- Don't worry, I didn't forget about this! The self-proclaimed ruler of Dream Land has appeared in almost as many games as Kirby himself, but how has his character fared over the years? Is he still the greedy king he was introduced as, or has evolved into a true star warrior? Let's take a look and see if Dedede really deserves his title as king!

There actually is an explanation for his motives in Kirby 64! According to the Japanese character descriptions, Dedede at first didn't want to face Kirby after losing to him again, but then decided to go with them anyway because he didn't want them going on their own! It's kind of sweet, really

And he still ain't gonna let any harm come to his subjects due to clearly dangerous matters, specially if it involves Dark Matter, whether we're talking about one of the Waddle Dees, a child, or even his biggest rival. If they wanna do something about it, I can still see him feeling the need to go along, as if it was his duty, no matter how unwilling or even afraid he may be at first.

He's a big himbo and I'm here for it.
He's not bad, just a bit of a glutton with somewhat selfish tendencies and who's also Kirby's rival. Of course he's still gonna challenge him to a fight every now and then. Plus, if you're a king and you see that you're being bested and defied by one of your subjects, you'd probably want to "put that person in their place", so to speak. I bet that, right now, when he fights Kirby out of his own volition, it's mostly to prove that he is the king of Dream Land and that his rule is law to everyone, even Kirby. That doesn't mean he has succeeded in that so far, but eh, he'll probably keep on trying.

I love Dedede in Forgotten Land, the moment he went back to save a single waddle Dee and risk death, is a total chad moment!
My only problem with that scene is it should have been the Beast Pack as well as a bunch of the little enemies he was up against to show off how strong he really is.

Shit like that is why I love Dedede and a lot of Kirby villains. Some of them actually change and learn. Is it generic and cheesy? Hell yeah. But this is Kirby, and the fact that so many characters learn to change makes it even better when villains like Marx are completely irredeemable and manipulative. Dedede is my favorite Kirby character because I adore his arch of going from a stereotypical selfish gluttonous self-titled king to actually redeeming himself and learns from Kirby's purity.

One small detail that I love is that in Dedede's battle in Revenge of the King, the only person in the stands is Bandana Dee.
In your previous fight, the stands were filled to the brim with people wanting to watch the fight. Hell, even some Mario characters show up. But this time? The only person Dedede wants to see this battle is the person who (At the time, and probably still) he trusts most, his second in command. It's not about glory, it's personal.
That's pretty brilliant! Part of me also sees that as Bandana Dee being worried about both Triple D and Kirby, and how this fight may have reached beyond the limits of what's considered reasonable.
King Dedede update: In Kirby and the forgotten land, he tries to look for Kirby initially, but gets brainwashed again. However when he stops being controlled he saves a random waddle dee and chooses to stay behind to fend off a wave of enemies. After the main story it is revealed that despite being beaten up by Kirby, he was able to defeat the wave and escape. If he is this caring to the waddle dees when it really matters, then it is no wonder a lot of them are loyal.

A very great analysis! I agree with most of your points regarding Dedede's development. But I wouldn't say his Star Allies pause-screen is entirely without new information. Even though it mostly states his previous development, it does feature one notable difference from his past descriptions. He isn't mentioned as "self-proclaimed king" but rather as "self-made king". I think it's pretty important, as it shows that people of Dream Land actually came to accept him as such and he himself accepted the responsibility of being a king instead of just using it as an excuse to do whatever he wants.
Also regarding Bandana Dee video... There's always Kirby Battle Royale. ;)
I cannot stress enough how I grateful I am for this video, by the way. Dedede is one of my favorite fictional characters and it saddens me that his mainstream perception is solely based on memes from the anime, while in games he is far more nuanced and interesting. I'm glad you gave him justice here.

