thats a shame. They really do have some really underrated songs that dont get any air time. The same with bands like Boston, Toto, Chicago, Europe and other bands of that era etc etc. everyone knows two or three major hits from these bands because they always get played on the radio but their entire back catalogues spans about 7-10+ albums. Not that every album release is an absolute banger (its impossible to have the same level of success across so many albums...) but they do contain good tracks that are rarely played on radio. The same with a band like Queen.15 studio albums and 10 live albums but out of 25 albums its always the same 10 songs or less that get constant air play. Some of their greatest tracks dont even get featured on their _'best of'_ albums
Man, I really love this song! Great job here Mark. Neil S. is SO tough to play! All you guitar players out there, pay attention to how little Mark's fingers move, that's the way to do it man, economy of motion! And excellent vibrato too! cheers bro
Shut up and play guitar, mark is great... that's said i definitely gotta say you have the most descriptive and Well explained solo lesson on this tune most everybody I know wings it decently with 16th notes and boy you clarify that with the triplets and played it to an almost exact T.!
@@kendesjarlais7577 if Neil Schonn's stuff doesn't seem tough to play, consider the phrase "standing on the shoulders of giants". There is one central reason why you've heard stuff so difficult that Schonn seems "not so tough": good sound recording and playback technology. Over the last century or so, we've been able to listen to studio performances whenever we want and as many times as we want. Music really started to grow in the 50s and high quality playback really started reaching the masses in the 60s and 70s. The insanely amazing musicians you hear now were inspired by the musicians of past decades - it really is an amazing time to be alive. Of course it still takes an exceptional musician to listen to recordings of great musicians for years and create great music with that background.
Wow, Just wow. I ran into a few of your Rush covers, and thought "This guy should be singing Journey covers!" And then I found this. Absolute perfection. Keep it up, all of you.
Nice lesson my friend.I just joined a cover band and have to learn a SXXTLOAD of songs in a hurry. This was extremely helpful. You just gained a subscriber
Awesome instruction and excellent playing! Nice face reactions. Thanks for tasking time to record and share this! Really helping allot of guitarist out here!!!
I actually can't understand the comments here saying the solo is incorrect! I found this version fascinating. As a guitarist in a band that recreates all of our covers to fit our style we all feel there are no "rules" other than the overall quality of the final product and what reactions we get from them at gigs. Very well done
This is a true performer. We see him here sitting at home or wherever but I have the feeling you get this guy on a stage with some room to move and he will deliver both musically and in presence
THE BOMB!! I just got back into Journey big-time, and your playing is just so sweet. I've been playing a long time and still I'd love to have you for an instructor. So good!
Mark, I'd say you are in a pretty good band :). Thanks for posting...I had to learn this song for a show this weekend and you provided the material just the way I prefer...Play it through first so folks can pick up 90% visually and then break it down in detail if the student wants the 10% detail. I decided to just use the opening phrase of the first solo and then do my own thing for the rest of that solo. Thanks!
seriously great tone! unbelievable singer!! if i saw a band covering Journey that well i certainly wouldn't worry about a note or 2. i've seen evrything on youtube concerning this lead and no 2 are the same. fact is, Neal is so supersonic fast no one but him can be sure. your version sounds excellent!
Monster! I like the drum track better than the original. Best Steve Perry cover I've heard. Period. Great guitar work! The riff beginning at 3:03 and lasting all of 3 seconds is the nut kicker.
Great job and playing the tone is awesome, I'm just working on this with my band. Just purchased a PRS Custom 24 and it sustains somewhat like the Gibson.
Dog gone Dude..Your like, playing this song so Calmly and relaxed ! Heck when I hear this Tune ,it gets me Rowdy as a Mad Man (This is such an Awesome song to play Air-Guitar too) . while I'm singing It !
This is exactly the kind of lesson I'm looking for. If you're looking to play this song, you should at least be a reasonably experienced guitarist and not need someone to say "put your finger on the third string, fifth fret here." I can figure a lot of stuff out by ear, and some visual cues REALLY help me out.
Great stuff Mark. It would be interesting for those of us out there (myself included) who own the Waves plug-ins to actually see how you use the various plugs on the mix and how this effects the overall sound AND the guitar sound. Might be interesting to do a kind of a/b comparison between no plug ins at all, and with the plug ins activated. Cheers.
Keep practicing Mark, you'll get it. Been a fan of your videos for a long time. Made the devil horns in front of the Mac many a time in front of the Mac in my box in Afghanistan. Keep killin it bro.
I almost got a set of those Suhr, but decided on a set of Lollar high wind imperials and still wonder about those, but if I got those I'd be wondering about these.. go figure!! Either way, they sound GREAT and I am also very happy with these Lollar's and would STRONGLY recommend them to ANYONE....
AWESOME!! Thanks for the post! I WISH I COVERED "ANYWAY" This well!! LOL I will definitely use your instructions!! Don't let all these You tube "EXPERTS" bad comments get to you. Awesome video, awesome quality and GREAT info! Thanks a TON!! JIM
Nice. I'm always amazed by how infectious Journey songs are... I don't own ANY of them but I do enjoy a rockin journey toon :) And by the way if your drummer holds out long enough he could find himself the new lead singer of Journey (amazing voice). Thanks for sharing :)
You are an talented and awesome guitarist!!! Great job on this cover. It inspires me to learn more, still in the learning stages. Just purchased an LTD (ESP) with single coil . Moving on up!! lol....nowhere near your caliber.
@Lamaza07 I'm now using a Kodak Playtouch. I use Logic Pro 9. In this video I went from the AxeFx into the Apogee Duet into my MacBook Pro (Logic Pro 9). I also use Waves plugins.
Nice job. I would disregard any comments about the solo being "incorrect." It might not have matched the recorded solo note-for-note, but I'm pretty sure Neal Schon doesn't play it the same way he recorded it 30 years ago either.
@samhillband Damn Mark, you are such a nice guy!!! Great attitude and by the way you play the best solo for this song in youtube so I give you 11/10. Great job!
About half way through i read the description and until then I thought this was the original and you just played over it. Your drummer should be your singer.
That sounds so Good You are amazing and your drummer is phenomenal at his vocal talents as well (I'd much rather listen to him do Steve Perry than Arnel any day!!!!!!!) Ever since this song came out I wondered if a normal guy could master the sound of Neal Schon and after all these years you have answered my question with a resounding Yes. Thank you so much for your video and best of luck to you and your band in all that you do.
Thanks Mark for sharing this. Impressive technique and tone. Vibrato is spot-on. Love your Vids. btw where did you purchase the shirt. I would like to buy
Just happend upon you guys video here. I had to listen a couple of times to this track to see if it really wasnt Steve Perry. Good on you guys for more or less reproducing quality music.
Yes better in current arnel pineda's vocal condition but in his prime , I don't think so . if u still has doubts then watch his earlier performances. Please I want to hear this guy's voice without much echo ,he sounds like Steve augeri with Perry's style of singing and add echo you'll end up a more powerful sound like Steve perry. In this current era where digital music is in its prime ,I'm not sure because this guys know more about digital music than I am, how will I know they didn't doctored his voice ,. I mean in this era where shitty singers become great singer in studio versions you can't really blame me. :-) don't call me hater because I really like this guy I just wanna clear my doubt.
First time I heard you guys practice you played Separate Ways...and this one. It was like a Journey concert for one! Now...where did I put my guitar?..
The singer is Killing It! Completely nailed it. Spot on all the way around.
As tough as it is to cover Schon's screaming licks and blazing speed, you did a good job!
as someone who is only familiar with journey's hits, i didn't realize what a shredder neil schon is- that solo is fast! great job
thats a shame. They really do have some really underrated songs that dont get any air time. The same with bands like Boston, Toto, Chicago, Europe and other bands of that era etc etc. everyone knows two or three major hits from these bands because they always get played on the radio but their entire back catalogues spans about 7-10+ albums. playing.....superb and on point to perfection. equipment....top notch and high end. facial expressions...priceless !!!!
Neil Schon needs to listen to this singer and consider him for Journey. I thought it was Perry until I read the comments.
+RKDriver Right, I said in the Separate Ways cover that he sounds horrifically like Steve Perry.
No doubt. Awesome vocals
i only realized cause i was like “it’s a little different here isn’t it?”
Man, I really love this song! Great job here Mark. Neil S. is SO tough to play! All you guitar players out there, pay attention to how little Mark's fingers move, that's the way to do it man, economy of motion! And excellent vibrato too! cheers bro
uhh bratta is tough to play, neil not so much
Shut up and play guitar, mark is great... that's said i definitely gotta say you have the most descriptive and Well explained solo lesson on this tune most everybody I know wings it decently with 16th notes and boy you clarify that with the triplets and played it to an almost exact T.!
shutup and move those little fingers 😋

