5 Dangerous Misconceptions About Cars!

    This video will either save you money or save you from doing something dangerous due to misunderstanding how a certain component on your car actually works. These terrible misconceptions not only put you in danger, but also others on the road around you in danger due to lack of proper maintenance.
    For Example:
    Dear Tesla Owners,
    Regenerative Braking doesn't mean the brake material regenerates. You still have to replace your brakes like any other car would. Not doing so is dangerous and negligent to the safety of other drivers on the road. I swear, some scrublords don't deserve to own Driver's Licenses with how absolutely smooth brain they are. Also for some reason, whenever I say Smooth brains, I say it like how Daithi De Nogla says it cause I can't help it, since it just feels so natural.
    Ye focking Smooth Brains.
    Also Tires don't regrow back tread without assistance. A "Retreadable Tire" still needs to be brought to a professional to be retreaded. They do not magically regenerate tread on the fly. Even the super advanced Good Year Healing Tire, still needs to have liquid added to it.

      @Jvk1166z 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      see, whatever the reason behind calling it an "overdrive gear" is, its not a good one once you think about it for a few minutes. you tell someone it's an overdrive gear, and the logical thing to think is that it makes you drive over your usual maximum speed, especially since most things outside of the car world use the word overdrive in that context. if you tell someone its a cruising gear, they instantly know what the gear is for. one name gets the purpose of the feature across in one word with no extra explanation required, and the other name requires you to explain what it does almost every time if that person isn't already a car person.

    • @sahhull

    • @waremergencypower6024
      @waremergencypower6024 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      In hindsight, overdrive makes sense as a term. Assuming your car has a 6 speed automatic transmission, the car will typically be geared in such a way that the distance between the 4th and 5th gear ratios is narrower than the distance between 5th and 6th.
      One gear over drive.
      “Cruising gears” makes far more sense.

On my roadster they are almost all off (competition mode, so just the braking to keep the car from losing control in most extreme situations) and my SUV I've tried to turn off all the rest, although recently the dealer uploaded an upgrade and turned them all back on without letting me know they reset everything. I first noticed when the lane sensing started fighting me when I had to lean on the outside line while passing a semi leaning on center, and the lane centering kept trying to push me back into the semi. I have to go back to the dealer because it appears the update won't let it turn off - the best one can do is make it ping at you when it thinks you're deviating from the lane.

    1:36 actually regen brakes are less effective at higher speeds and more effective at lower speeds. Think of it like this, regen brakes recover a certain amount of kinetic energy in a fixed time. The thing is the faster you're going in a car your kinetic speed increases exponentially. (K = (1/2)mv^2). K = 2m when v = 2 and K = 8m when v = 4. Because regen brakes recover a fixed amount of energy over a period of time, as the total kinetic energy decreases, removing a fixed amount of energy over time has a greater impact on speed.
    In my own experience in electric cars this has been my experience too. At highway speeds the regen brakes aren't too great especially if you need to stop quick, but they're great for heavy traffic because they are more effective and have greater deceleration power at low speeds. Still think it's stupid people think regen brakes mean it literally regrows brakes though.

    • @SupaKoopaTroopa64
      @SupaKoopaTroopa64 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      A lot of it also has to do with how the regen feel is programed. As long as the total regenerated energy is within the acceptable range of the battery, and the braking force is within the torque range of the motor, the manufacturer can program whatever they want. Often times this means using a constant deceleration factor, while other times it means mimicking engine braking behavior as seen in an IC engine (more brake force at higher revs, less at lower).

    • @IsaPudiyapura
      @IsaPudiyapura 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@SupaKoopaTroopa64 While it's true a lot of electric cars that are trying to mimic the feel of a ICE car, as far as I'm aware this isn't commonplace. I have only regularly driven two electric cars: a BMW i3 and a Tesla Model X. Both cars have their regen force stronger at lower speeds.
      It's very difficult to have a regen system that is dynamically similar to engine braking. Having more brake force at higher speeds would be very inefficient because a regen system is locked by the amount of total kinetic energy it can recoup. Trying to recreate engine braking would mean having the mediocre braking force at high speed and then purposely handicapping the regen braking ability at low speeds which effectively kills any substantial braking forces.
      The whole purpose of regen braking is to recover kinetic energy that you would normally lose while braking during regular driving. In most daily driving situations in an electric car with regen braking you do not need to touch the brake pedal at all outside emergency situations. This is why mechanical brakes on EVs last way longer than ICE cars; they are not used nearly as often. Recreating engine braking would defeat the purpose of this. You can't drive an ICE car with just engine braking as your braking force because you'll crash pretty quick.

    A lot of safety tech annoys the hell out of me. Good when it works, but people get complacent and rely on a very much fallible machine.
    People merge without looking because they have blind spot assistance.
    People don't pay attention to the car directly in front because they have collision warning/mitigation.
    People drive like they're invincible in crossovers and trucks because they think more size = more safe (guess what, it's the opposite because more mass has more energy to dissipate, especially since many crossovers cheat their way into being classified as an offroad vehicle and lack things like side impact protection).
    People drive dangerously in low friction conditions (or, god forbid, forego snow tires in winter) because they think traction control, AWD, and torque vectoring will somehow magically create grip where there is none, and I seriously want to slap Subaru for continuously making this misconception worse every year as snow starts falling and they bang on about their "full-time symmetrical AWD" (a fancy way of saying the most basic, low tech form of AWD on the market).
    I'm all for making cars as safe as possible, but hate when people become reliant on these far from perfect, very much not magic technologies, and hate it far more when manufacturers ENCOURAGE this dangerous behaviour in their advertizing.

    Despite the fact that it looks like a PowerPoint presentation over video... Your videos are so entertaining and interesting, keep up the good work! (I know there's much more effort than a PowerPoint)

    The fact you have to add so much enthusiasts on * your brakes do not grow back * suggest just how many people actually fall for this concept 🤣🤣😂

    in addition you still have to turn on the normal brakes even when your just casually stopping. eddy currents are great for stopping from fast to slow, but not from slow to zero.

      Less than 12% of the probability of your tank full of highly flammable fuel spreading all over you and bursting into flames. And yes, better crash safety scores than ALL of your gas burners.
      You have been fact checked.

    Your 7th gear in your corvette is also a overdrive gear lol not just 8th. You need overdrive to hit higher top speeds.

    • @bentracy7463

      Most cars have one or two overdrive gears, although they might not both be "cruising gears". It might have been better put if he called it a granny gear, which is universally known as a cruising gear. Then again, a friend with an Alfa 164S has a transmission with its highest gearing being 1:1 in 5th, so no overdrive, but it still is his cruising gear. It all just depends on the car, the transmission ratios, and the rear end.

    • @jakegamble9924
      @jakegamble9924 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@bentracy7463 Yes it does, but a lot of cars don't just use overdrive gears for cruising or fuel economy like ridge chaser makes it seem. A lot of cars have overdrive gears for higher top speed.

      @@bentracy7463 Granny gear ain't universally known as a cruising gear, in fact that's the first time I've ever heard of it used as such.
      A granny gear is generally a super short gear (technically 1st gear, but a lot of shifters dont mark them as first) found on 4WDs and trucks, it's called a granny gear because it's uber slow, usually having a 5:1 ish ratio.
