Oh my god! THIS is what I've wanted for so long. I've always wanted to see language lessons presented with music and history! Thank you for this! I will be looking for more! I've studied Russian, German, and French in college, but no one ever thought to incorporate music into their classes. It never made sense to me. Folk songs, especially, make a wonderful bridge between language and culture and history. Brilliant!
Dig deeper lads. Gráinne Mhaol (Grace O'Malley) was added later. The original version called 'Ó ro! 'sé do bheatha a bhaile" is from around the time of the Jacobite Rebellions in Scotland and it was about Bonnie Prince Charlie (Séarlas Óg "Young Charles" in the original). The song was changed shortly after the Easter Uprising of 1916 adding Grace O'Malley as a recognizable Irish figure to give the the song a rallying tone for those opposed to the English. It's basically an Irish song supporting Bonnie Charlie's claim to the throne.. Here's the original lyrics: Chorus Óró, sé do bheatha ‘bhaile, Óró, sé do bheatha ‘bhaile, Óró, sé do bheatha ‘bhaile Anois ar theacht an tsamhraidh. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ A Shéarlais Óig, a mhic Rí Shéamais ‘Sé mo mhór-chreach do thriall as Éirinn Gan tuinnte bróig’ ort, stoca nó leinidh Ach do chascairt leis na Gallaibh. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Chorus ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ‘Sé mo léan géar nach bhfeicim Mur mbéinn beo ‘na dhiaidh ach seachtain Séarlas Óg is míle gaiscidheach Ag fógairt fáin ar Ghallaibh. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Chorus ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Tá Séarlas Óg ag triall thar sáile Béidh siad leisean, Franncaigh is Spáinnigh Óglaigh armtha leis mar gharda ‘S bainfidh siad rinnce as éiricigh!
There are dozens of examples of traditional or older folksongs being conscripted for other purposes and having their lyrics changed. That's the beauty of folk music. It's for the people and it can evolve to send a new message as the times change, no copyright or royalties required.
I’m currently learning Irish, beautiful language, similar to Scottish Gaelic (“Anois” for Irish, “A-nis” for Scottish Gaelic). This is probably my favourite song sung in Irish. Great work guys 👍
When I fist time came to that song, I was absolutely in love with it. Before watching your video I mastered the chorus myself. And now, thanks to you, I know 3 more lines from that masterpiece! ❤ I will not stop until I can sing the full piece in Irish. Thanks Gods I started to learn Irish, so much beautiful song there!😊
☘️ You are brilliant! Can you maybe, please learn the song, "Moch Sa Mhadainn", with English verses & Gaelic! Thanks in advance! Fiddler & Uilleannpiper from Germany Lovley Planxty's 🌈🎻☘️
See Bitesize Irish for complete Irish version + phonetic transcription and English translation. For the melody just insert the title of the song, there are several examples. I like Sinead O'Connor.
Now that is some weird language, especially as many letters kinda dissapear during pronunciation as in french:) I heard this song performed by Screaming Orphans and it is great song, but I think their version is only in Gaelic..Maybe one day I will pull of this one:)
Don't know how long ago this was posted. Don't know if you guys check old videos comments but why did you not do the whole song in Gaelic? You're not supposed to mix languages or at least it's what I was told
by the way your translation of the chorus is sadly incorrect. ORO mean "hey wake up;" It is an alarm. The other chorus lines are a call to return home to defend the homeland. The "welcome" crap is a pop version nicety. This song is a call to war and invokes Grace OMalle, the pirate heroine of Irish might. By the Grace lived during Quean Elizabeth's time, went to London and would not bow to HRH. This song is like Paul Revere sounding the alarm, "The British are coming." Oh Gosh Please do an all Gaelic version and don't mock our history.

Ní fíor sin ar chor ar bith! Is dócha gur fáilte abhaile do bhrídeach nua-phósta a bhí san amhrán i dtosach agus amhrán Seacaibíteach ina dhiaidh sin. B’é Pádraig Pearse a chuir Gráinne isteach ag tús an fichiú céad. That’s completely untrue. The song likely started out as a welcome home to a new bride and it was a Jacobite song after that. It was Pádraig Pearse who stuck Gráinne in at the beginning of the twentieth century.