@@klu698 Firstly good eye. I never noticed the change from self proclaimed to self made. That's pretty cool. Secondly, Dedede is one of my favourite characters too and half actually comes from Right Back At Ya and it's memes (RBaY Dedede is something else). While it can be sort of disheartening for people to see Dedede as absolutely nothing but a meme instead of that AND a nuanced character like I do, at least there's the fellow Kirby fans who know what he's all about. That's enough for me.

I think the Super Smash Bros. Brawl cutscene that shows Dedede hugging Kirby in a sweet embrace after a long time apart pretty much confirms they are good friends now
I just realized why Triple Deluxe has so much Dedede in it. It's because Triple Deluxe = 3 Deluxe = 3D (because it's on the 3DS), and D 3 times is "Dedede"
I think the best lore bit I remember reading about Dedede is that the reason why the Waddle Dees respect him so much as a king is because he actually takes the time to get to know them and plays games with them.
Dedede is by far, hands down my favourite character ever. There might be better, more fleshed out characters out there but Dedede will always be special to me. He's subtley grown over the years from a glutonous prick to a respectable monarch and lovable goof. He may not be the greatest at times, but the point is he tries. I just loved his bond with Meta Knight in KF2 and his close knit with Bandana Dee. It's so nice to see. I hope he keeps clobberin along, even if he get possessed for the billionth time (I know the clobber thing doesn't make sense but I was getting a Right Back at Ya reference in here somewhere.)

i think theres definitely enough to analyze about bandana waddle dee. his history is not as extensive as dedede's, but i still think theres something worth taking a look at there. something that jumps out to me as interesting is his shift from being dedede's second-in-command to more of a best friend character to kirby. you would definitely want to look at spinoffs and outside material for that one, like the apple juice song. maybe also throwing in a little look at waddle dees in general to add a little fluff to it, since they have been a mainstay since the beginning.

He would definitely have a shorter video due to well being new compared to the other 2 but I believe seeing as how his spin off and outside sources like his music and Novel incarnations are really consistent, I don't think it'd be crazy to use those as little tidbits.
Also no one else brings this up but the credits of KF2 suggest Bandee was the canonical partner for Kirby (by him being the only character who has his player 1 colors and seeing as how he's the only character who isn't Kirby you start out with and the only one in that one KF2 demo.

I wonder if we're considering Kirby 64's Waddle Dee _the_ Bandana Dee, or just another friend of Kirby that happens to be a Waddle Dee.
I dunno, it's like the Dark Matter Trilogy games try to keep themselves away from those mainstay concepts of Kirby as much as they can. Like, Meta Knight doesn't even has as much as a mention in any of these games, despite his main appearances in Adventure and Super Star Saga at that point. Odd, to say the least.
@@Mike14264 I think that's just a byproduct of the fact that the Dark Matter games had a separate director, Shinichi Shimomura, from Sakurai's main games at the time. So they likely just had different ideas of how to handle the series. I'd argue Meta Knight wasn't really established as a main character until the anime came along.
As for the 64 Waddle Dee's identity, I have a feeling it's probably something the franchise won't ever fully answer and instead leave it up to fans to choose whatever scenario they like best. It's been hinted that they could be the same character at least once, but never outright confirmed. No matter what, I have to imagine Bandana's current series role as Kirby's friend that acts as a sort of ambassador for Waddle Dees as a whole was at least somewhat inspired by 64.

@PaintraSeaPea: The closest thing we'll probably get to an official answer is one of Star Allies' Title Screen animations, after the Patch that added Adeleine and Ribbon to the Dream Helper roster.
In it, Kirby, Adeleine, and Ribbon are resting as they wait for King Dedede and _a Parasol Waddle Dee_ to catch up - this scene is likely representative of a homage to Kirby 64, taking place just after the Cutscene when Dedede decides to help out. The chance for HAL to verify this Waddle Dee as becoming the Bandana Dee we know was there, yet not taken, to me implying that Bandana Waddle Dee *is not* the same as the Waddle Dee in Kirby 64...

