    Lights make a huge difference! Literally days after a flood light/camera was installed over my driveway, a person walked up my driveway at night, tried the handle on a car door, and got lit up by the flood light then ran.

    My uncle has 3 large dogs that he trained to bark(or smell don't know which) whenever they hear anybody within 200 yards of the property. Then, he and his 3 sons would go up to the second-floor windows with thier AR's to their "sniper nests". Their drills are so fun and cool to watch.

    In my old house that had a sliding glass door, they just threw a landscaping brick through it and went to work. If the doors are too tough, there are plenty of windows that open with a rock.
    Large dogs, cameras, and an alarm system hopefully make my present home more trouble then it is worth. Also lock up your guns when out of the house, so if you come home to a break in, they don't shoot you with your own gun.

    Awesome video John. So many people when you say “what do you have for home defense?” They reply “I have a shotgun!” Or “I have an ar15!” But they have no alarm system, no reinforcements on their doors, no cameras, might even have unlocked doors. People ignore the simple home security things because guns are cool and stronger locks aren’t. But I’d much rather have someone try to kick in my kick proof door, hurt his foot and give up, then have to shoot someone.

    I’ve had Arlo cameras inside and out for three years. They can be scheduled so that the inside cameras go on at night only. All cameras can come on via geofencing criteria when you’re away. My cameras are motion triggered and set off a chime I have in the master bedroom so when we’re dead asleep and don’t hear the iPhone notification we will here the loud chime noise. I use dog bark as chime for inside cameras at night which sets off the real fluffy Maltese dog alarm. These cameras can be hooked up to trigger floods (my next upgrade). We have a conventional monitored alarm but I love the additional capabilities of the Arlo to peak in on the house when we’re away. All camera footage is stored on cloud free for 7 days, but there are paid plan for longer storage.. Great video series!

    Larson makes a full-view security glass door with a three lock mechanism called Secure Elegance. No bars and kick and blunt force resistant security glass. Just one more option for people with a front door with glass, just add this security door. I've seen some videos showing people trying to gain access through the glass and it was a major pain in the ass. Sure, crowbar would probably work to pry the door open eventually, but these are the toughest glass security doors I've seen.
    Also, install a power kill switch on your garage door opener. When you get home, close the garage door and kill the power to the opener. You can install a regular wall switch to kill the power to the outlet the opener plugs into or you can go really cheap and easily install a corded remote switch... plugs into the outlet, plug the opener into the back of the switch, run cord to the wall and secure with double sided tape. Less than $10 and installs in a couple minutes.

    A cheap and easy fix for kick proofing your door is to replace the screws holding in the striking plate for the dead bolt with 2 1/2" or maybe 3" deck screws driving them all the way into the 2×4 behind it. Dont over tighten them. You'll warp the door casing. Might cost you 25 35 cents and maybe 10 minutes. May not be as strong as what John has, but they'll be kicking for so long that by the time they get in... they'll be staring at the business end of your gun.

    Good points of the door reinforcement, John. But here's a not so hypothetical. I am a peace officer, volunteer firefighter/emt. We were called to do a welfare check on a gentleman who was going through a divorce. After calling his job, we found he did not show up for work or call in that day. I have a Stanley fubar for breaching and a great reason I have it is so I can pop a door without having to replace a door, frame or window. Long story short, we hammered off the door knob and broke the door window because he had a 2x4 brace at the bottom of the door. This was very good security, but took a long time for us to gain entry to find he was suffering from carbon monoxide poisoning. Security is good, but what keeps the bad guys out, keeps the good guys out as well. Check out products like Knox box or if you have a neighbor that's home all the time (and trust them), give them a key to your residence.

But unfortunately later, at 9:49 this information is not blurred out, and is easily read. I worry about this couple's privacy because of this information being shared online. Just my opinion, that if the trouble was done to blur it out in the earlier part of the video, perhaps it wasn't intended to be revealed later. GREAT video content by the way! Thank you!

      I saw a TV investigative thing that tested people’s dogs. The little ones were better than bigger ones like labs. So some large dogs are good but not all. The important thing is their superior ability to detect an intruder. If you get the early warning then you can spring your home defense robot from its silo.

    Helpful hint: If you do have a security system use a sign from a competitor. If you let the bad guys know what system you really have you are advertising which one they need to hack. Specifically if you have cameras tied into the same system. They can then hack the feeds and get a live feed of who's home and where you are. The best defense is in the details.

    Also having a dog with a loud bark. Most burglars say they won’t rob those houses because it draws attention when they’re barking loudly, and they can serve as an additional early warning system.

    It practically makes me swoon to visit someone's home and see how vulnerable it is. IMO a well-secured home is even more important than having a gun in it...although having a gun and knowing how to use it is an excellent thing too.

    I've spent a lot of years in home security, CCTV, and access control. The first people a victim calls after the authorities is us. I can tell you from experience that preventing a break-in is far better than having evidence with cameras or an alarm. Those are certainly nice to have, but I've sold many 3M security film window treatments and DoorArmor(tm) systems to people after explaining that prevention and deterrence is better than a siren going off.
    Take care, and good work!

    Private residences as sometimes very difficult defensible positions definitely bugs me and the security scenarios play into how I look at houses now. I especially love your philosophy at the end of making sure to tackle each security aspect/component one at a time to completion rather than getting overwhelmed (and thus doing nothing) by trying to throw everything together at once on a budget.

    If you have doors that open inward (which you shouldn't) you can just drill some holes in a 4x4 and the floor so they will line up and drop in a couple nice landscaping spikes no one is kicking in your door (I grew up in the hood)

    • @kravjitssig7291
      @kravjitssig7291 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The problem I see with that, is that most doors that open outward have hinges on the outside, which means all you need is a Phillips head screwdriver and a hammer, or something to hit the screwdriver with, to take out the hinges and take the door off and get in. I guess a door with inside hinges that opens outward would be ideal, but that doesn't physically work very well. Just some food for thought.

      @@kravjitssig7291 From what I have dealt with in my life most door open inward with hinges on the inside of the door

    • @kravjitssig7291
      @kravjitssig7291 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, that is right, most doors open inward with hinges on the inside, which keeps an intruder from having access to the hinges. Maybe I didn't say it clearly before, but I was saying doors that open outward have hinges on the outside, which makes them easy to break in by removing the hinge pins and taking the door off.

    “And how we burned in the camps later, thinking: What would things have been like if every Security operative, when he went out at night to make an arrest, had been uncertain whether he would return alive and had to say good-bye to his family? Or if, during periods of mass arrests, as for example in Leningrad, when they arrested a quarter of the entire city, people had not simply sat there in their lairs, paling with terror at every bang of the downstairs door and at every step on the staircase, but had understood they had nothing left to lose and had boldly set up in the downstairs hall an ambush of half a dozen people with axes, hammers, pokers, or whatever else was at hand?... The Organs would very quickly have suffered a shortage of officers and transport and, notwithstanding all of Stalin's thirst, the cursed machine would have ground to a halt! If...if...We didn't love freedom enough. And even more - we had no awareness of the real situation.... We purely and simply deserved everything that happened afterward.” Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, The Gulag Archipelago, 1974

    Read Helter Skelter back in HS. First 92 pages scares you to death. I still assume the Manson family is coming up the driveway, every day. Or Ramirez. Every door and window is always locked and alarmed at night, and all day every day EDC is the norm, even inside. Backups abound. ASP viewers take precautionary measures most often. And this is pretty hard to watch, since these folks have volunteered to be the guinea pigs, but they'll be glad they did.
