Yet a man who claims to have achieved Wharton MBA hasn’t a clue about how tariffs work? Either that man has misrepresented his qualification, or he should sue Wharton for repayment of fees.
In my high school they taught that tariffs can be useful but not in these circumstances. The price to make something domestically has to be close to the import price. Then a tariff can help support domestic business.
No, no, no! Not an MBA - a plain old Wharton *_undergrad_* degree. I taught Wharton undergrads while I was in the Ph.D. program; there were a few standouts, but most of them were pretty unimpressive.

Not only have tariffs been nisunderstood but the effect of replacing workers with machines has: Employees pay income tax. Machine don't. If machines are taxed as the employees they replace but do not save the employer money then why switch to machines? The government loses the tax paid by an employee when he is replaced by a machine. The solution is to tax ownership of such machines on an ongoing basis. Another way is to insist machines can only be leased, and tax the lease on a monthly basis. Unless the Government does this the tax revenue will go down while the need to fund unemployment goes up. If you disagree with this scenario, what do you see as an alternative, please?
Not a disagreement per se but I'm concerned with the specifics and how to regulate the language in what counts as a machine. I feel like there can be a runaway reaction where someone will make (although stupid) an assertion that an AC unit should be taxed etc etc. Perhaps a clause somewhere about it being a primary enabler of production or if it can be reasonably be replaced by human hands. Lots of intricacies here unfortunately.
@@Covfefe_JellyYou bring up many nuances of “taxing machines” and I could see how that would end up being a very tricky scenario. I doubt that the government would tax machines because the auto industry has become so robotic and I doubt that they’re paying taxes for the robots. Also no social security investments. This is a conundrum for workers in the UAW and I just hope they have have protections while technology overtakes their jobs.
Trump’s America is where the undereducated will have jobs based on loyalty and everyone else will be cheap labor, relaxed child labor laws will contribute to that. Remember he’s going to cut Dept of Education and much more so what technology will do the labor? None, America will go back in time. I work for a company that makes hardwood veneer and I don't know all the details, but I remember several years ago our company was involved in a lawsuit against China. And it was my understanding that China was exporting a competing product at some crazy low cost. The way it was explained to us was that the Chinese government was basically subsidizing their veneer manufacturing by supplying them logs. Which would definitely explain the price discrepancy. In that instance a tariff would have fixed the problem. Except, I don't think it would. You see, our company won its lawsuit and China started shipping their products through other countries to avoid the counter measures.
Many times in the past tariffs were imposed on Chinese goods that were known to be Chinese government subsidized during its manufacturing process. Thus giving that particular product a competitive advantage. It became government versus government. The manufacturing of steel for instance
There is one situation where tariffs might actually be useful to a national economy, but it doesn't apply to the US. Its when you have a developing economy that needs to protect infant industry until they can stand on their own. Other than that, it will be harmful ultimately.
The main thing I was taught in high school about tariffs is the price will always go up. If there is not a big price differential it might be worth imposing a tariff but if the difference is large it will be punitive to the consumer. I was taught that the businesses typically pass on the increase in cost. I mean the goods I sold at work saw a price increase when Trump put the China tariffs in place during his first term.
You know who loved tarriffs? Adolph Hitler. He believed that Germany needed to be economically independent, so high tariffs would lead to higher prices on imports and thus boosting demand for domestic products. But the problem is that the REASON people buy from abroad is because the other country, for whatever reason, can produce the item more economically. This is the principle of relative advantage. For many reasons some countries can produce some goods more efficiently than others. So according to THAT theory we should encourage free trade so each country can produce what it is good at and import what they can get more efficiently elsewhere. There are a few cases in which tariffs do boost domestic prodction to the point that it can become economically more effective due to economies of scale, such as in early US development. But remember that the US had MASSIVE resources which they stole from the Native Americans and ABUNDANT cheap labor in the form of slavery and cheap immigrants, so it could take advantage of such a policy. Almost everyone else that did this has failed. For example, Mexico subsidized the Mexican automobile industry by placing high tarriffs on imported cars for decades (100pc in many cases), but the problem was that their internal market was just too small to reach effective conditions. So what it did was just make cars really, really expensive both for imports and domestically produced cars. Auto workers were happy, but that cost was being paid by other workers, farmers, and even bsiness owners who went bankrpt and had to be sbsidized by the government. The idea is popular only because people THINK that the tarriffs are punishing "other" people. But it is ore like cutting off one's nose to spite your enemy. Amazingly he talked about a 200pc tariff on TRACTORS at a forum for FARMERS. Those farmers KNOW they will be paying those higher prices and THEY DON'T CARE where the tractors are made. They want the cheapest tractors possible. Stupid, stupid, stupid.
