Microsoft Authenticator is a great authentication tool that makes it easy to add and maintain accounts. However, moving your Microsoft Authenticator account from one phone to another can be scary, as you don't want to mess up and be without a way to access your most important accounts. Thankfully, Microsoft makes moving your Authenticator app to a new iPhone or Android phone relatively easy.
Now let's walk through what you'll need to do to move Microsoft Authenticator from your old phone to your new phone.
First, before you do anything else, you need to backup your Microsoft Authenticator account on your current device. This will give you the ability to restore it from that backup in an emergency.
Step 1. Launch the Microsoft Authenticator app on the iPhone or Android phone you want to move Microsoft Authenticator off of. You'll land on your Microsoft Authenticator home screen.
Step 2. Tap the "Menu" icon at the top of the screen. A menu is displayed.
Step 3. Tap "Settings" in the menu. The Settings screen is shown.
Step 4. Navigate to the Backup section, and then tap to toggle on the iCloud backup if you're on an iPhone, or the cloud backup if you're on an Android phone. A dialog box is displayed letting you know what email you'll need to use to recover Microsoft Authenticator. Make a note of this email account. I'll tap "Continue," but you can also choose to change the email account used to recover your Microsoft Authenticator backup. A dialog box is shown letting you know that your account credentials are backed up and what account they are backed up to. Tap "OK."
Next let's walk through the steps to move Microsoft Authenticator onto your new phone.
Step 1. Install the Microsoft Authenticator app on your new phone, and then launch it. Tap "Begin Recovery." The Microsoft Sign In screen is shown.
Step 2. Enter the Microsoft account your Authenticator backup is associated with. You'll be prompted to use Microsoft Authenticator on your old device to authenticate, but in the event you don't have that you can also tap "Use Your Password Instead" to log in with your account password. In this example I'll tap "Use Your Password Instead," enter the password associated with my Microsoft account, and then will tap "Sign In." A screen prompting you to verify your identity will likely appear.
Step 3. Choose from the list of available methods to verify your identify, and then perform the necessary actions to to do that. After verifying your identify you'll land on your Microsoft Authenticator home screen where you'll see a dialog box letting you know that your accounts were successfully recovered. Tap "OK" to see your accounts. Note that you'll need to log in to any other Microsoft accounts you had set up in Authenticator to use them.

Great. But the video (and the app) assumes I'm moving from iOS to iOS and from Android to Android, not from iOS to Android or vice-versa. And we still have no way to export accounts WITHOUT using the backup! How about just allowing to scan a QR code, like Google does? No need for your accounts to get to the cloud. You can keep them all in your Authenticator.
Ok, sorry, but to me, this is something someone should have already thought about and implement a solution for it. Cause it's not at all uncommon, and there's no way to get your accounts from iOS to Android.

That is the reason I abandoned microsoft authenticator and went with google authenticator instead. It is really frustrating not being able to transfer your codes form one OS to another different OS. I suggest anyone to go with google authenticator. More user friendly, and the passage from one device to another is just 1 click

How do you do this without having a microsoft account (or google, facebook, etc.). I had to use my personal email when installing it for my eployer's onboarding platform, and on my workphone I have a different Microsoft Authenticator account to sign on for work related things. But if I want to sign in to the onboarding platform, I have to use my personal account, which is on my personal phone. I want to transfer this to my work phone, but I can't do the cloud back-up, as the account is not linked to a Microsoft account.

That's a fair question. If you don't have your accounts backed up, then I don't know if it's possible to do this. Hello, I went from Android to Apple. I am 100% sure I had my backup on on my Android, nonetheless I don't see any on my iPhone, is this normal? I guess you'll say yes :). Oh I miss my codes :(.

I would assume yes. I'm sorry to hear. My advice for anyone is to try and load critical apps on a new device to ensure access and data. But I get that's not always possible. Who knows exactly what happened, but if you're not seeing those codes and you don't have that phone, then you're probably out of luck.

Disable 2 step on all accounts then add them with google. Never use this app again it’s bad.

It only recovered 2 accounts, of a total of 6. Why?

Only works for personal accs, if those 4 are linked to any ltd or organisation, it won't work as the IT fellas have to "unlink" your old phone first manually.

@@andyb9664 This app sucks. Google is way simpler in exporting accounts to as many devices as you want.

No not really right? Back up is located on your ios or android account. You should have acces to those details before you can get to your back up.

Now, at leat, it is asking for a second email , to which you are sent a password. So you should know 2 emails and 2 psws to be able to access it
