Although it's a hated and critiqued car, the ones post 2000 are good, i own one and love it, luxurious comfortable, powerful enough, reliable, and rugged, add to that the beautiful bose sound system . People buy it for cheap, leave it to rust, issues and never fix it then they say it's bad 😒 It just needs care like any luxury car and for sure it won't disappoint. 👍
I used to be a service manager and saw several of these reach 300,000 miles (both the ML320 and ML430 versions), despite the reputations they had. Sure, the earlier years had some shocking build quality issues, but even the 1999 was noticeably better than the 1998, and the 2000 and later models were much better still, as you said. One of the last ones I dealt with belonged to a friend who simply stopped driving theirs at 325k miles in favor of a newer car.
Bought my 2001 ML320 new and love it. 141,000 miles and garaged which means no rust. Monitoring annual cost of maintenance which has been very reasonable, I think, even though it always goes back to the dealer. I have the same service advisor I started with 21 years ago. Now it is contest to see how long I can keep it going. Have a feeling it’ll outlast me. Just wish I got better mpg - 22 on interstate and 15 in town using premium.
I love the W163. My parents bought one brand new back in 1998 (black fully loaded with the optional fender flares). So many great memories growing up in that vehicle. I recently purchased a one owner California owned 1999 ML320 in brilliant silver and I love it! W163s are body on frame, so they are trucks just like the gelandewagon.
I forgot how good these looked in maroon and green. It’s a shame they had such poor build quality. Couldn’t they have painted the mirrors? It looks like they cut costs wherever they could in the early years before the 2001 midcycle refresh.
I love my ML430 and tractions from open diff that performs incredible in the snow. seeing all the panel gaps and rattles here and there that reminds me that this tank was assembled in the US and we just don't give a damn about built quality. great engineering but built poorly for sure, just like this ROVR channel. you couldn't find this video without fucked up audio? come on dude, smh.
I have a ml320 and ml55 both around 180k falling apart my 96 Toyota landcruiser with 500k miles still running strong their good trucks but they can't compete with Toyota or Lexus

Owned a 2003 W163 ML270 CDI for 8-9 years. Worst car Benz ever made. Engine suffers severe emission system issues, electrical issues, rust issues, general build is sub standard. Suspension is also under engineered for off road duty. General maintenance is also more expensive than most other cars. The 164 is by far the better car to own especially 2010 and later. Better still just settle for a japanese car and dont look back.

Mine is also terrible on fuel .. pulling trailers or empty it’s bad. But very reliable!
Awesome I've enjoyed our 2002 ML500 for 8 years now.
I'm STILL learning cool stuff about this incredibly built & designed tank of an SUV.
I have W 163 ! , this is very good car !!!

I feel like the W163 Mercedes Benz ML has many different Mercedes Benz designs in 1 SUV
Brilliant trucks, I have two !