@@eclecticsoffy He already did. Like in Mario RPG or Super Paper Mario. But they're still enemies in the end. But I guess that's one of the reasons fandom exist. I make Super Mario 64 Bloopers, and my character Aubrin created a cloning machine in order to create a Peach clone but with a personality similar to Bowser. So they get along, Bowser now has his own Peach and leaves the Mushroom Kingdom alone.

When it comed to Dedede beating Dark Meta Knight, I think it's pretty obvious that both he and Meta Knight have canonically been becoming stronger as the series progresses, so while Dark Meta Knight remained mostly stagnant trapped in the Dimension Mirror, Dedede and Meta Knight had both surpasssed what they were capable of during the time of Amazing Mirror.
I love what Forgotten Land did with his character where he sacrifices himself so that Kirby and the Waddledees can make it to the elevator while he says behind to hold off the Beast Pact. It's nice to see him as a selfless king who'd sacrifice himself to protect his subjects
Dedede being perhaps one of the most heroic characters in the smash bros brawl subspace emissary was my personal introduction to him as a kid and probably the reason why I love him so much today!

You know, I'm never really bothered by Dedede's weird 3DS design until I think about how weird his 3DS design is and become bothered by it.

there is a theory that "big arm dedede" is not just random, but forshadowing to the first form of void termina.
He is the greatest badass in the kirby games. This dude managed to survive being possessed dozens of times and is still up after being defeated by kirb many times.
Dedede has come a long way since his antagonistic beginnings in Kirby's Dreamland. Whereas most game franchises would have religated him to purely "villain" status, Sakurai clearly had bigger intentions for the character as years went on. He and the rest of Hal Labs. wanted Dedede to be more than just the big-bad Kirby beats up every now and then, they wanted him to have character, something that oozes from every Kirby game. One of the biggest strengths Dedede has had over the course of the games is his pure expressiveness. He has so much personality that comes out in his facial expressions and body language that few other Kirby characters show, aside from Kirby himself. That alone goes to show the love the team at Hal put into Dedede over the years and cemented him as iconic to the series as the namesake's.
Of course, you can't ignore the impact the anime had on his character, considering 4Kids took such a wild interpretation on the character giving him the accent and all that. Meme culture on the internet put Dedede into a whole new spotlight and I like that! It gives him that much more depth to his overall character, even if the anime isn't canon or anything.
I thoroughly enjoy King Dedede, hell I main him in Smash Ultimate. He is one of the most iconic Nintendo characters alongside Kirby and for good reason. Great video, Silvery. Thank you for showcasing the King in all his goofy, lovable glory.

Regarding Squeak Squad, my headcanon is that Dedede and Meta Knight used to be an adventuring duo before drifting apart. That's why Dedede has an imprisioned Dark Nebula and why Meta Knight knows exactly what it is.
Meta Knight was given one of the star rod pieces during the Nightmare fiasco, so that proves he and Dedede knew and trusted each other before Kirby got involved.
That actually makes "Kirby Fighters 2" more special. They're officially back together (you can take this statement either way)
A nice, long in depth video about my favorite video game character of all time, and I couldn't be happier with it. You talk about how he did start as a villain, but continuously grew throughout the series to become a hero. I especially love how powerful the speech starting at 24:49 was about who Dedede really is as a character, and I hope more and more people see this video so the misconception of King Dedede being labeled as a villain can END.
Another thing. I know Smash isn't canon, but in Brawl Dedede continued his heroic actions by stealing Wario's trophy car with Luigi, Ness and Peach/Zelda, gave them badges to protect them from Tabuu's trophy spell(Might I add, even going as far as to give the princess HIS OWN badge, thus self sacrificing his safety), and hugged Luigi, Ness and Kirby.

I loved this analysis!! King Dedede is such a great character! I never thought that in Kirby Super Star Ultra that was him turning a new leaf. It actually makes a lot of sense when you look at future games. It makes me think about smash bros brawl when Dedede was so happy to see Kirby and when he helped save everyone with his Dedede pins!

