    The W163 is actually a very cheap and easy platform to lift. Watch the video to find out how easy.
    I ended up with 22" from all 4 hub centers to top of the wheel arches. 38" from ground to wheel arch.
    And 14" of total ground clearance all the way down the center with 35x12.50R17 Federal Couragias
    For ground clearance comparison:
    Jeep Rubicon - 10.8"
    G-Wagon - 9.5"
    4Runner TRD - 9.6"
    Military HMMWV - 16"
    Get a set of rear 1" spacer blocks here www.ebay.com/itm/153822478770
    The factory front shocks only have 3" of travel from 15" compressed to 18". We need to find a similar shock that has at least 19" full length. Then we will hit another limiting factor at the ball joints. Any more down travel than this and the ball joints will be maxed out. The answer to that is uniball control arms but I'm not ready to make a set of those yet. I had a set of UCAs from Camberg on my 4Runner that were great.

    I'm looking to get back into a W163, had one many years ago. Thinking of doing an overland build and your vid inspired me to keep looking and possible pulling the trigger. Great tutorial and info you included in your build. BTW, nice welding and custom bumper build. Thanks for posting!

    That is a number 3 Philips. Most importantly this is the information I been looking for to fit 35s without a body lift. You rock

    Dude, thank you! I'm going to try to raise the front end up a bit on mine soon, and this is exactly what I was trying to find out how to do... I'm looking forward to seeing your other ML videos

    IMPORTANT tip when reinstalling rear torsion bolts: Make SURE front wheels are TOTALLY off the ground! Any load will prevent the torsion bolts from reaching the nuts.

    Can i just screw the bolt all the way till its stop for lifting the ml ? Also at full rotation to the top how many inches it will lift the front ?
    Urgently and kindly i need the information of the front lifting using the bolt only..
    If i bolt it all the way to the top how many inches it will lift ? I also ordered back spacers 40 mm to lift the rear.
    Thank you

      Theyre not public yet were edditing them a little but its only some snow testing for now. Btw do you have ant torqie steer when you accelerate full throttle ? My friends ml has alot but mine doesnt but mine is almost stock height in the front only lifted in the back.

    • @InfidelGarage
      @InfidelGarage  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@kiskiller3 I only hammer on it off road. WOT launches would be hell on the trans with 35s and the 3.46 gears. The 320 and 500 have 3.70 gears. I actaully like the highgear ration as its better on the already bad MPG.

    • @kiskiller3
      @kiskiller3 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hammering it is the only thing we do.. i get around 12mpg average.. well. Let me know if you discover torque steer. I really want to lift the front of my ml but torque steer is something i dont want at all..

    • @kiskiller3
      @kiskiller3 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also. Dont worry about that transmission.. the 722.6 is nearly unbreakable. Its awesome. Only problems woth it is conductor plate and the seal that leaks in the connector.

  • @backinthehighlifeagain5468
    @backinthehighlifeagain5468 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I have almost identical setup to your ml.
    I would recommend fitting an LSD rear end if finances allow.
    It's made a massive difference on badly rutted out trails and deep mud.
    Not that I use it for super serious off road.
    Built more of a cross country expedition/camping vehicle.
    But its good to have the extra traction as a backup when I need it 👍

    • @davidmiller2973
      @davidmiller2973 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Backinthehighlife again What LSD unit did you use?

    • @backinthehighlifeagain5468
      @backinthehighlifeagain5468 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@davidmiller2973 5 series BMW. 3.46 ratio to suit Ml 270 diesel factory gearing.
      Custom made diff cradle brackets. Custom inner Cv's with machined drive flange adapters.
      Lsd set up pretty tight like a locker, but still streetable on paved roads.
      Al bolt in, no cutting or welding to the frame.

    • @crazyyakuza8741
      @crazyyakuza8741 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Backinthehighlife again so you used a e39 lsd ? As you mention you had to do a lot of custom parts to used that lsd?

    • @backinthehighlifeagain5468
      @backinthehighlifeagain5468 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@crazyyakuza8741 Yeah pretty sure its e39 diff.i had a friend supply the diff and fit it to the ML. Being an engineer he did all the welding and fabrication of the diff mounting brackets and machining of the drive flange adapters.
      The problem we had was the ML uses a tripodle inner cv, rather than a more conventional cage and race type cv.
      So we had to find a cv with the same size spline count and diameter as the axle, and at the same time fit the bolt pattern on the BMW drive flanges.
      We managed to find a cv that fitted the axle side but not the drive flange side.
      So that's why we had to use adapters to change the bolt pattern from cv to drive flange.
      You could probably find the right combination so you didn't have to use adapters. But I just didn't have the time or the patience to look through every shelf at every junk yard or parts store in the city.
      One thing worth mentioning, if your going to do a conversion like this yourself, is depending what width cv you use,just make sure you don't run out of axle spline as the suspension travels through it's full range of motion. Causing the cv's to bind up.
      Also you don't have to use the diff I fitted. I guess you could use any IRS LSD diff that is strong enough, has the correct ratio for your ML model and is not too complicated to fit.
      If you have any questions, just ask. 👍

      Backinthehighlife again
      clever engineering and thinking.
      How much extra lift do you think is possible before seriously compromising cv life?
      Also, what impact on wheel camber have you seen?
      I’m imagining camber moves in a positive direction.

    I wonder what the effects are if you index only by one. Do you still have to modify more stuff for the tires to stay straight. And just basically use the stock equipment. Or will it not fit anymore no the less.

    • @Ledfndr
      @Ledfndr 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm curious too and thinking of doing it this way, I have 20mm rear spacer, and putting the front all the way up, it's not quite level, having a rake to it, so I wanna try 1 spline since 2 requires more modification.

    Does lifting the front end cause camber change at the front end?
    I imagine it does but not having lifted an ML I don’t know from experience. I’m guessing it’ll move the camber in a positive direction.

    • @InfidelGarage
      @InfidelGarage  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes it will drastically increase negative camber. Its fixed by pulling the upper control all the way out and getting an alignment for the toe angle. I did mine myself. Same for the rear when you lift it.
      Also, since making that video, I've put in new 97 4Runner rear shocks up front. Rancho RS9000 which are adjustable and they're awesome
