Didn't remove the wheel or any part of it. Just loosened the two sets of controls on each side of the wheel to make tucking in the suede easier. I believe it was no more hassle leaving the complete wheel on the car.

Did you take off the battery to take off the Airbag and steel?

I got alcantara on my f30 and i love it
Wolud recommend it over a new wheel any day