I don’t know if you’ll do another analysis video anytime soon to include Dedede’s depiction in Forgotten Land, but I *love* the side of him we got to see in that one cutscene after Forgo Dedede’s defeat. It really shows the Dedede that really takes his role as a king seriously, and it shows how much he truly cares about his friends and subjects.
After one of the rescued waddle dees trips and falls as Kirby and the gang are running to get to an elevator to escape the charging army of animals, Dedede *goes back to help it*. One might’ve expected Dedede to keep going, and Kirby would’ve probably gone to help the waddle dee instead, because previous series installments have depicted him as a bit cowardly and selfish. But no, he goes back to save one of his random servants, because that’s the kind of thing a good king would do. Not only that, but he realizes that he and the waddle dee wouldn’t make it to the elevator in time, so he tosses the dee into the elevator and goes up against the army of animals *by himself*, like an absolute badass.
This cutscene was my absolute favorite part of the game, just because of how it depicted Dedede. I hope he has more moments like that in future games, because I think that moment made him my new favorite Kirby character. There’s no way he could be depicted as an antagonist, or simply a cruel, selfish king anymore after that.

I like to believe that King Dedede stole the food in the first game just to fight Kirby, because Kirby also loves food and he wanted to challenge him to prove he is better, which is why he taught himself Kirby’s inhale.
I've known about the Kirby games for a while, but something recently made me discover a newfound love for Dedede. A large part of it is probably his awesome theme: with his constant appearances, he often gets a remix of his theme, and each of them is great!
However, there's something about his rivalry with Kirby that seems different from other Nintendo characters. Note: I don't really follow the exact lore or what parts are "canon", so this is more my personal perception. For one, his rivalry is very personal: he's not trying to kidnap a princess or take over the kingdom. He already has everything he wants, except a victory over Kirby. In addition, the fact that he's not the final boss, not some Dark God, makes his tenacity all the more inspiring. Another interesting note is that each time he's mind controlled, his theme still plays, so I like to think of his mind control fights as amplifying his rivalry rather than remaking his personality from scratch.
With all that said, I was hoping you would mention Kirby Battle Royale. I don't know anything about the game other than that Dedede is the final boss, not mind controlled, and his theme in that game has the "Kirby's Triumphant Return" leitmotif, which is usually reserved for the most epic moment, and makes me think that Dedede has actually managed to become enough of an opponent for Kirby to take him seriously.

I love how after beating Forgo DeDeDe and the cutscene he throws the waddle dee to safety, staying back to let kirby, elfilin, and bandana dee if playing co-op pass safely. I just love how hr has changed, little details like that make me love Kirby so much more!

Dedede is the leader of the Waddle Dees. No other person inspires and protects them as much as he does. He is willing to sacrifice himself just to save even one. They will follow him everywhere. He is their brother, their captain, their King.
Dedede's body is very precious, comfortable and also free real estate. Every bad guy wants to get inside him.
My guess is that when it comes to raw strength Dedede is the strongest on pop star but Kirby and Meta Knight have techniques which makes them stronger fighters. Still hurts about the low tier though.
In return to dreamland a idle animation on the title screen shows the characters relationship at that point. Dedede makes a face at Kirby then he and Bandana de laugh while Metaknight looks away and Kirby is confused
Now he's considered kirby's rival and he is selfless with his waddle Dee's.

Well in Forgotten Land it seems Dedede’s possessed again. But at least he’s snapped out of it by the end and stays behind to protect Kirby and the waddle-dees.

Once again gets processed in this game, brainwashed to aid in capturing his own Waddle Dees, but once freed, he immediately tends to his waddle dees, and when even one waddle dee came to risk, he threw the waddle dee to safety, then stood up against a stampeed of animals to protect them. After these events, not sure what else he might be doing, but he can be found lounging around in town with his waddle dees.

