What do you guys think of the Taito Egrett II Mini? I'm late to the party on this one!

Great review man! I picked up the Sega Astro City mini mainly for the Sega 60th anniversary I believe back in 2020. I also picked up the separate controller for a little bit more. It is pretty cool, even though it has been mostly sitting in the original box. lol

    PDubs,
Great review as always! Just so you know, your footage shows very clearly that the screen on this little unit is superb! The blacks are incredibly impressive. I know things tend to look different in person, but your footage demonstrates just how great this screen is. Wonderful job!
I would've loved to add this to my collection, but even at $199, the price is a bit too steep for me, given the fact iiRcade has me covered with so many great Taito hits. Like you, I bought the Sega Astro Mini, and my reason was for Golden Axe II Revenge of Death Adder. Unlike my many emulation options, the Astro Mini is the only unit I own that can display the game properly. However, I was hoping that I could play it on the big screen using its HDMI out, which technically I can, but on any of my screens I've tried this, it shows up too squished, instead of a 4:3 square, it shows up more like a 2:1 vertical rectangle. It stinks. Ok, back to the Egret II.
It sad that the Joystick on the Egret II doesn't feel as good as the Astro City Mini, bummer for the price. I did notice that it said by the Egret's joystick, 4 and 8 way. Does it allow you to change the configuration? Just curious.
Back in the day, I would've been all over this tiny unit. To play the actual arcade games at home has always been a dream. But now that I can play Arcade games on replicas that have full size controls and screens, making these smaller handheld version more display only pieces, and given I have no nostalgia for the look of this cabinet and probably wouldn't display it as I'm saving real estate for mini machines I grew up with (yes, I'm even running out of room for that now :P :) ), even at $100, for me, it would probably sit somewhere in a box stored.
This is a cool unit for sure, and if circumstances were different, and I had unlimited room, it would be another one to collect. I'll be living vicariously through you this time. But it is a great way to display a mini Elevator Action machine!
    vgv

Hey Pdubs! Fantastic review, this is a neat unit and stands apart for being so unique. As for the UI, as someone who's designed GUI's, I personally appreciate a simple design because most are waaay over engineered and complicated. Great video!

FYI there was a firmware update that fixes a few issues. Most notably the input lag. You may this check out. Your unit may have the most up to date firmware. Also fixes aspect ratio issues on some games.

1:47 The Egret II Mini Blue Edition actually comes with 50 marquee cards. 40 for each of the built in games, and 10 for the paddle and trackball games. The marquee card that you showed at 2:03 is Puchi Carat, which is one of the 10 paddle and trackball games for the Egret II Mini.

It's a good gaming system with a solid lineup, and the screen size and button lay doesn't seem cramped, even with my medium-sized hands.

Great review. You talked about the size a lot, but seems like it’s to big to carry and too small if you already have the Taito games. It would have been cool to see it next to your Sega unit and a New Wave Replicade to get a better perspective on the size. Best part the rotating screen worst part is the price. I think $99 should be the price point, but doubt it would go that low. Good info as always!

It's basically 1/4 scale, the Egret mini II is the same size as the top half of a numskull quarter arcade if that helps 🤔

Watched the whole video and didn't catch any mention. Looked like there was a "4" and "8" on the control panel. Is there an adjustable joystick restrictor plate built into the machine?

Just got mines today. The 🕹️ is little lacking. I've only checked out a few games. The emulation seems on point. A CRT filter would've been nice. The smooth filter isn't great, but no biggie. I feel they should've included a gamepad for $200. I mean I got the Samurai Showdown Neo Geo mini for $130 with two controllers included. Other than that it's dope and I'm stoked to have it.

Some reviewers purchased unit did not come with the cards or stickers, I spotted a deal on a Japanese site for the unit at £81 and £26 shipping from Japan to the UK.
I am thinking of getting it, I have seen some hacks to use the MAME ROMS but I want to be able to backup the default OS before I do anything like that, I don't want to brick the unit!

Not sure what taxes you get hit with in the US, but to the UK & EU it's cheaper to order from am@zon Japan. Mine worked out at £145/$180 for the arcade memories bundle, delivery was pretty quick as well.

For that price you should be able to add and remove games. I have no interest in 90% of the random games on this thing.
