US Army Golden Knights Base Jump off Parriott Mesa, Moab After Class 5 Climb!!

  • We had the Pleasure of Climbing a Stunning & Technical Class 5 Route up Parriott Mesa and then had the unbelievable Fortune of Meeting two Members of the Elite US Army Parachute Team, "The Golden Knights" Conducting a BASE Jump off the Shear to overhanging South Face of the Mesa!
They were great guys, conducting themselves very professionally as they pragmatically went through the process of safely conducting this Death Defying Feat! It was AWESOME and I got amazing footage of it, including Jonathan's Helmet cam footage, so COOL!
The route itself was protected by a couple hand lines, a third missing completely and a poor man's light weight Via Ferrata type cable hand line although all of this "Protection" should be viewed with EXTREME Caution and little confidence, Ropes abrade & deteriorate in sunlight. The cable was 80% worn through! Come prepared to climb this route without expecting safety measures already in place!!!! That said, it was Spectacular! and safely achievable by properly equipped and trained rock climbers. DJI drone footage captured the extensive vistas, jump perspectives and climbing challenges!
As always, a HUGE thanks to my Music Producers, I could never set the Tone without them!

I attempted this route in May 2022. I turned back at the cables. It was still an amazing scenic scramble. Now knowing that the cables are significantly compromised, I am glad I did. Wow, what a view from the top of the Mesa! Thank you for share this adventure!

That was freaking AWESOME! We must do this climb. Took some balls to do it in the snow and ice -- good job! And the Golden Knights? One of the coolest things I've seen on YT.

Thanks Adam! Thankfully only steep trail sections were iced over, if the climbing was icy I would have bailed. We had plenty of death defying moments on that trip and by that last day I was feeling extra vulnerable. Dry rock and the Knights were true blessings! Maybe we could hook up somewhere around there. It’s right out my back door! Cheers Brother

that original cable and bolt system was installed when I was a kid living in the valley in the 1970's. The gentleman who led the install is retired in Moab to this day. We scrambled the pitches around back without ropes or pieces of farm-rope we carried with us. Really good memories including climbing in deep snow in the bowl in the back.

WOW, great story! Thanks for sharing it with us. I'd love to talk him into replacing the existing cables, which as you saw are not in optimal shape 😲! Appreciate your comment sir, Karl 👍

this task will need to be carried forward by a new generation since it is doubtful the original route builders will be up to the job. I certainly appreciated your route video and it brought back memories of youthful unprotected climbs on that mesa.

Thanks John! I’m going to have to try a jump sometime, I used to be a professional paraglider pilot, but never got to do a good freefall on purpose, lol! I did get to do the wind tunnel thing once, I can’t imagine the real thing, flying around in open space.

I used to BASE jump with air force PJ's. My pre-planning was a natty light and fat line, often using a rig I couldn't even remember packing. Them PJ fuckers would be making plans on top of plans until I was like "Bros, this ain't Basra.Killing my buzz."

You know how it is, if you get out there enough, something good is bound to happen, and seems too often! I’m doing my same old thing no mics but, my editor has a new feature called voice, isolation. That works miracles. Luckily, I haven’t had to use it much.
