I'm about to be in 11th grade, Alabama. I've always wanted to be an English teacher, and an author on the side. Last year I got really interested in psychology and considered therapy. This video helped me realize I can stay on my path as an English teacher and help people realize their passions and help their skills through writing.

Watching from Phoenix. Former teacher working on the journey to becoming a counselor. Decided to stick with my professional counseling program and gain experience from the mental health side (most likely school-based therapy) and then if I am missing and eager to get back in the school setting and less about the therapy, then I can always become a school counselor. So, I really appreciated what you said about your experience and the skills gained from your time as a mental health professional. Thank you so much for taking the time to create these videos and sharing your knowledge. You are inspiring!

This was really informative. You have a wonderful personality and so funny with the intro, especially the students asking to change their schedule, they do do that. I’m a high school teacher now and I got a position as a school counselor, but to be frank I am worried I won’t make a difference as a counselor like I do as a teacher.
As a teacher I get to know the students so much more. I also, have had students come in high to school with red eyes and all and have made them focus on school work and come sober and solve problems in their personal lives too. I just worry that as a counselor I’ll be pushing paperwork instead of actually engaging with the students.
    Do you make a difference?
Maybe I can continue teaching in the summer to help out and be a counselor during the year.
There are options and I’m grateful, but I just want to make a difference.

Hi, I’m actually thinking about going to school. I’m 26 and I’ve always had a passion for working with kids. My sister was a guidance counselor at my school. But I was fighting with myself on what to major in. I was going to go to a community college and just do psychology and transfer to get my bachelor’s but they say with a bachelor’s degree in psychology it’s hard to find jobs. My main goal is to be a school counselor for sure. So I know I’m going to get my masters but I’m trying to figure out how to juggle school and finding a good paying job with bachelor’s degree for that time being. Never really been interested in teaching just always been more in the counseling part.

Hello! I'm watching from Houston, TX and I am currently a tutor who is thinking about becoming a school counselor in the future. I liked how you clarified that school counselors don't exactly provide therapy but rather short-term counseling sessions to help students. I was wondering if a student had problems with anxiety or depression and needed help long-term, would you refer them to a clinical mental health counselor?
