It looks like it's ready to be spackled on. shouldn't it be a thinner consistency to be used with fine brushes?

Yes, it seems thick, but it needs to be just the right consistency or it won't hold it's shape during firing in the kiln. It is more like draping it onto the surface than painting it on. The enamel is hanging off of the edge of the brush. Some artists will use a needle instead of a brush to apply it. If the enamel is too thin it spreads out and all of your work runs together. Thanks and have a great day.

Will this be food safe after firing or only for decor?

Hello, after kiln firing the pieces can be washed and used. They are not just for decoration.

@@LearnPorcelainPainting thank you for relying! Is there any specific food safe paint powder to use and the mixing oil you recommend? Thanks again

@@Sara-jg8od If you are simply painting the outside of cups and the outer areas of plates any china paint would be fine. This is also ok for occasionally used pieces where the food will be placed on the painted areas. For pieces that you want to use for every day that are painted in the areas where food will be placed, use lead free china paints. Also use lead free for any plate that a child would use. Hope this helps.

@@Sara-jg8od as far as mixing oils, I use my own that I mix and sell to my students. It is oil based but all natural. I will have it available in my online shop in a few days. The painting medium (no matter which one)completely burns off in the kiln by about 900 degrees F. Long before the paint has matured which is around 1400F. So the painting medium will not have an effect on the food safety of the piece.

@@LearnPorcelainPainting thank you so much, I just subscribed your channel! One last question, so for the paint I can use lead free paint. What about the oil that I should mix with it for a child use?
