    I activate my turn signal right before I start slowing down for the turn. This way the cars behind you know why you're slowing down, and you don't signal early to the point of making people think you're about to turn earlier. So distance will vary depending on the speed you're driving and how much you need to slow down.

    • @johannesf.2524
      @johannesf.2524 2 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Please do it at least 2 seconds earlier. I hate people who use the indicator late.
      This way the car behind you has the chance to change lanes and pass you, without having to break. Changing lanes while the car in front of you is braking is also more dangerous, because they have to check the decreasing distance towards the car ahead and oncoming traffic on the other lane at the same time.

    • @HCkev
      @HCkev 2 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      @@johannesf.2524 Well, I activate my turn signal long before braking, at this point I just start lifting my foot off the gas pedal. Also, you should keep a proper distance from the car in front of you, a good rule of thumb is the 3 seconds rules, so even if a car suddenly brake check you, you have 3 seconds to react.

      I signal early on one road because everyone goes 30 over on it due to it being a straight road in a construction zone making it 45 when it should be more like 65-70, so everyone tailgates me because I go 10 over, and I've even had people pass me in the median between the 2 lanes of traffic, that's supposed to be used to make a left turn onto another road, I signal early to let the tailgaters know to back off and let me turn into my neighborhood, some asswipes don't back off, but most do

    • @real_dddf
      @real_dddf ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@johannesf.2524 you've got to hate me then. I have the (bad) habit of signalling at the last possible second, sometimes at the same time as turning my wheel. It doesn't have the effect of signalling my intent to turn, only shows the fact that I am turning. Bad habit formed growing up somewhere if you signalled, the guy behind you on the next lane would pump the gas to tailgate the person in front, blocking you from changing lanes. Thus everyone just kinda forced their way in and whoever cared less about intimate contact got the right of way.

  • @johnnymartinjohansen

    Here in Norway:
    - The general advice is to signal minimum 5 seconds before turning or changing lane (time, not distance). The law says you must give others enough time to react to your actions, before you execute them.
    - Staying in the fast lane is legal if there's a lot of traffic. Trucks must always stay in the right lane, unless passing.
    - Not stopping for pedestrians at a crosswalk, is a minimum $400 fine, and 2 "dots" on your driving license. You get different amounts of those for other violations too. 8 "dots" in a 2 year period, and you lose your license, even if a minor offense puts you at 8.
    - Jaywalking is illegal, but I've never heard about the police reacting to it at all.
    - Speeding is always illegal. You can get away with it in certain emergency situations, but that's extremely rare. And there is no "slow poke" law.
    - We have very few stop signs, instead we have yield signs. You don't have to stop at those if it's safe to continue.

    @3:59 Have to comment again, I don't know how this works in your state/country, but in most places there is no speed limit + 10 lane. What's the point of having a speed *LIMIT* if it's ok to go over it? And since the passing lane is to the left of THAT, you're going even FASTER than +10. It's true that in most places cops have an unwritten rule of being flexible if you're less than 10 over the limit (depending on road conditions and traffic), but in your illo, ALL lanes are speed limit. You pass to get around people going BELOW the speed limit. I've been ticketed at < 10 over speed limit.
    That being said, yes, stop driving in the passing lane. Just don't think it's a 'go whatever speed you want to get to the front' lane.

      The thing is, in most European driving culture we are taught to signal relative to time, not pure distance. Time can scale with speed, distance can't. It's like instead of saying you should keep 2 car lengths of distance to the person in front, instead keep 2 seconds of travel distance. That scales with speed and is based on reaction time, rather than a static metric.
      As an example, just signalling 5 seconds before a turn is a habit that works in all scenarios, not just on the Autobahn or on a small side road.

    #6: Safe Following Distance (Don't Tailgate). I am entirely sick and tired of people who think it is safe to follow 5 feet behind me while doing 60MPH+. If something happens in front of me and I have to slam my brakes, we're both going to the junkyard, plain and simple. At 45+, there needs to be 2 car lengths between you and the person in front of you, and 60+, 3 car lengths to give you enough time to react and come to a stop before you rear-end the driver in front of you. You won't get to your destination any sooner if you're trying to dry hump the driver in front of you. Just hang back a little.

    • @MiriaJiyuu
      @MiriaJiyuu ปีที่แล้ว

      Alright so you're correct about tailgating but omg 2 car lengths is not enough at 45+. That is not enough to stop safely! You should be 2-3 SECONDS behind and more than that the faster you are

    • @Dhalin
      @Dhalin ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MiriaJiyuu eh, I think 45-55, if you are not, say, 50+ years old you should be able to slam the brakes on and stop at 2-3 car lengths. Now, maybe if you're getting 50+ you might wanna follow further. Also, you should be watching the road ahead of the car in front of you, a lot of times you should be able to see a potential problem even before the car in front of you hits his brakes.

      Don't forget that on the autobahn, passing someone in the right lanes is illegal. And that there is a speed limit, but it's just a suggestion, not cemented like it is here in the US.

