2023 Toyota Fortuner review: Crusade | Why the Ford Everest and Isuzu MU-X rival is just too old

  • Pick a Toyota model and chances are its the best-seller in its respective segment in Australia. But that's not the case with the 2023 Toyota Fortuner 4x4 large SUV. Despite being based on the all-conquering Toyota HiLux 4WD ute, it has never found the same level of success or close to it.
With the Ford Everest, Isuzu MU-X and Mitsubishi Pajero Sport firmly in its sights, the Fortuner is yet to catch fire Down Under, even with seven-seat practicality on offer as part of its off-road-ready body-on-frame package.
So, in this expert review, CarsGuide Contributing Journalist Emily Agar gets behind the wheel of the Fortuner's flagship Crusade variant to find out if family buyers should be embracing it more. After all, not everyone wants or needs its more expensive Toyota LandCruiser Prado sibling.

We love our 22 model GXL Fortuner, don’t care its media screen is smaller than rivals. I like it that way and less tech means less to go wrong out bush.

Owning a pre-FL Fortuner, shes highlights the negatives well. Main reasons I like the Fortuner is its faster than a heavier Prado and brilliant offroad

Quickers and lighter than the prado and looks-wise IMO the fortuner has a more aggresive and sportier look than its sibling. But the prado also has its own advantages over this.

This car is a fabulous car and the reason why that this vehicle is performing bad in the dealerships is because of the poor effort toyota puts in this vehicle. If toyota were to do that and then this vehicle would be performing way better in dealership. I hope toyota doesnt discontinue this😰

Wow 6.5 out of 10 that’s pretty low. I have a 2018 model crusade and I still love it , it’s not the best car in the world but for the price it’s pretty good I picked mine up for $58K drive away on special and it goes to many places a lot cars won’t go and I would give 8 out of 10.

@@davidbaker5185 But with a LOT of effort. There is an oblique bolt that is practically impossible to get out. I had intentions of removing the seats in mine but gave up because it was just too much effort. Why they ever went away from the similarly styled LandCruiser rear seats that could just be lifted out is anyone's guess. Swapped mine (2022 model) for a new Everest and that's why she gave it 6.5 out of 10. Any higher and the Everest would need to be rated at more than 10 out of 10. Cross shop this with an Everest and you'll need to be a rusted on Toyota buyer to get one of these. Oh, and that DPF warning that comes on every 200kms or so.
      No thanks Toyota!
