It could have been a stressful situation, but it turned out to be quite folkloric in the end.
Welcome to Makoko, the largest floating slum in Africa, I hope you will appreciate this immersion in the heart of this district of LAGOS in NIGERIA.

My stomach dropped every time I saw a young child perched on the end of a boat or in some improvised floating device. I would imagine teaching kids to swim would be a priority, but if it's at the risk of a staff infection or something, they are probably more likely to teach them to stay out the water than to swim in it. Honestly, it's a tough call.

It is called ''the curse of the source''... when people that have most resources have least benefits from them. They lack infrastructure and ''know how''... common thing throughout the history. Sadly, huge part of Western civilization is built on theft, plunder, exploitation of ''third world'' countries. Take Belgium for example... how it is perceived in modern days - land of chocolate, beer, cheese... then take a look at what they did in Congo. Not to mention Spain, Britain, France, United States, Germany, Netherland, Italy... it is an unspeakable crime what they did to Africa.

Lots of banana boats, women steering them, some selling foodstuff and merchandise. It’s amazing , the resilience and will power of a people to survive. I believe that this is one of your best videos ever! if is not the best one! because of many reasons: most people just don't realize the beauty and the historical importance of this place! but this is really one of the most beautiful and historic places in Lagos! and in Nigeria! yet it is rarely or never shown to the turists! for obvious reasons, but most of those are just prejudices and unjust judgements! because this is a very beautiful place! believe it or not! it is living miracle! and it has been that way for more than two centuries! and when you realize that this has lasted for so long you understand better that this is really a living miracle! and now it can be considered an even more impressive miracle! since for many decades people could live like this more easily because there was less people and plenty of fish and pure water around! but over the years as time has passsed now there is much more population, with much more polution, and obviously less puré water and fish to eat because of that! you can even see this problem in this video with those little kids trying to get at least a little fish to eat! so far away from their homes! therefore it almost made me cry that part of this video when you just give away a little bit of money to those little kids far away in that very polluted place just trying to get some little fish to eat!... you could tell by their surprised faces that no one had ever given them anything for free! in their whole lives! and their little and short lives have been very difficult and hard! as you can easily see here!... So it's very nice to hear one of them even tell you: "God bless you"!... and even dance a little bit in this little temporary blusa of happiness!.... This whole video is very beautiful, but this was the best part!.... but all in all it even gave me a new reason and hope to believe to believe more in miracles!... and to keep on believing more in God!

Another experience I was curious about. Makoko is special in many ways. The people have created an unbelievable city on water and the government does not see the benefits of this- instead, they want to ear it down. SMH- you wonder who do they serve? The lack of infrastructure is frightening and I wonder what is the statistic for deaths by drowning, disease by contamination and natural disasters What about the stench of the water? Has the government done any test of the water to see the types of bacteria that exist? What about sanitation? You mentioned the communal bathhouse but how clean and safe is that? What about Covid rate in Makoko? There are many kids and no surprise the fertility rate is high but it is clear that the lack of medical facilities is dire as no one cares chief of which is the government. Disappointed in the lack of care and attention but not surprised. People living on the water is not a novel idea. People living like how they live in Makoko is criminal and the government is to blame for the total don't care attitude of its people.

Have you ever visited really poor countries? Have you ever BEEN in Africa? Not every part of Africa is the same. And history shows, places have been extremely rich and healthy! Or poor and happy and healthy. What we see now, is just our times. Crowded cities are always at risk of deadly diseases. That is a rule of thumb. And, finally GO THERE and see for yourselves. Maybe you will start fighting your kapitalist moron politicians, that would help a lot. Thank you.

While there is poverty here, the world has a lot to learn from the conservation culture. These people have used the most basic of items to survive in a very difficult environment. Maybe our engineers can learn a thing or two. No steel, no plastics, no cement, yet the houses are standing firm and strong.

@@hephaestus198 Thank you. Sensible comment. Africa is bursting with natural resources. Why African leaders (men) for the most part allow this extreme poverty to continue in their nation is mind-boggling. They are so incompentent. I am not afraid to say that if Europeans came to Makoko, they certainly would not allow a community like this to even exist amongst their own. I.e, South Africa, Namibia, Rhodesia, Kenya Please don't make an argument that I am racist. I am Black woman and simply stating facts.