I think by the time of Kirby Fighters 2 it's important to remember that all of the big 3... or big 4 have developed quite the bonds with each other... ie despite facing them in battle Kirby actually mentions that without the artifact of power they were using the two would still be worthy opponents, thats quite a lot of respect given how massively powerful the pink puff is.
Here’s a (GAME) theory from me. If Dark Nebula is related to Dark Matter, what if Dedede knew this and locked it up in a chest so he couldn’t be possessed anymore or lower the frequency/odds of getting possessed again?

This was a wonderful video! i love King Dedede! Also in Triple Deluxe, you forgot to mention it is technically not a misunderstanding, the Dream Stalk really did chose Dedede! It brought both Kirby's house and Dedede's castle, and nothing else, cos both are the heroes of Dream Land! And without Dedede Kirby couldn't have beaten Sectonia! So even the Dream Stalk recognizes Dedede as a hero!
Althought Dedede and Meta Knight doesn't have mutch participation on star allies and doesn't show too mutch about them... It does for kirby's history, and that is something that never happened before.

The thing that will always make Dedede my favorite Kirby character is the fact that out of the main three of Kirby, Meta Knight, and the King, Dedede is the most... normal.
Kirby's an entity with a literal pocket dimension for a stomach.
Meta Knight is a master swordsman with bat wings that can teleport.
Dedede? He's a penguin with a hammer. He may have an army, but he never really uses it. And yet, despite his constant possessions by eldritch beings and the fact that he should be out of Kirby's league in every way, Dedede is still one of the few Kirby characters to constantly give Kirby a good fight.

Y'know, the length of this video compared to the others shows how much Dedede has grown and evolved as a character, which, in my opinion, culminates in his actions in Forgotten Land (no spoilers, don't worry).

I think it's a matter of perception. Dedede is an idiot not a bad guy! He stole their dreams by accident.
I don't think it was common knowledge that the star rod is important to peoples dreams, otherwise it would've been guarded.
He stole the food because he lives on a mountain that's lacking food.
I know Squeak Squad was kind of a confusing mess (which I really can't blame them for since it was the first main series game after Sakurai left HAL and before Kumazaki replaced him as director), but hear me out for a sec; given Dedede's more heroic side being established at this point in the series, it's possible he ventured through the depths of space on his own accord, to capture Dark Matter's leader in a chest and prevent them from ever coming back to Dream Land. A decision which could have also been fueled by Dedede's desire to not be possessed every week.
That still leaves a few loose ends though, like where does Meta Knight come in? Well... he's Meta Knight. Does he really need an excuse? I'm sure he was just mad he wasn't included in the Dark Matter games, and wanted to secure his spot in the newest title by directly interfering with the plot.
...But it's also likely MK has fought DM on his own before. Which could also explain his absence during those three games. So knowing what DM is capable of, he knew Kirby could not open that chest! And instead of talking this out with him like a normal person, he takes a page from the book of Dedede and swoops into action to steal the chest without explaining anything.

I loved Dedede in the cartoon as well, at the beginning of the series he hates Kirby, but by the end he actually respects Kirby and only continues to send monsters to fight Kirby so the little pink guy can get stronger.

I really hope eventually you can go over his big scene from forgotten land. I won’t spoil anything since the game is fairly new, but it really adds some depth to dedede as a whole
I love how Dedede TRIES to be honorable like Meta Knight, and even then his idea of honorable is *an electric cage grudge match where he gets a cool rocket-powered missile hammer* .
With Forgotten Lands release we've got a confirmation of the relationship between Kirby and Dedede being that of a freindly rivalry.
We also get confirmation that the reason Dedede's troops respect him so much is not just his authority, but he cares for them, with Dedede sacrificing himself to save a singular Waddle Dee and hold back the beast pack as long as possible.
I could be wrong but I don't think that Forgo Dedede is the same Dedede