Wow, Just wow.
I ran into a few of your Rush covers, and thought "This guy should be singing Journey covers!"
And then I found this.
Absolute perfection. Keep it up, all of you.
As ALWAYS exceptional and spot on my friend! Thank you for covering the greatest guitarist and band of ALL time Journey!!
Nice lesson my friend.I just joined a cover band and have to learn a SXXTLOAD of songs in a hurry. This was extremely helpful. You just gained a subscriber
I liked this purely for the facial expressions and lip singing. Guitar playing is great too.
Awesome band. Killer tune. Great playing.
Amazing! Simply amazing! Perfect cover! I've been playing guitar (on and off) for over 20 years. Very nice!
Awesome instruction and excellent playing! Nice face reactions. Thanks for tasking time to record and share this! Really helping allot of guitarist out here!!!
Love it Mark... awesome playing as always and the tone is just killer! Great info and lesson too! Thanks!
Great job! I'm digging your mini studio set up.... sounds like fun! You guys sound smooth..... I remember them days! cool.
I actually can't understand the comments here saying the solo is incorrect! I found this version fascinating. As a guitarist in a band that recreates all of our covers to fit our style we all feel there are no "rules" other than the overall quality of the final product and what reactions we get from them at gigs. Love your videos and love your guitar playing. Beautiful sound.
Dang - great job. One of the best covers of Perry's vocals I've ever heard, too.
that was so up so amazingly ass-kicking I can't even see straight
Mark,
Your videos are some of the best on TH-cam...

