Great video, thank you. I tried to restore my Microsoft authenticator yesterday by using the restore from backup option on the new phone. It restored all my accounts except for all Outlook and Microsoft 365 accounts because it said that "additional authentication is required" and "action required" which means that I will have to login into 20 Microsoft 365 accounts to rescan the QR codes. That really defeats the purpose of recovery.
@@itwithcarlos This would mean to have multiple authentication methods to begin with such as txt, email, phone call just in case you are locked out of the authenticator app. If the old phone is available it is not much of a problem because the authenticator app will approve the requests on the new phone. Today I had to login into all my 365 accounts by adding authenticator app authentication method to add my new device.
Did anyone find a resolve for this problem? I'm having the same issue restoring a backup and all the accounts are showing "Action Required" I have about 50 accounts so recovering each one manually isn't an option.
Yeah, right... What Microsoft does NOT tell us, is that after we restore all accounts from the backup, they are f***ing useless as they need to be re-authenticated. Every restored account displays a message in red saying "Account requires attention" which means that one has to SIGN IN to that account, then go to the Account settings, add a MFA method and scan a QR code for that account again!!!!!! Like, what is the fucking point of this "backup"???? We had to MANUALLY recover 50+ accounts on our office phone after switching from one Android phone to another. Having the old phone up and running with the MS MFA app configured does not help - you still have to SIGN IN and then ADD MFA methods!!! And I am not even mentioning here that migrating the Micro$oft Authenticator data from an Android phone to an iPhone (and the other way around) is NOT POSSIBLE. At all. Full stop. Does not work. So, how come they call it "backup"??? It is not a backup. It is just another illusion that our data is protected... Damn, I wish I could use the Google Authenticator with all my Microsoft accounts. That app just works.
Yo Carlos I noticed some other folks that have attempted to transfer MS auth to their new device after signing in with “begin recovery”, they had a red label on some accounts that said “action required!” Do you need to verify these accounts using your old device? Or your accounts should already be good to go. And some require you to scan QR code provided by your account provider? Or Does that only apply for work accounts. Gonna purchase a new iPhone soon just wanna make sure, I don’t mess anything up , kinda nervous.
If there is not any problem with the backup, you only need to restore it and everything should be fine, however, I know the backup could have problems sometimes. In any case, if you still have the old phone, you can also configure the new phone by authorizing it from the old phone. Hope it helps. Thanks.
If can't access your account at this time, you may need to remove the app and install it again. It should give you the option to restore your backup. Thank you.
How can I restore all other accounts from my old phone for example Coinbase account and some other accounts I am using under Ms Authenticator in old phone
If your previous phone was an iPhone, then the Authenticator app should have required an iCloud account to store the backup. On your new iPhone, you can restore the backup from your old phone. If you previous phone was an Android, the back was probably made in a free MS account (like Hotmail or Outlook.com), however, it is not possible to restore the backup on a iPhone if the backup was made from an Android. There is not an easy transfer from Android to iPhone or vice versa. The only option is to manually configure the accounts again on the new phone :( Thank you.
Hi, If you have another administrator, you can try resetting MFA within the MS 365 admin center for the account in questions. Here is how to reset MFA in the admin center: th-cam.com/video/fnUyTwLfA8U/w-d-xo.html Hope it helps, thanks.
I was disappointed with the Microsoft authentication app. It failed to back up my 2FA codes, which I discovered after losing my phone. Additionally, when I activated account synchronization, it didn't sync between devices. It only synchronized with the Microsoft Edge browser.
We need to sign in a personal account in order to create a backup. Will the MS Authenticator request a verification on this personal account storing the backup data ?
If your backup account is configured to authenticate, then yes. You would need the verification for the personal account as well. In this case, it is not suggested to have it configured in the same device. Thank you.
Hi. Hoping someone can help with this. Where is the backup stored when you select the option on the Microsoft Authenticator app to backup to iCloud? When I search my iCloud I can’t see it anywhere? I want to validate a backup is actually saved. Many thanks.
Hello Preet, when you backup the authenticator, it should backup all the account that are configured within the Microsoft Authenticator app. You don't backup a specific account. In any case, I have only tested with Microsoft accounts, but Microsoft says that all the accounts should be backed up with this option. Hope it helps.
Im keeping the same same iphone but plan on changing my cell phone number, will getting a new number cause any issues with the MS auth app if im only changing to a new cell number?
I am unsure what will happen in that case. I have seen phones with no active lines that still receive the notification on the autneticator app. I have no way to test what you describe. Thank you.
After putting my microsoft account for backup its now telling me to verify my account using gmail. Which is the option says i have a code or i don't have any of these. I cant get through to this so no backup or i dont know where can i get the code.
I had to reset my phone now i don't have a backup and when i try to sign in aouthenticator then need the code and is a school email how can sign in again without the aouthenticator code
In this case, I suggest contacting the admin and ask for the MFA reset of your account. Here is a video that shows how to reset it from the admin panel in MS 365 th-cam.com/video/fnUyTwLfA8U/w-d-xo.html Thank you,
Hi Gregory, if you are the only admin, then you will need to contact MS support: support.microsoft.com/en-us/topic/contact-microsoft-office-support-fd6bb40e-75b7-6f43-d6f9-c13d10850e77 Thank you!
is there a way to transfer all the authenticator codes to a new phone with a new number I cannot transfer any info from my old phone to new phone I need to start with a new device and new number because I fear I may be being tracked via my device & id info by criminals from another country.
I would say that you can create the backup as shown in the video and then you can restore it in another device (with a different phone number). I haven't tried but I see not reason why it won't work. The backup is stored in a MS personal account (hotmail or outlook for example). Hope this helps. thanks
@@itwithcarlos I think when I get my new device I change the numbers first I know this works bc I did that not sure if I needed the app just email then 2 step code then I can remove the app authentication then put it back with new device that is totally decoupled from old phone which I think they has tracked it via towers using only my number and maybe imei id.
You will find the admin center icon as another app (admin icon) if you have the admin role assigned. Please know that the admin center is only for Microsoft 365 Business or Education subscription. Thank you.
I lost my device or moved on to a new device. I have backed up the Microsoft authenticator in the settings on my old phone. but cannot back up data in app to new phone. what should i do now?
If for any reason you are not able to restore the backup from your MS personal account, then you will need to contact your MS 365 admin and request the reset of the MFA for your account. If you are the only administrator, then you will need to contact MS support. Thank you.

Good one. But after restoring the backup from cloud to Android, It shows ACTION REQUIRED prompting me to scan the QR again.
There seems to be a problem with the backup. Where you able to restore it?
Doh, I logged in before restoring the back up and now there doesn't appear any other way to get the restore.

Hi Muhammad, when you create/setup the MS authenticator backup, all the accounts can be restored on a new phone. Thank you.
I have the same problem. When I restored, only the main Microsoft account restored and not the other ones. Im android to android.

We need to sign in a personal account in order to create a backup. Will the MS Authenticator request a verification on this personal account storing the backup data ?
If your backup account is configured to authenticate, then yes. You would need the verification for the personal account as well. In this case, it is not suggested to have it configured in the same device. Thank you.

As far as I know, it is not possible to create a local backup. The backup is only in the cloud (in a personal MS account)