Chorus
Óró, sé do bheatha ‘bhaile,
Óró, sé do bheatha ‘bhaile,
Óró, sé do bheatha ‘bhaile
Anois ar theacht an tsamhraidh.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A Shéarlais Óig, a mhic Rí Shéamais
‘Sé mo mhór-chreach do thriall as Éirinn
Gan tuinnte bróig’ ort, stoca nó leinidh
Ach do chascairt leis na Gallaibh.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Chorus
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
‘Sé mo léan géar nach bhfeicim
Mur mbéinn beo ‘na dhiaidh ach seachtain
Séarlas Óg is míle gaiscidheach
Ag fógairt fáin ar Ghallaibh.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Chorus
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Tá Séarlas Óg ag triall thar sáile
Béidh siad leisean, Franncaigh is Spáinnigh
Óglaigh armtha leis mar gharda
‘S bainfidh siad rinnce as éiricigh!
Didn’t Padraig Pearse change lyrics before the rebellion as it was sung during it and he was murdered right away after?
This version is better, because it's Pearse's version, a song about the Irish kicking the colonizers out
@@timotheboulder I think you may not have been listening to the lyrics. Or listening in school, more likely
Ive always loved the way irish always sounds like youre singing when you speak, but god help me, i can never figure out your spelling system.
Would love to see this written out phonetically.
BRAVO !
Thank you Simonida!
Could you guys post the piano intro as a whole song? It’s so beautiful
I teach English and my kids would love this video! However, could you do an all Gaelic version for my nerds and me? X
We have some all Gaelic content coming in the near future!
I was thinking of the same thing! I really want the all-Irish version!!!
See Bitesize Irish for complete Irish version + phonetic transcription and English translation. For the melody just insert the title of the song, there are several examples. I like Sinead O'Connor.
I am learning this song at school and in full Irish
Ní Anraí VIII a bhí ina rí i Sasana ag an am céanna le Gráinne mhaol. 'Sí Éilís a bhí í réim agus chas Gráinne léi i Londain.
I love how they didn’t translate Gallaibh 😂. Smart
Let's keep that bit a secret!
Ha, Ha, Ha
Great video guys. Means foreigner though. Important to be accurate, even though it might be unpalatable to some!
FOREIGNERS
That might send the wrong message to kids if they knew the meaning
why do you change to engklish in line 2 of the verses? i want learn to sing gaelic lyric. crazy hmmm
Was Grainne Mhaol the same person as Grace O'Malley?
Yes! 😊
Can you do the Irish anthem pls??
You should do one on the civil war version of this song.
My Irish song in Abalon
Fantastic! Now do the full Irish version, no English. Please!
very good! so funny
Brilliant
Mot me, a 36 year old man, singing along when im meant to 😂
Interesting! Michael looks like he could be Rory McIlroy’s brother.
will you do a totally gaelic version
I feel like if I try to pronounce this my tongue will fall off haha
Now that is some weird language, especially as many letters kinda dissapear during pronunciation as in french:) I heard this song performed by Screaming Orphans and it is great song, but I think their version is only in Gaelic..Maybe one day I will pull of this one:)
My iPad is not the best whit cargi 1:48
It is more urgent that I learn better Swedish (recently moved) but I have wanted to learn Irish Gaelic for a long while.
Sláinte!
this is wonderful
*me, stuttering over pronunciation, crying* I’m sorry, Nana!
❤
The british propsganda service hss sunk to this ..
I like how the subtitles dont match what my ears are hearing 😂
Why did you switch to English?
I think there were multiple versions, even in English.
What's up with the english lyrics?
I hope I never hear anybody sing this song in English again
Why is there English in it aswell and u got the verus mixed up
Wait a minute. Those aren't the right lyrics.
It went really well until you starting singing it in English.. I don't understand the point!!
Fail in pass Irish we won't tell ye why
Great vid guys. I was hoping for no English though. Like the Clancy Brothers version at Carnegie Hall.
