Back in 1976, when "Rich Girl" was released. Us high schoolers had not heard a sound like that before. But everyone sure had to say, Rich (B*tch) Girl sometime during the day.
Folks from Philadelphia take making music SERIOUS.
Now, forty-seven years later... I am clearly aware of their vocal harmonizing. A signature of The Philadelphia Sound.
Hall and Oates are supremely gifted musicians.
My all-time favorite is "Cab Driver".
That's from the Live at the Troubadour,
live album by Hall and Oates DVD.

    ***HALL + OATES TRIVIA TIME!!*** ...It's a BITCH, Girl....still..... (2:49)
..this was H+O's 1st #1 tune in 1977; It actually is NOT about a Girl, but a trust-fund Baby GUY, that Daryl Hall knew, who was...ummm...living the "high" life....
    - ...It's a hybrid of what H+O would become to be known for, "Rock & Soul", and was One of the earliest examples of "Westcoast AOR Rock", that was popularized by them, Boz Scaggs, Paul Davis, Gino Vannelli, and, of COURSE, The Godfather, Michael McDonald....
    ...here's The Top 5, March 1977...:
    5. Don't Leave Me This Way - Thelma Houston
    4. Don't Give Up On Us - David Soul
    3. Dancing Queen - ABBA
    2. Evergreen (from, "A Star Is Born") - Barbra Streisand
    1. ***Rich Girl*** - Hall +Oates (1st week of 2 wks.)

The song is actually about an ex-boyfriend of someone they knew. So they were really singing about a "Rich Guy", but switched it up later.

Amen! This was their First Number One Hit, their other hits were "She's Gone", and "Sara Smile" who was not only Daryl's former Girlfriend but along with her Sister Jana Co Wrote alot of their Hits. Today at last report she is a Real Estate Agent. They also did alot of The Rock & Roll Shows in Europe, Top Of The Pops in The UK, then TopPop in The Netherlands, as well as The Old Grey Whistle Test which had a MTV Unplugged vibe to it. They would do The Midnight Special, American Bandstand and were one of the few White Acts to do Soul Train.

This song was thier first n.1 single. The duet achieved a short success in the middle 70's after thier breakthrought with ''Sara Smile'', but after this song, until the album ''Voices'', the duet struggled to make the impact of thier debut. When ''Voices'' album started to gained success after thier cover ''You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling'' make a great success in radios (Reaching n.12 in US), his biggest hit since ''Rich Girl'', this duet became more bigger then in 70's and the next single ''Kiss on My List'' was the single who it's started the huge success to the duet continued during all the rest of the 80's.

Production values stepped up in the seventies. High Fidelity! 1977. "Rich Girl" was their first number-one single. It got a lot of radio play. I remember it well. Wikipedia says people back then thought it was about Patty Hearst. Heh, I dunno 'bout that. The song is catchy and funky and soulful and so well produced its professionalism is just wow. Ironically funny given the bent towards wealth in the lyrics. Thing was that back then it was still commonplace for the really rich and the really poor to regularly interact socially. The vast wealth inequality in society today was still a dream in the conservative political mind. But I digress. There were plenty of rich girls around in 1977 to push the listener's ear in more generalized directions. A voice on the radio isn't singing a factually accurate tale so much as an emotionally truthful one that resonated with ordinary experiences.
