to keep my number anonymous if I’m calling from my direct cell phone number. If your company/school allows it, I definitely recommend it too! Thanks for sharing your tip!! :)
