So much for meeting people in finance and going to investment clubs in first-year lol. I spent the entire year reading textbooks and on zoom calls. Hoping that there are more in-person events this year.
I know a lot of investment clubs that still did virtual meetings, but too bad if your school didn't. I would also argue it's probably easier to meet people over Zoom calls / phone calls now. Good luck!
We are already in a big crash Inflation is a catastrophe. This CPI report is a colossal failure. To bring the housing market to a halt, the FED will have to pull all the stops. The unfortunate issue is that other markets are being decimated. If you want to stay green, you have to rely on a lot of diversification. Currently up 14% and being careful. Still a better deal than leaving it in a savings or checking account yielding 0-1 percent interest.

Yeah business frats are generally helpful. Very school dependent though, I would just always check the stats to see if it's actually going to be beneficial to your career placement.
Really loving all these videos, some of the best content on TH-cam for learning about what careers in Finance are really like. I'm currently studying Medical Engineering here in Australia, and am looking at entering a Masters program in International Business and Finance because engineering jobs are weirdly enough not very well paid and overly stressful. I've heard having an undergrad in Engineering is highly desired in Finance circles because it helps in analytical and reasoning skills, is this true in your experience? I'm scoping out career options now and am at a bit of a crossroads
I wouldn't say highly desired, but an engineering degree is certainly not an impediment. It's probably the most common non business / economics degree. If you're coming from a different background, you have to have enough finance stuff on your resume so people know you're serious about the career.
Hey Matt, great content! I'm a Canadian studying in the US and I was wondering if you could make mention of which banks or firms are generally willing to sponsor Canadian citizens for TN Visas. Thanks!
Check h1bdata.info to see which firms sponsor for visas. In my experience though, Evercore is really, really phenomenal about visas. I think Goldman, JPM and CS are all pretty good but fluctuate year to year.
Can you provide a video guiding how a 4-5 years experienced professional in FPNA can make career in IB? What steps he can take and in how much time he can get his dream job?
Probably need to go get an MBA at this point if you're already 4-5 years out of school and haven't moved yet. Try networking and moving to a small firm to start, and if no progress after another year, I'd go back to school.
Great video, man. What do you personally think about careers in IB vs PE? I know a lot of people think of PE as the "promised land" and just use IB as a stepping stone, but do you think a long-term career in IB is comparable? Is one fundamentally better than the other? Thanks!
Long term I would personally prefer PE. IB is really brutal to sustain and the hours don't get that much older as you grow up. There are lots of different flavors of PE - you could go to a relatively chill firm if you didn't care about being at a mega. One is not "fundamentally better than the other" though. Different personalities will prefer different things.
can u drop the documents u had with the lingo pls!!!! i’m a freshman in college, and i had my first networking call yesterday and i knew very few words
is economics enough to get into investment banking ,and then what will be the process for that how long it take to get 1st job after graduation ,what are the resources for that, hopefully you would answer soon ,by the way are you on linkedin too?
Hi Matt! After freshman year, what would be the plan regarding internships? Which year would be recommended to search for ib internship? Thanks for the videos
Most IB internships will be for your junior year. The recruiting cycle for this depends where you are in the world. In North America, IB junior year internship recruiting happens a year earlier in your sophomore year.
Man, I’m going into my 7th semester of school and i’m lost. I want to be in IB. I play College Football and can technically do 2 more years of school. Can you give me any tips?
I’m 18 and currently operate my own trading company and go to a small community college with plans to pursue finance and IB. Where can I start to network?
Love your vids man. I went to a target school(New York University), and secured internships in my junior and senior years in college. When I graduated, i secured a full time position at a prestigious investment bank in New York. These days I am making over 185k in total annual compensation. You're vids helped me out a lot when i was in my sophomore year. Keep up the great work.
Will try to, it's a bit harder since it's more influenced by what bank you're a part of. Out of undergrad, Wharton and Harvard are the best. Out of MBA, Harvard, Stanford, Wharton are all solid.
I would probably pick Waterloo / Laurier double degree if that was an option. Otherwise, Schulich for sure. Laurier is better if you want to do mutual / long only fund type work and stay in Toronto. I think Schulich is overall better though in my opinion.
do you think i should try to reach out to search funds or PWM in toronto to see if i can get an unpaid internship during this summer between my HS graduation and going to uni. or is this unrealistic and i should just wait until i get to uni.
You can try... but you should make sure you're fully polished and professional before doing so. It's much worse if you make a bad impression (e.g. don't have technicals ready or come off as sloppy). I would focus on studying material and learning and then reach out when you start school.
That's unfortunate, but will happen to some people. By virtue of doing all that work, you'll probably be in good position to still land something reasonable though. Keep your spirits high and keep at it until the day you graduate.
Was joking a bit that the Peak Frameworks courses are more relevant. If you're really looking for a certificate, CFA Level 1 or one of the HBX / MIT courses could be OK. I recommend other things before courses though.
Yes, but e-mails are generally better and have a much higher response rate. LinkedIn messages get washed away as most professionals will get tons of invites.
Not screwed, but you probably have to crank up the intensity and be realistic with yourself. I'd target smaller firms and regional banks for summer and then try to squeeze in somewhere for full time.
There are more programs now that help underrepresented minorities and women. There are a lot of programs in both IB and PE that are designed to expose women to finance opportunities. There are a lot of cultural challenges of being a woman in finance, but I think if it's something you're interested in and work hard towards, you have a better chance now vs. ever before.
I’m not sure if you have heard of this school, but I go to TJHSST (Thomas Jefferson High School is Science and Technology). This school is ranked as one of the top schools in the U.S. Would you say this school improves my chances of getting into IB or even PE?
