Zubat in Gen 2 onward: Hey, I can get a Crobat!

Gen 3 and up it actually has some good moves and power to work with, I prefer using it as my Flyer over most birds not named Staraptor.
Zubat: "I am not strong. Or bulky. Or fast. But!"
Scott: "....But??"
Zubat: "....never mind, that's it."
Turns out Zubat was just talking to the rival, trying to guilt Butt into taking it easy on him.
"I am not strong, or bulky, or fast, Butt."
Honestly Zubat has one of my favorite gen 1 backsprites, it looks like a little kid's Halloween costume

Zubat are basically the magikarp of the skies. They’re everywhere. They’re bad. But if you put enough work in they are CRAZY good!

Nice video, about what what I expected from Zubat. About the next challenge (Pidgeot vs Fearow) that both learn nearly the same moves at the end but Fearow has the advantage on that. In the end it will be the bulk of Pidgeot vs the high damage of Fearow. And in these challenges bulkiness seems the most advantageous of the two.
You let it evolve! and you fought mewtwo! this is great man keep doing that!
I think Bite should have had more consideration. It was going really fast so I couldn't tell what vitamins you were buying but Zubat's base speed is salvageable enough to boost with vitamins and outspeed things (except for Lance's Aerodactyl). Bite is one of Zubat's best moves and can flinch which, when combined with Confuse Ray, makes things much safer for it. Personally, I would have gotten rid of Leech Life. Confuse Ray, Bite, Mega Drain and (Wing Attack for Stab Super Effective damage on some types) or (Double Edge for a high damaging move) would have been my choice for moveset. Mega Drain is a great move for Zubat because it lets it attack on the Special side of things and its Special is about the same as its Attack. It's a great way to take out Rock and Ground types and is its best form of recovery.

Between that and the bittersweet feeling of watching the S.S. Anne set sail makes Vermilion city my favorite location in the series.

I'm sure the best early game bird is Spearow due to drill peck.
More than that. Spearow starts with a flying move, Peck. Whereas Pidgey starts with Gust, which in gen-1 was a normal move. Pidgey won't learn a flying move until lv.28, Wing Attack, but in gen-1 that only has 35 base damage, the same as Peck. Meanwhile, just one level after that is when Spearow will learn the vastly superior Drill Peck.
Pidgey will at least be able to compensate with the HM for Fly. Although it might have one final secret weapon that tips the scales back in its favor, Mirror Move.
Am I the only one that finds it funny that only Spearow starts with a flying move?
Real life all birds know peck but in the Pokemon universe Pidgey is so dumb it can't learn a bare bones basic flying move from the start.
All joking aside I never understood why Pidgey never could learn peck, it just doesn't make sense.
@@valor1omega: Gust could have originally been intended as a flying move, but might have been changed either due to oversite or possibly so the more common of the two birds would be less threatening to people starting with a Bulbasaur.

Awesome video. You're stubbornness/determination is world class. Im doing a gold playthrough using only Larvitar at the moment, its had some challenging points but seeing you do this with zubat makes my playthrough look like a cake walk lol

I do adore Zubat; but yeah, it's stats don't really shine through until it evolves so I can understand the pain of sticking with just Zubat. This video was fantastic here; the pause sequence and rapping lass were hilarious edits and I'm always impressed with how well you utilise Mimic in these videos.

I’ve been learning some really great ways to use mimic! I think it might get a bit cookie cutter soon though. Because there appears to be some fairly consistent strats that every Pokémon can use when stealing moves. For instance stealing substitute against Agatha to prevent confuse ray, supersonic, and lessen the impact of hypnosis+dreameater.
Still, it’s funny to note that after 24 or 26 years, there is now a generically consistent strat against Agatha: get her Substitute by Mimic and then use that, then sweep.

Great video! Good to see one of my favorite moves to get some love in this run, wing attack! Gen 1 didn’t love this move.. ps, my favorite Pokémon is Pidgeotto. Ash is ace in the early manga. Can’t wait to see the birds video next week! Keep it up buddy!

As intersting as the base pokemon are, I'm curious to see how the evolved forms will fair. I feel like they might be too easy, but those also might make for some quicker videos. Either way glad to see another upload, keep up the good work!
Scott likes to do evolved forms in the context of double videos where he compares two mons (like the pidgeot/fearow vid next week). Lil more interesting.

