    On the DVD set there is a short extra on how this was set up. The crew located a dead whale and dragged it out to sea to sink it, with weights IIRC. However, it did NOT go as planned as by then the whale had bloated so much it would not sink. So the crew had to resort to extreme measures to vent the gasses out, including poking holes in the carcass with sharp tools and shooting it with a pistol. (For those who are curious, the photos showed a S&W 645.) Needless to say it was a very unpleasant task.

    It's astounding that only a single whale carcass can become food for such a stunning array of life at the deepest depths of the ocean, and be a food source for such a long time. They essentially become hubs for an entire deep sea ecosystem for months or even years at a time. Now imagine what would happen if whales went extinct. Countless species of animals who live on the ocean floor, where food can be extremely scarce, would be robbed of what is potentially one of the most important food sources for them. How many absolutely ancient and incredible animals, like those hagfish, sharks, and worms, would subsequently die off as a result of that loss?

    Interesting, how is it that these deep sea scavengers are able to ingest such incredibly decomposed remains without suffering ill effects? I know that for terrestrial scavengers such as vultures, they've evolved to have incredibly potent stomach acid that neutralizes pathogens, but even that has limits.

    In the solemn depths of the sea, a whale’s lonely carcass lies. Its mouth gapes at the deep blackness surrounding it and its hollow eye sockets reflect the void they stare lifelessly into. This cadaver, once filled with color and vigor, is now as pale and lifeless as the slowly shifting sand it rests upon.
    Writhing over the sickly thing that was once a whale are a multitude of black eels. These shadowy, alien creatures twist and spin as if in agony, all to pry off the smallest piece of flesh with their jawless mouths. The sea is silent, but for the sound of the slow tearing of inanimate flesh.
    Other creatures, too, will not be denied their measure. Dark, blind sharks quietly glide over the whale’s remains until they happen upon gobbets of flesh weakly attached to the carcass, at which point they twist and writhe like every other nameless thing upon the whale to claim their grisly meals.
    Given time, nothing of the whale will remain but bones, picked clean.

    1:28: "deep sea scavengers will feast on the carcass for YEARS". 1:36: "18 months later, when we returned to this whale, all that was left was a perfect skeleton". Did they just manage to contradict themselves in the span of 10 seconds?

    • @jackcarter5101
      @jackcarter5101 6 ปีที่แล้ว +25
