    Fine old machine plenty of character & patina . That course over the Black Mountains looks ideal for running in a new bore & rings ,& for bedding in parts . I was watching it on my big smart TV ,& enjoyed every minute of the ride ,excellent stuff 👍

    Mountaineering at 92! Intrepid ride for you both. Every day is a school day, I had no idea that manufactures made tyres specific to side car set up.

    I had one of those. Mine was a '35 Model X Matchless. Same forks, wheels, hand shift, etc. It was running when I bought it, but very poorly. Pulled it apart and found that the wrist pin on one cylinder had machined a deep slot in one of the cylinders, indicating that it had been running that way for some time. Usually, when wrist pins push out their clips and move over like that it's a sign that either the rod is bent or that the cylinder bore is not perfectly square to the crankshaft, or the bore is not square to the cylinder mating surface. Anyway I had the machine shop work done, rebuilt the crank, had a set of nice Venolia pistons made for it, painted some bits, stainless spokes, etc......then got very busy with a new job and, reluctantly, sold it.
    Re the oil on the left side of the tire: My plan was to use an O-ring chain on the primary side, obviating the need to have any oil in the primary case. Mine had cast iron heads and I was thinking of making alu heads for it, among other things....

    AJ Stevens & Co Ltd, They built their first 50 degree V twin Model A in 1915 called a "Double Purpose" 4 H.P. 550cc's. Imagine that power 😊. Another great run out Paul 👍. I think that S1/S2 is quite a rare model. AJS and Sunbeam Motorcycles (John Marston) both of Wolverhampton fantastic history. I have a 1927 Sunbeam Model 6 sport long stroke, side valve single unbelievably reliable with drum brakes that work pretty good. Lighter than a V Twin with a Brooklands silencer great sound. Hope you get hold of a AJS "Big Port" single one of the days you would enjoy that ATB.

    A 92 year old machine, still carrying on as it was built to do. Sweet.
    Interesting that this bike had a full oil system, unlike the total loss oiling used by some of the other machines you’ve run from this period.

    • @paulhenshaw4514
      @paulhenshaw4514  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Phil, the owner told me it is total loss, but some oil is returned to the tank. I haven't really got my head around that one yet, though!

      @@paulhenshaw4514 Perhaps the valve gear is overboard and the sump is dry. Were there two pumps when the motor was apart?

    • @paulhenshaw4514
      @paulhenshaw4514  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      There are two pipes leading to and probably from the oil pump, but I didn't refit the outer timing cover, which carries the oil pump, as the magneto couldn't be fitted until the engine was in the frame, which the owner took care of, so I never got a good look at the 'plumbing'.

    Not sure if that’s an advance or a choke by your left thumb. What is interesting, is that the control itself is the same as those found on bikes well into the ‘70s.

    • @paulhenshaw4514
      @paulhenshaw4514  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Phil, the choke and A/R levers are recent items, I would say, possibly bicycle ones. The A/R is on the left and it is tight wire advance.

    Hi Paul another great video, thanks for taking the time to do these. I was looking at the video and was wondering what the thing was on the top of the girder forks, then worked out it was a pair of mole grips. Are they there to hold something together or just for running repair’s. Forgot to say what a wonderful bike.

    • @paulhenshaw4514
      @paulhenshaw4514  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think there must be a rather shot seal behind the gearbox sprocket and / or the gearbox is topped up too full, there doesn't appear to be a level plug. Yes, pushrod covers are missing / off and some thicker stuff in the gearbox, and the correct amount of it should certainly help.

    Lovely old bike, to think it’s still going at 91+ years old is testament to the engineering. Also, you have some great countryside around there. Side question: what helmet are you using?

    • @paulhenshaw4514
      @paulhenshaw4514  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks. Gosh, that helmet - I have had it ten years now and still consider it to be 'new'! It has a woman wearing bullet belts on it and I bought it at the Bristol show, 2012. I will have to take a look tomorrow to check the make!

    • @paulhenshaw4514
      @paulhenshaw4514  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That can vary, it depends on what feels comfortable for their engines really, although I like to keep north of 40 - 45 mph on the main road stretches if possible.

  • @tjr1064
    @tjr1064 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Betcha they slogged it too - more engines have been poked by slogging at low revs, than ever was by reving them out - cheers!

    • @paulhenshaw4514
      @paulhenshaw4514  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I too am a great believer in using fairly high revs and light loads when running in. Slogging is also a good way to see off a big end early.

      @@paulhenshaw4514 hi Paul, have you done a video on the running-in process at any time? It would be good to know your thoughts on this as there seem to be a number of schools of thought regarding mileage required, rev limits and trip distance and cooling down breaks etc.

    • @paulhenshaw4514
      @paulhenshaw4514  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi David, not as such, but if you watch any of my 'Asbo' Bullet rides on here, most of those engines are freshly rebuilt, many with new bearings, rebores and new pistons etc and often those clips show the first time out after such work.

    Combatting errant sheep on the way up an due to its age and a certain lack of power but still a game old bird for its vintage.Definitely what you'd call an experience compared to the Star Trek bikes you get now. Complete with natty mole wrench for those exciting moments? Sorry sound track just about inaudible for my ancient ears. Would appreciate a subtitled annotation but understand this may affect the length of recording.

    Did you check the ring gaps?

    • @paulhenshaw4514
      @paulhenshaw4514  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, and they were well on the large side at not far off 1 mm, despite the pistons, bores and rings being new and the piston to bore clearances being 0.006", but I think alloy pistons in iron barrels can sometimes expand too rapidly compared with the iron barrels, causing temporary partial seizures when newly rebuilt engines of this kind are put under too much strain too soon.
