  • How to make a birdhouse on a wood lathe. I show you the steps involved in making a wood turned birdhouse. From 1" thick oak lumber to birdhouses that sell very well at craft shows, I show you all of the steps!

    Hi Mike. Me again. Thanks for all of your great videos! I wasn't sure how you mounted the birdhouse to a pole so I devised a method for the ones I am making. I use my router table and keyhole bit to put a keyhole mounting slot into one end of the mounting block and then screw the other end of the block to the birdhouse body through the opening. That way the owner can easily mount the birdhouse to their post by driving a screw into it. And it makes it easy from them to remove it for the winter if they want to (I'm in the cold north of PA).

      Hey Lee! Great to hear from you again! I drive a 1/4"x6" lag screw straight through the opening through a mounting block and into the post. With a driver it takes 30 seconds to hang it. It is actually the way I display them at the shows I do. When someone wants to buy one I take out the driver and just undo it. That way they can see the operation. By the way, thanks for the heads up on how to make a removeable top! I am doing a video now on a Screech Owl house I have made. It is pretty cool! 41" from bottom finial to top finial and 18" across the rim.

    Beautiful bird houses Mike. I have never tried glueing up staves but your birdhouses have given me the inspiration to try some.

    Please show how you mount those, or different variations for mounting.

      I am working on a new video now for my next generation. I will show how I mount the houses. Thanks for watching!

    Those are amazing, so much detail and craftsmanship. Question on how you cut the middle. Do you cut the slats on a table saw or do you use a router? I have not seen the other videos yet, but saw Glenn Teagle use a router to make the slats.

    Very nice, I love them. Do you have a video somewhere that talks about the angles needed to make the body of the birdhouse? I have never done this before so it would be nice to have a starting point. Thanks

      I do not have one that talks in depth about that. I can include that in a future video. I have two other birdhouse videos already recorded, so it won't be in those. I can tell you though that I used 12 staves in the body. That is 30degrees per stave, so 15 degrees per cut. Thanks for the kind words and watching!

      @@BrailsfordWoodworks Thank you for that information. Are you using 3/4 wood and then doing the 15 degrees on that?

    • @BrailsfordWoodworks
      @BrailsfordWoodworks  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@dkheaton It is 1" wood that I then plane. I take it to what ever it cleanly cuts to. Usually a little over 3/4".

      @@BrailsfordWoodworks Thank you so much. I am new at this and am trying to understand how the angle (15 degrees), the thickness of the wood, and the width all play together. Is there a chart somewhere? How did you figure this all out? Thank you for sharing your knowledge.

    What type of paint do you use on your Birdhouses. I love all the different colors

    • @BrailsfordWoodworks

      Most are a gel stain called "Unicorn Spit". I also have used Folkart Ultra Dye. Unfortunately they are not making that anymore. Thanks for the kind words!

      Thank you! I have a block that get sandwiched between the house and the post. I have a hole that goes through the back of the house directly adjacent to the hole. I then drive a 1/4"x6" lag bolt through the hole in the house and the block. I will be doing a new video and I will show how they mount.