This is a true performer. We see him here sitting at home or wherever but I have the feeling you get this guy on a stage with some room to move and he will deliver both musically and in presence
most killer tone I've heard from a Les Paul in a looong time!! awesome cover as well!!
THAT is an insane cover for the song...and damn you nailed the solo. Saying this was amazing is an understatement. Good job!
Dang Mark, you're having too much fun. I would've quit my day job if I could play like that. And the singer/drummer - he makes me sick!
Fantastic! You make it look effortless.
Always brilliant. You make your solos and overall playing seem effortless... dang you... :-) Thanks Mark.... :-)
Super bon son, merci Mark pour les vidéos.
THE BOMB!! I just got back into Journey big-time, and your playing is just so sweet. I've been playing a long time and still I'd love to have you for an instructor. So good!

Thanks!!!

Thanks for the video. Recently I've been thinking about getting rid of my gear (no time to play anymore), but this has inspired me.
I really like the crunch you're getting out of that setup. Nice solo
seriously great tone! unbelievable singer!! if i saw a band covering Journey that well i certainly wouldn't worry about a note or 2. i've seen evrything on youtube concerning this lead and no 2 are the same. fact is, Neal is so supersonic fast no one but him can be sure. your version sounds excellent!

Monster! I like the drum track better than the original. Best Steve Perry cover I've heard. Period. Great guitar work! The riff beginning at 3:03 and lasting all of 3 seconds is the nut kicker.

I should re-do this, I play it all wrong here.
Clean as the paint on your door. Nice!
Great playing dude!!!
Nice job. I would disregard any comments about the solo being "incorrect." It might not have matched the recorded solo note-for-note, but I'm pretty sure Neal Schon doesn't play it the same way he recorded it 30 years ago either.
There are those who have talent and those who are just posers. You know who you are. Keep on keepin' on
@samhillband Damn Mark, you are such a nice guy!!! Great attitude and by the way you play the best solo for this song in youtube so I give you 11/10. Great job!

Nice playing , and Nice guitar by the way !!!!!!!! :)
About half way through i read the description and until then I thought this was the original and you just played over it. Your drummer should be your singer.
I watch this over and over.
If Alex Lifeson joined Journey, here it would be.
That sounds so Good You are amazing and your drummer is phenomenal at his vocal talents as well (I'd much rather listen to him do Steve Perry than Arnel any day!!!!!!!) Have you already done a demo of that D-tuner? Would be nice to see how well and accurately it works. Great video again.
bad ass cover damn your singer has an awesome vocal range and yes better than current journey singer.great playing by the way love your tone here.
Thanks for the one words Rick!!

i know this song from bingewatching the Simpsons :-D one of the episode featuring Rodney Dangerfield as mr burns' estranged son ^_^
The most important thing is that you got here and you now know this song.
First time I heard you guys practice you played Separate Ways...and this one. It was like a Journey concert for one! Now...where did I put my guitar?..