Regarding early voting statistics, let's just remember all that was going on in 2020. It's no surprise that early voting for Dems is down this election compared to last. It would be a much better baseline to compare to 2016 imo.
Import tariffs can only increase prices for consumers. Where tariffs can help is with domestic manufacturing and tariffs can help the people who work in these industries keep their jobs.
Put simply: Trump is putting the cart before the horse with the tariffs. For many of the tariffed Chinese products, the US has no alternative. Alternatives first, tariffs later (if you want tariffs so bad). Trump seems to think the inverse: tariffs first and people will start offering alternatives. This may be true, but for that you need to go through years of high prices as the market adapts and shifts to offer the product.
Trumpists offered similar excuses when the Chinese counter tariffs affected American farmers. The staple crops being exported to China were no longer being sold, and people though "Oh, the farmers can just switch to another plant." As if it's as simple as Minecraft gardening?!?
3:38 - THAILAND for electronics? I think you meant to use TAIWAN in your example. THAILAND is a completely different country which is not known for its electronic industries 🤣🤣 What a brain fade by David.
Congratulations to David for realizing that his first statement concerning the early voters is counterbalanced by fact that more Trump voters are likely to vote earlier this time around, especially because Trump has urged them to do so. In the end the propositional changes he was concerned about don’t give a clue as to how the overall voting will actually go. Relax.
David....I thought you were smarter than this. You can't compare early voting during COVID with early voting post-COVID. Of course Biden had a larger lead.
Mark Cuban has been trying to explain this about Trump tariffs. Look up what he has to say about that and what he has to say about the Harris plan. Vote BLUE because we believe in respect and kindness towards all our neighbors
Great explanation of what Tariffs are. Even if a product is produced domestically like David said a US locally sourced product might be sourcing products from China and Tariffs will cause an increase of US products as well. MAGA doesn't understand this
There is a firearms company in California called FMK. Their G3 costs $329.99 then the Trump edition is $599.99. Crazy. Didn't Russia declare war on Japan before we could accept the surrender? It allowed them to be part of the peace talks without having ever actually fought Japan or something. It was like August when they declared war and September when Japan surrendered.
The more and more I see Biden and hear him talk, the more respect and admiration I have for him. I love his sense of humor, especially about himself, and the way he talks about America's greatness I grew up believing in. Are we perfect, of course not! But remember when there would be a national tragedy, weather, or terror, and the entire country would let go of the petty gripes and do whatever we could to help? I do, and that's the America I want us to get back to!
Question - Since the US is in the three-nation USMCA trade deal signed by Trump, can the US add tariffs to goods imported from Mexico? He did that to aluminum and steel coming from Canada when he was first President - and the retaliatory tariffs on American goods severely hurt US companies.
It's ALWAYS inflationary, just look at Brazil between 64 and even now (with a 60% import tax!). Local manufacturers will also tag their prices to whatever the end cost of a similar quality imported product will be.
Eric Adam was just indicted I just read,. I knew his inner circle was being investigated,. It was only a matter of time before he was caught up in it,.

So why doesn't beiden remove them?
No, no, no! Not an MBA - a plain old Wharton *_undergrad_* degree. I taught Wharton undergrads while I was in the Ph.D. program; there were a few standouts, but most of them were pretty unimpressive.
