- Riding motorcycles can be complex. That's why all serious riders always say they're learning. But where does the learning start? What's the most essential thing of all? Shumi's been teaching for over 14 years at India's oldest riding school - Indimotard's TWO School - and here's his quick discussion on the most essential riding skill of all.

This. I only recently started commuting on my bike to office and I find being patient and calm the most important thing. It doesn't matter if I get there 5 mins late, just that I get there.
@@shu_mar make a podcast on "how to ride on highways"?
Being an Indian/in India one skill we all riders get is our active vision is so wide and good that we quickly avoid any unwanted things like autos, pedestrians crossing everywhere lol
Exactly 😂🤣🤣🤣 💯
The most loved part of podcast series is to learn from Shumi 😍❤️❤️
Cheers! Good morning to you too!

@@powerdriftofficial what are the best tyres now in India (other tyres aren't getting) for different purposes
This was taught to me by Shumi on day 1 of TWO. This stuck with me. The motorcycle always goes where you look. I realized that the body implicitly aligns almost instantly into the right posture conducive for the bike to move in the direction you look. I am also realizing that my bike does exactly what I think it should do…. And this forces me to keep my mind clear when I ride.
This is a lovely episode. More riding skills videos please.

When Shumi is your instructor nobody wants to miss the class. Whatever the subject is I just want to listen.
Amen, amen!
Okay! Microbiology and sociology content coming soon! 😂
This is exactly how a lecture should be... Straight to point , no shitty jokes , just pure knowledge without wasting any time!!💯💯🔥 Even experienced proffessors who have spend there whole life teaching others sadly do not know how to do this..... Shumi rocks🤩🌟
Thanks Chinmay!
Shumi : “watching the cliff for too long you could miss the turn”
My brain: Watching beautiful pedestrians for too long and not slowing down for speed bump/pothole
😄
The most important skill I have learnt after two falls is to look out for three wheeler autorickshaws, which change lane without indicators or looking at rear view mirrors 🙄.
This is a good one. Hey Shumi, please do make a podcast on how to alleviate riding fears after undergoing a surgery due to bike accident. I'm going through this phase right now and would love to get back to riding again without fear.
I had an accident some years back
Took me a while to get back on the road.
Never did anything consciously, but nw looking back, i think i did the right thing.
Frst and foremost, i took it slow.
I started with my father taking me in a car on small rides. I jus wanted to gt cmfrtble being on the road. Initialy jus looking at bikers taking those turns and cuts used to scare me.
But i got cmfy in 3 to 4 days. Then i asked him to take me on his bike. I had to get cmfrtble being on two wheels. After abt a week i started with cycling. I wanted to be okay with carrying my weight on smething light and flickable.
Suddenly after abt a week again, it jus felt okay to get on my bike. I jus stepped on it and rode it out. Jus circled my colony a couple of times. And it just clicked.
Nw m assuming u wrote abt the mental block that cmes after an accident and a surgery. As far as the physical strain is concerned, the health professionals know better.
Take ur tym sis. These things do test you in so many ways. Do not rush. Let ur body and mind dictate hw they want to proceed. You are willing to get back, that is great in itself.
Hope you get back soon. Tc.
This already exists! Just see the what to do after an accident episode
Thanks @roadquesttv. Like you said, taking it slow is the way.

Hey Shumi, Was waiting for this sort of a series, like many people I learnt riding in the lockdown thanks to WFH. Currently, I belong to the cohort of riders who are very less confident about their riding skill. Every time I ride I feel like there's an accident around the corner waiting to happen. Would love to see here the lessons you cover at TWO. You can make this series members only one, but please continue this series for god's sake.
Thanks! Noted! Watching videos and practicing skills isn’t the same though. I highly recommend you and friends make the time to come to indimotard.com/two
@@shu_mar Would definitely consider it when I go back to the city.
Well said. Vision is the most underrated skill that motorcyclists do not look at (pun unintended). The motorcycle will go where the eyes look. Its surprisingly effective. Irrespective of whether its a smooth ghat road or a gnarly offroad trail. Au contraire, if you look at the rock, you will hit the rock.
Haha!
That’s it! 😄
Great content Shumi, such key points are very important for enjoying motorcycling and ensure safety of riders.
Thank you!
I think it was a very valuable advise by Shumi. 👍🏼 will help inexperienced riders a lot
We sure hope so!

