Toyota Fortuner 2020 review: Crusade off-road

  • When I first reviewed the Toyota Fortuner - way back in 2016 when it was launched here - I thought it was pretty good: a solid, if unspectacular, seven-seat 4WD. For a ute-based wagon it wasn’t a game-changer, but it was a decent effort.
    Since then, Toyota’s given the Fortuner a few slap-and-tickles along the way - including safety upgrades (with AEB) this year - and that’s all been an attempt to keep it relevant, but the Fortuner has never really sold as well as Toyota has hoped it would.
    Now, three years down the track - which can be a lifetime in the automotive world - the big question is: Is the Fortuner worth buying? I drove the top-of-the-range Fortuner Crusade to find out.

    Excellent and honest review. In fact the Fortuner is for people who cannot afford a Landcruiser but want Toyota quality. The car does the job and that's the most important thing. In Africa and Asia it is very popular.

    There probably aren't too many compelling reasons for buying one of these in Australia. But they're ubiquitous in Vietnam - manual gearbox diesel 4-bangers. I was driven in one hundreds of km up and down the country. Anything less would be beaten to death on the poor roads.

    Toyota offers “PEACE OF MIND”. No problem even the warranty ends. If it breaks something, its only minor and can be fixed easily. Others offers more features and power, right, but it is an endless money pit. And i found it satisfying without those features-ready for toyotas, coz u can handpick and customize those with your choice. And still gets a reliable car . Don’t get fooled with power that u don’t need and those features that you gonna replace soon when it gets outdated.

      @@carsguide The top of the range Fortuna is about the same as a GX Prado. That would make me check out both very carefully. Not into high tech stuff and bangs and whistles. The base Prado might be the better option if you actually want to go off road. I like base models. You can muck about with them more.

    We bought a 2019 GXL (updated model) and have no complaints. If i'm being picky it doesn't have much of a top end but from a stand still it takes off not sure what this blokes on about. Compared to Pajero, Trail blazer and Mux the interior is only 2nd to Everest which is another 8k more on each variant .No 7 seater is built to carry 40yr old adults in the 3rd row. 3rd row folding would have been nice but we fit the shopping even with the seats up and plan to remove them for propper trips anyway. We get 10.5l per 100 with ARB bullbar Steps and scrub bars. Couldn't recommend a better small SUV,

    I've had a GX Forty now for 4 years / 140,000km. A big issue with the car you tested is that you went with the Crusade version.
    There is little to no practical and usable feature differentiation between the GX, GXL and Crusade levels of trim. Just as when I did my shopping, it makes more sense to save money on the purchase and use the saving to perform the customary post acquisition upgrades. (2" lift, airbags and bullbar).
    In 2019 (almost 2020) not having Android Auto or the Apple equivalent is just nonsensical. The standard Toyota ICE is awful.
    The 3rd row seats were out of my Forty within 20 minutes of getting it home from the dealer and have never been fitted since.
    Sadly, Toyota doesn't sell a manual Forty anymore, as that is definitely a requirement to get the most of the 2.8

    • @carsguide
      @carsguide  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great question: it's fine on firmer sand, as you say, and is also effective on softer stuff, as long as the driver judiciously uses high-range 4WD (and low-range here and there) and lowers tyre pressures to suit. If you're driving the Fortuner up and down sand dunes, beware bellying out on the crests, although no more than any other similarly sized 4WD wagon as its ramp-over angle (23.5) is better than a few of its rivals, such as Prado, Pajero Sport and Everest. After the run I have had with other makes I would happily take an unspectacular car (spectacular seemingly related to gadgets) that might just do the distance, especially off road. I note that capability didn't get bagged to much. It is interesting how reviewers also bag the third row seat position (folded they actually rob a very minor amount of rear vision so that was a strange comment); there is some major advantages in dropping the loading lip when compared to others such as the Prado, Pajero Sport etc etc which drop the third row seats into the floor) - have they actually really thought about using the space to best advantage in situations other than suburban kid shuffling.

    • @carsguide
      @carsguide  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You make some good points, mate, but I disagree with you on your rear-visibility comment. Also, I can't speak on behalf of other reviewers, but I look at a vehicle load space in terms of real-world use, so fitting in people, bags, pets, camping gear etc not "suburban kid shuffling". When we talk about Toyota's it's about the brand, it's not about a particular product. Because people don't buy Toyota's as a product but buy as a brand. Lot of features and gizmos might be missing in their products but the brand's reliability gets over all these and even other brand's products offer's a lot of goodies, the sales excels only because of the brand.

    Its base on pick-up and called PPV. Its can't compare Land cruiser because its another level. Its this base product in 2015 model and little minor change 2019 (more change was rear drum break to dise break).
    Third row seat its very bad with people who tall more than 165cm. All seat uncomfortable and its don't change. Its height load and hard keep seat3row to side. And in real life its can't ran offroad, wet offroad.
    It ran 10-13 km/lite in eco mode.(less than 2000 rpm)
    And i own one. Engine in power mode is good but not best but it less than 10 km/lite i very sure.

      English Talkies The same situation also happens in Malaysia, Pakistan, Philippines, and Vietnam. It is also the best selling SUV in the Philippines, only beating the Everest/Endeavour in terms of sales, due to the Toyota badge. The only problem is that it doesn't even have a reverse parking camera, even on its top-end 4x4 2.8 V, but with its 2020 update, it now gets Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

      The same goes for here in South Africa where people love it over anything else in its class. They sell about a 1000 a month in our market which, for Jan to Aug 2019, was the third highest of all vehicles sold. Probably not the best vehicle out there but very capable. However, in SA, people do historically love Toyota.
