I'm English, I lived in Wales as a child (dad was in the air force), I learned some Welsh at school and we were also taught a little about the history of attempts to suppress the language. I was delivering to a school in North Wales some years ago. I mentioned to the head teacher that I was hoping to deliver to another school in the area but wasn't sure if they would still be there. He phoned the school to let them know that I was nearby. Before dialling he looked at me and said that he would be speaking in Welsh and was I ok with that. I said yes because I know it's important to them to keep the language in everyday use.

I've experienced the same language switch on several occasions, in pubs, in shops and even in a fish and chip shop. Everyone speaking in English until we spoke then absolutely everyone switching to Welsh. The last time, I was sat at a table on the pub balcony overlooking the beach at Aberdaron with my wife. We'd got some drinks we brought from inside the pub. The balcony was busy with 50+ people on a sunny day. Everyone was speaking English until we spoke. You could hear a pin drop. We were stared at by the whole balcony then everyone spoke in Welsh. Why would they do that if not to verbally abuse visitors?

I visit Wales regularly & I have never witnessed any of this tripe, yes the Welsh feels like their identity is being eroded but that's something the Welsh parliament need to address, a Welshman once told me some hostility exists because English ppl make no effort with Welsh language & most of the time don't try to engage with them kind of looking down your nose at them & that's how they feel.

Its nothing new. When I was a kid we went on holiday twice to Wales and the deliberate switch to Welsh when you entered some shops was done to show their contempt. It was really dumb because everyone on the caravan sites used to avoid the shops where it was known to happen, they must have lost a fortune. We also had encounters with other locals who were kind and friendly. In grown up life I've worked with Welsh colleagues and they exhibited the same variation in attitudes to the English, from none at all to arrogant big mouthed contempt.

I went to the chippy in the village I was in and was greeted in Welsh and from the tone of their voices I could tell they were being friendly and happy. I've mostly been to South Wales while visiting my friend there, I find the Welsh very accomodating and unlike some English beaches I've been to the Welsh beaches tend to be kept clean. I've heard them speaking Welsh in pubs and I kind of expect it since ya know, im in Wales. I actually like hearing the Welsh language its quite calming compared to English. I went to north Wales recently on a little road trip for the day, the views were really nice and I had a little trouble with my car's heater (probably themostat) I was a little concerned so I went to a local Welsh mechanic who put my mind at ease saying I should be fine until I get home. I stopped at a pub and it looked nice the staff were friendly but the fish I ordered came luke warm, not a big deal I'll just avoid that pub for food next time. So yeh if their is Welsh resentment towards the English I don't see it.

I used to visit Wales quite a lot back in the last century and never had a negative reaction. There was an anti-tourism `nationalist' movement that caused a brief stir called "The Sons of Glendower" who set a few holiday homes on fire, but not much else. Frankly, preserving an obsolescent hyper-minority language that is largely unknown throughout the world seems very introspective and anachronistic. If you're going to be bilingual then Spanish or Italian or Chinese as an alternative to English might be a far more useful option...