The art of leaning into a corner and exiting it safely. Want this 😭
I think counter steering should be next topic. In last 6 years I have never physically meet a guy, who knows that bikes counter steer.
-My small story
I started riding for tutions or college in 2007 on family and friends bikes but bought my own in 2016 and actually started riding. My only accident ever was in just 3rd month of buying bike, it's because I panicked and steer instead of counter steer in corner. And then I actually learnt riding. And again after that I have still not physically met a person who knows about counter steering. People fight and argue with me. I am talking about people with decades of riding experience.
P.S.: I don't have any pro-rider friends. Solo rider.
Idea noted!
Very useful and very important for bikers, even scooter and splendor guys should follow this.
Yep, this can help everyone!
I would really like to learn motorcycle off roading and adv riding skills.
The best place would be to go to an off-roading school. One of them is the Great Trail Adventure. Check this out : th-cam.com/video/N5frwdbBD7g/w-d-xo.html

Loved the podcast! Maybe discuss the potential race tracks we can go practise on if we're starting out? Starting with major cities and maybe a few honourable mentions of others. Thanks ❤️❤️
Any track you can find is a great starting place! ANY!
Solid Advice!
Attended a TVS L1 course and immediately noticed improvements in my eyes tracking the road ahead and looking at corners in a much better way.
Another great point is " wow i am going fast ", i have noticed that my "comfortable speed" on the road ( same road, same time) varies on day to day basis, its important to be mindful about that.
Thanks for great tips :)
Track time, especially under the right guidance, always helps!
You should really think of including graphics/animations during such explanation
Best thing about Shumi is that he doesn't even show himself riding in these videos and still makes his point with so much clarity..
I can visualise everything so smoothly..
Obviously credit goes to the script writer as well..

This is something I learnt to drive better and for spirited runs. New drivers and riders are unaware of this while more experienced people, say your parents, do it subconsciously. it's great for regular driving and riding too. Also for people who are learning, a running commentary is something that helps a lot.
Now we hope you'll be safer! :)
Yes! Talking to yourself can channel your focus and help assimilate skills

Request to consider for next one - Riding during covid (what are the latest rules/laws to consider riding during covid, are group rides a good idea during these times or go solo ?
Masks in helmet or no masks etc.)
We would suggest staying at home, unless it's absolutely necessary.
Avoid leisure travel. Say you have an accident and need to be admitted into a hospital. Now, medical resources need to be allocated to you. The resources which could have helped one more covid stricken patient.
Also, mask in helmet. No two ways about it.

I always had the desire of riding for long distance on my own bike.. But never owned one. On my first ride with my friends(they have been riding for a while) to Lavasa, after I bought my DOMI 250 I was taken aback by the corner speed they were carrying on the twisties... I was afraid and had to brake hard once... But this skill was the first thing I tried and I was so happy that it came out perfectly.... Today Shumi talking about this is a validation and a tiny moment of pride for me who is still a very novice rider.
There is no doubt we enjoy content like this, Shumi!
So glad to hear that! Stay tuned for more!
Thank you!
Please keep continuing this podcast. It's very informative tutorial for young riders and correction for old riders too.
Loved this information! It'd be great if you could do more videos on riding tips!
This was really good. I learnt about this crucial skill a while back applied it to off-road trails and it works like a charm. Helps me dodge bigger stones and potholes easily. Since you are on the subject of crucial riding skills, I'd like a video on highway riding positions, as in which position would be most safest position to be in while riding on say, single lane roads, two lane roads, four lane roads, and six lane roads.
Riding position as in body? Or as in where to place the bike on the road?
@@shu_mar Riding position as in where to place the bike.
In India, majority of the public use two wheeler as mode of transportation, which also contributes to the major chunk of road accidents. Unlike for cars, we don't see any formal training to ride motorcycles. This video surely helps in that sense and I request you to do more such educative videos!!
A great initiative.. kindly do continue PD. 🙏
Thanks PD And shumi , this is important for sure I ll try to implement it more

@ 6:41 that's Really True Shumi....
When I was adapting to my new bike I felt the "I'm going fast" feel and then I crashed and I learnt from it ...
The next time I got that feeling I slowed down even though I've done more faster and more aggressive manuvering....
Always guessed that my brain is distracted or my mind was somewhere else, so I go slow untill my mind is full on the ride
This Video gave me some closure
Thanks 🔥🔥🔥🔥
that's a major and most important riding skill. Thanks, Shumar.
In my earlier days of learning to ride a motorcycle, I used to see a pothole in front of me and always tried to avoid it by seeing it constantly, and always used to put my bike in potholes bending 2-3 rim spokes.😅😂😂
Glad you worked your way out of it!
Day 28 of asking PowerDrift to bring Holy Shift Season 2.
Do make a video on riding on Indian roads at night and how to avoid sudden potholes or by passers. Cheers.
Can do! Potholes aren’t sudden though. They don’t move around. Which means that you didn’t see them in time…
Topic suggestions:
1. rev matching while down shifting
2. Is clutchless shifting safe for the motorcycle and should we do it?
Very helpful.keep going

I am yet to buy my 1st bike.
This data is priceless for me.
My wife has assured me that if I land up in a hospital Becos of motorcycle accidents during Covid time, and if she has to leave the kids at home Inorder to look after me in the hospital then she will surely divorce me.
Gotta love that woman, her priorities are rock solid.
Haha! She's got a point! Make sure you are safe!
Yes I joined a lot......some things new to learn.....great start......carry on.....
Thanks
Very crucial point about getting used to speed.. folks nowadays jumping from 100 cc to fast bikes and hit 100 in a jiffy without realising it's too fast as its almost double of thier avg speed of 50-60 in smaller capacity bikes.. training gradually and getting used to speed is key... It's not how fast the bike can go it's how fast you can 👍
Great point!