I never noticed Blaine's flamethrower tie before! Which is to say, I would never have noticed it if you didn't include the little splash of sugimori art before the gym battles. I have to say the level of polish lately has been incredible. I love seeing the Pokemons current stats in gym battles, and the differences between attempts. It's just an incredible touch.
Looking forward to Big Bird next week. I hope my Gen 1 darling, Pidgeot, can make a decent showing despite its mediocre stats.
Ok now that I actually watched the video and not just the title I would like to say I forgot the bit you started to add to the end and I have now decided I will skip to the end every video and hear that first because its the best.
You’re a beast dude! Love the videos! Have you thought about doing tag team VS videos? Like butterfree and beedrill VS dustox and beautifly. Or tauros and miltank VS gyarados and milotic. Or the nido’s VS someone. Having an extra Pokémon on your team during these playthroughs just opens the door for some interesting strats.
Haven’t thought about that before. It’s a neat idea though!
Oh that was a run filled with miracles one after the other, the only thing you could do is to pray that you won't have to reset again. Zubat is really frail, whenever i use one for a nuzlocke, I always hope that it won't die, before finally evolving it. So good job, for attempting this run again, and learning a lot ever since your Red run with it.
Im not sure if you could have done Erika first and then Surge, in order to decrease the amount of resets in this run, and I think that it would have helped reducing game time and real time as well. Or maybe teaching swift earlier for the Surge fight, would have helped as well.
So whenever you're doing a run with a frail water type or with a flying type, make sure to do Erika first for the exp, to beat Sruge with an ease.
And by the way, I'm really looking forward for the early kanto birds vs video. 😊

NICE, almost miss the vs Newtwo at the end, Great Video. BTW, interesting fact you may or may not know, it's possible to get 5 free pokeball at the beginning portion of game, I never tried this and I bet a lot of people missed this entirely, because this seems like a handicap the game provides for player if gets too hard at beginning, kind of like safari zone entering at yellow, if run out of money, at red & blue you can forget about entering and if you haven't get Surf, you're doomed, but in yellow, keep on talking to gate keeper you will get to enter for free with a single safari ball; anyway requirement for 5 free pokeball is you have to Defeat rival at optional battle at route 22(if you skip the battle and got boulder badge 1st from Brock, this became permanently skipped, I have no idea if you battle rival at nugget bridge 1st, will this still be possible or not because I never tried this), then you must not have any catch ball on you, no catch data in your pokedex and not a full bag(if you have full bag a glitch will happen stating you receive 5 free pokeball and you will never be able to receive them again), go back to Oak's lab talk to Professor Oak, he will give you 5 free pokeball, again I never tried this, you can see why this is easily missed by player, plus if you want to be time efficient, this actually seems like a hassle.
This actually can help certain Pokémon speed up their times! (Specifically Alakazam.) I’ve wanted to she of that strategy for some time now!

I mostly do work in the classical field. So no releases on TH-cam
I actually remember being so upset when I realized I couldn't get back on the SS Anne. I really loved the music to it back then so I had to scour the entire thing and just soak it in from then on.
In terms of playthrough, Golbat is the worst fully evolved Pokémon you can use in gen 1. The strongest move you get via level up is Bite. A normal type move in gen 1 (also wing attack has the same power as peck in gen 1). The TM move pool is horrible too. Only learning normal type moves and mega drain. Golbat does get confuse ray, but confuse ray just turns battles into luck and luck isn't reliable at all
At least Parasect gets auto crit slash and Onix gets access to a earthquake tm found in Silph Co

Parasect has gen 1 spore wich is probablg the strongest status in pokemon history. That said, it's probably still worse than Golbat. Golbat at least has decent speed and attack, so eventually can function even whit bad moves, parasect has 2351736619936 fouboe weaknesses and terrible speed, so it will need to grind a ton just to not get oneshot

Kinda offtopic, but Nidoran Female is adorable with her cheeky lil grin! Generally I prefer the Red/Blue sprites, but Yellow has its gems. I don't think I've ever (consciously) seen the Nidoran Fenale Yellow sprite before, so that was a nice surprise.