    • @OhMyKMPR
      @OhMyKMPR 3 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      I see a lot of people always worshipping Germany as the holy grail of driving experience but I'll try to lower your expectations a little bit here.
      First of all: Passing on the right is illegal everywhere and most people stay on the rightmost lane. However, that's not always the case in every region of Germany. For example, lots of people around Frankfurt/Mainz are incredibly oblivious drivers. When I moved here last year I was astonished by the massive amount of middle lane hoggers. The A5 and A3 are particularly bad. It's a massive problem 'round here and I've unfortunately adapted to this situation by just passing on the right. Police presence on German roads is very low and getting pulled over is something that is very rare, even more so for lane hogging.
      Now for the speed limit:
      Lots of sections on the Autobahn do have an actual, fixed speed limit (usually 120 km/h (75mph) or 100 km/h (62mph)). On unrestricted sections there's a so-called "advisory speed limit" of 130 km/h (81mph). If you go above 130 km/h you may be held liable for any accident you're involved in, no matter if you've caused it or not. That's why it's officially recommended to not drive any faster, although you have every right to drive as fast as you want as long as you don't cause any harm to other drivers. Some sections may also impose a temporary speed limit depending on traffic, accidents, construction work, or road conditions.
      Regarding economics:
      The faster you go, the more fuel you'll burn. Gas is around 5.35$/gal in Germany right now. If it weren't for the Corona virus you'd be looking at 6-7$/gal. Owning a car is expensive as it is, owning a car that gets less than 20mpg is people with good money territory. Sure, I can drive from Frankfurt to Berlin in 4 hours (~6h @ 81mph) but it'll cost me at least twice as much in fuel alone, not to mention the increased fatigue of driving so fast for so long. At that point, taking a train or airplane is more cost-effective and more comfortable. Therefore, it is simply not feasible for the average German to just floor it everywhere.

    Wow, US laws seem so incredibly different.
    For one the passing rules on the highway in the UK are are strictly stay left unless overtaking. All of the other lanes are overtaking lanes. Loads of people don't always follow this, but Police are clamping down this a lot more.
    The speed limits are enforced with cameras (sometimes average speed cameras), there's no "slow poke" law and if the flow of traffic exceeds the limit. You're expected not to exceed it yourself, you'll still get a speeding fine if you do.
    There's no mandated distance for signalling. You're trained to use the signal "to benefit those around you". So that could shorter, longer or not at all depending on the situation.
    Stop signs work the same but, police don't monitor or enforce them and they are much rarer here.

    • @TimpBizkit
      @TimpBizkit ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Usually stop signs are place in junctions with such poor visibility that you'd be an idiot not to. The rest of junctions have "give way" where you can see the traffic on the road you want to join from far away so determine whether you need to stop or not.

      Still needs some work. The far right lane is the cruising lane. That's where you should be if you're not overtaking anyone. If you want to overtake someone, you move over one lane and then go back to the right. On a 3-lane highway, the innermost lane is just there to pass people on the middle lane, where you then move back over to the middle lane if there is no one to overtake there.
      Simply put: drive as far to the right as possible but never overtake on the right.
      ^ this is the very simple reason why German highways are far safer than US highways.

      Speaking for my area at least. Most highways are 3 lanes except for very very busy areas, the exit lane basically is added as needed for exits and then goes away because nature. Secondly, due to the congestion having the lanes come in and out causes, there is effectively no lane differences during busy times. The far right is still considered slow and if the exit lane exists at the time it's used as an exit, but the fast lane and passing lane are too congested to be anything other than extra slow lanes. Even at less busy times, because the exit lane comes and goes and we have a lot of tractor trailer traffic and curves and such, the only rule that can be followed is the slow lane, as the fast lane has to be used as a passing lane for the slow and there is too much congestion in the fast lane for people in the passing lane to actually get back over without endangering people.

  • @bbuny10

    The worst part of the passing lane is that when you put your signal on, intending to get back into the fast lane

    "If people signal 200 feet early in local traffic it'll cause so much chaos."
    200 feet at 30mph is 4.5 seconds. How is that going to cause chaos? That gives everyone around them time to realize they're turning, watch for their brake lights to indicate they've reached their intersection, and react accordingly.
    "45-50 feet is fine, as long as they don't do that one signal and swoop in."
    50 feet at 30mph is 1.125 seconds. Most turn signals blink at a rate *_around_* twice per second (with variations depending on manufacturer). If they turn their signal on 50 feet before their turn at standard traffic speeds, they're pretty much bound to one or two blinks before making a move.
    I think the problem here isn't people signaling too early, I think the problem is that people by and large don't understand how much ground they're covering at any given time, and they're really bad at estimating distances.
    Go ask any person how long they think the stripes and gaps are on the street. I guarantee they'll give you the wrong answer. Most people (according to a study conducted by Ohio State University) will answer two feet on average. They're ten feet long, with a thirty foot gap between them, according to federal road safety mandates.
    You very likely already signal between 100 and 200 feet ahead of time without even realizing it, because humans *_SUCK_* at judging distances at speeds our bodies would never reach on their own on level ground.
    Edit: Since apparently people can’t figure this out on their own: *YES, EXCEPTIONS DO APPLY. BUT THEY ARE NOT THE NORM*

      Bruh. If you have driven in NYC and in the tristate area, the length of a given street to turn on is sometimes less than 100 ft. And the speed limit is 25mph in NYC and in some areas 15-20 mph. So imagine signaling for 200ft when you’ve passed about 2 streets before turning in the street that you have to go in. Which Bladed literally explains in the vid.

      the driving rules in my country are that you signal 50M before the corner you are turning.
      50M is very very short when you are driving, so i imagine 200ft is roughly the same distance.
      and its fine.
      you guys see 200ft and think you have to start braking 10 weeks before you get in your car. morons.

In local traffic its typically 50 feet OR if two turns are very close i will signal as im passing the turn right before my turn.

    I drive in Arizona, and most of our roads are a grid, so it's easy to see far down the street when you come up to a stop sign, in both directions. If I slowly roll up to a stop sign and see no one coming for like a mile, then I just go, not having stopped completely. I understand I need to stop completely but when I do stop, sometimes a giant line of cars appear outta nowhere and now I have to wait like 2 extra minutes for them to pass.

    They should really enforce the passing lane rule in driving school and start giving out tickets for that. Imagine if there's an emergency and there's a firetruck, an ambulance, or a police car. They need to get somewhere as fast as possible so they are the only ones allowed to hog the passing lane, bc they need to pass everyone to get to that emergency.
