  • Over the weekend, I took the KTEL bus from Athens to Nafplio, Greece to spend the weekend there. If you love fortresses/castles, Nafplio is for you! The town is also very beautiful with stunning views. Nafplio is also a great day trip from Athens as the bus goes frequently and if you have rented a car, the drive is easy.

My lovely home town ! Nafplio was the first capital of Greece and whichever direction you look their is beauty and history. The first high school is the town hall building today . The first Pharmacy the first customs building the first syntagma square and the statue of Kolokotronis in the park is the same as the one they have in Athens created by the same person. The national art museum is interesting to visit in gorgeous neoclassical building. Places of interest 30min away is the ancient theatre of Epidauros which has plays every summer on the weekends . 20min away is the ancient city of Mycenae where king Agamemnons grave is. Dates back to 1500BC

Actually the first capital was Aegina,1827 Aegina was officially designated as the -temporary- first capital of the newly formed Greek state, a status it maintained until 1829 because nafplio wasn't safe in that time. In Nafplio killed the first governor of Greece ioannis kapodistrias.

Stayed in Nafplio last spring with my family and we loved it. If you follow the coastal path in the opposite direction (by the way the most beautiful path you can imagine), you will find Karathona beach after about 2 miles. It's a giant crescent-shaped sandy beach with stunning views of the surrounding peaks. The first beach restaurant with loungers is called "Utopia", which is a most apt description of the place. Highly recommend. You could of course take a taxi instead of the path, but getting there along the walking path is more than half the fun!

One of my favorite spots to visit in Greece and the town where my son was baptized in 1991! Especially enjoyed the waterside cafes for breakfast and visiting the castle.

It was so interesting watching this after I spent 10 wonderful days in September there. It looks like I have more to see. People said I would get bored and I didn't. My friend and I packed our days with things to see, and for a day or two we just chilled.
The beach at the end of the coastal walk which we did almost every day does actually have a rocky beach you can lie on, Arvanitia Beach. We liked it but you do need your rock shoes, and it's not strictly a jump off the rocks kind of beach. You can lie there, swim from the beach, and jump off the rocks if you want. As for Palamidi Castle, I wish I had more time there. I did the same with the cab, and I found the cab ride at 30 euros steep, my friend and I shared. When the cab waits for you, you can't really take your time and explore. We did walk up to the other fortress and explored and saw the abandoned hotels, which is too bad that they are. The sailing cruise is amazing, make sure you do that one day!

It’s all in what you make of it right! I am not a fan of rock beaches but it was so hot that I was regretting not bringing my swimsuit!

The coast road is still technically closed, but everyone just walks around the gates. One of the best ways to get up to Palimidi is to get the hop on hop off bus tour. You can then spend 2-3 hours at Palimidi if you want. It is 8 euro as far as I remember, and you get a nice little tour of Nafplio with a commentary as well.

/Pedant mode on/ For those confused by the spelling of Nafplio, in Greek it's Nauplio (Ναυπλιο) with an upsilon υ
The upsilon became the latin V which in turn gave the modern letters U and V because it had the two pronunciations depending on the following letter. In this case it's the V pronunciation : Navplio therfore Nafplio. Also all the ancient Greek polis had a fortress called the Acropolis. Acron meaning extremity. In the case of Nauplio the acropolis is called Acronauplio. /End of pedant mode/

Nafplio is an incredible town . I've been and stayed there more than 15 times. Tolo ,an adjacent little town ,has a wonderful beach as does an area called Karathona. One mistake you made was to ask the cabbie to wait for you .It would have been far cheaper to get another one back from up there or even walked down which is much easier than going up
If you want a similar experience go to Monemvasia.

Nafplio is so beautiful. I love that you show how to take the bus from Athens. I have a couple of questions... I was planning on 3 nights in Nafplio but then I added 2 nights to Meteora so now our trip to Greece is 17 nights rather than 14 and this doesn't include the overnight flight from the East Coast of the US. I know you can never have too much time but, do you think this makes sense..... Flight from the US then flight to Santorini for 3 nights, Ferry to Naxos for 4 nights, Ferry to mainland and take the bus to Nafplio for 3 nights, then train to Meteora for 2 nights and finally end in Athens for 5 nights. If you had to cut any of these nights where would you? I don't want to short change Athens but should we do 3 nights Meteora and 4 nigths Athens since it will take a while to get to Meteora? Is this a good order for using public transportation? I really don't want to drive. I know it is a lot of back tracking to Athens to go to Nafplio and Meteora but I think everyone will love both. It really is hard to decide because I'm watching all of your videos and each place you go and every walk you video makes me want to add them to the list! So even though it is hard to decide, thank you so much for making these videos because it really shows me how to get around.

    • @agirlandherpassport

I adore Nafplio. I go there with the family at least once a year. It is my ambition to retire there one day. Just a stone's throw from Syntagma Square is the church of Agios Spyridonas where the first governor of the modern Greek state, Ioannis Kapodistrias, was shot and killed by opposing factions. The bullet hole is still on the outer wall of the church for everyone to see.
