Ustadji keeps things very simple, straight, unembellished with no surprises, no new phrases, no sawal-jawab, no new ang, no pyrotechnic, no compromise. The whole rendition is Yaman and pure Yaman, nothing added, like an unornamented, bucolic beauty. A content diya is lighted in the corner of your room, smiling.
In the late 60s we used to be tenants of Santosh Bannerjee in kolkata who was a disciple of Ustadji. His daughter now is an established sitar player. About that time, I became attracted first to his style of playing, though I had received training from an uncle of mine - the late Bimala Kanta Roy Chowdhury, disciple of Ustad Enayat Khan. Here his rendering of Yaman is like always just pure & beautiful, though bereft of ornamentation associated with sitar baj of the Imdadkhani style. It is, I suppose, very close to the dhrupad style of the Senia family. Another sitar player playing in Senia style & of whom I am very fond was late Bimal Mukherjee. He was at once a sitar player, a perfomer par excellence in addition to having been a top ranking member of Indian bureaucracy.
Pandit Santosh Banerjee was not a disciple of Ustad Mushtaq Ali Khan. He was a disciple of Ustad Dabir Khan of Senia Rampur gharana. He played sitar and surbahar in Senia Rampur gharana's Beenkaar style.
Ustad Mushtaq Ali Khan played a differently designed Sitar. His disciples included Debabrata Chowdhury (who deviated much from his Guru), Nirmal Guha Thakurta, Nitai Bose, Shasanka Bhattacharya, and his nephew Ishtiaq (?). Ustad lived on Ganguly Para Lane in Paikpara, Kolkata and as I have heard, he declined to teach a school boy, Nikhil Banerjee.
Excellent. 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻👍👌👌