@@JAP42 who were the standouts?
Great show, David and your highlighting of Trump’s ridiculousness is always a pleasure to see.
This ludicrous character cannot return to the WH, but should definitely be returned to a quiet life fighting his many many egregious felonies.
Mr president Biden, you are a great president and a great human being. We thank you for your time in politics. You sir, served your country, very well. You are the best president in history.
I’m sure she said “uncharted” territory. A common mispronunciation” FOX of course.
Thank you Joe. You have done a good job and most of us Americans love you. ❤
President Joe Biden was our F.D.R in our time God bless him and his family.
Can u please make a video about what Harris and Biden has achieved economically in the last 3.5 year? Because almost EVERYONE is saying Harris has done nothing so far, which isn't true at all. Can you talk about Infrastructure bill, CHIPS Act, Inflation Reduction Act, lowest unemployment in dacades, historic high stock market, historic high oil production etc.
Thank you David Pakman!!
Tariffs on specific items or classes of items to raise the prices on the items coming in, just as you described.
Trump just doesn't get subtle actions- or ANYTHING about economics.
All I can say thank u president Biden I have voted for u. Thank u sir
David just wanted to say thank you for the Biden Vs Trump at the UN comparison. This is the type of discussion that is so important and hopefully eye opening for America voters. Trump was/is a joke to the rest of if the world, if only the Maga could see this.
🇺🇸🇺🇦❤🤍💙💛🌹🇮🇱🤍💙
Biden is everything that is great about this nation. 🇺🇸
Not only have tariffs been nisunderstood but the effect of replacing workers with machines has:
Employees pay income tax.
AGENDA 47 and PROJECT 2025 outline this and our country will be doomed with “ It sounds good” ideology ran by idiots, the laughing stock of the world as we become a 3rd world country.
So why hasn't Beiden taken off the tariffs???
@@krisstewart7926 because Trump left your country with a colossal DEBT. The way to reduce that debt is through higher taxes. You have got used to the increase caused by Trump so rather than removing Trump's Tariffs and increasing other taxes (and getting blamed for it) and because Trump supporters believe it is not a tax on consumers anyway, he very sensibly kept it. What would you have done?
Trump doesn't know 💩🤦♂️🤷♂️
David you’re analogy voting early in 2020 compared to now is way off base because we were still doing Covid . Mail in ballad were much more because people were still staying in
So much respect for President Biden.
Trump just wants to save himself.
Forget the polls we the people must all come out and vote blue 💙💙💙💙 up and down the ballot on November.
Grandpa Mitchell not a fan of
tariffs nor trump anymore
There is one situation where tariffs might actually be useful to a national economy, but it doesn't apply to the US. Its when you have a developing economy that needs to protect infant industry until they can stand on their own. Other than that, it will be harmful ultimately.
So farmers would pay more for John Deere tractors?
Keep up your great work
Thank you Mr. Joe Biden.
"...Trump put the China tariffs in place during his [only] term."
There, I fixed it for you.
Explain how someone who bankrupted MULTIPLE casinos is considered a financial genius. It's almost impossible to bankrupt even one.
Hoover tried using tariffs to stimulate the economy. It didn't end well.
It's called The Weave David haven't you heard of it yet LOL
/s
Import tariffs can only increase prices for consumers. Where tariffs can help is with domestic manufacturing and tariffs can help the people who work in these industries keep their jobs.
Pres. Joe Biden is a God-fearing person, it shows in his words. God bless America!

Do they really call you Sir, David? Or are you sarcastic?
Really ... You're asking if David is sarcastic ... Have you watched his show before?
He charged the secret service to stay at maralago and his hotels!!
Disgusting.they were protecting him and all he and his family think about is money!
I fact checked you Davud...Nasdaq and dow are down almost 0.8% today :(, but 10-30% ytd... where is my immediate dopamine hit?
Relax.
Will sending off my mail-in ballots dispel my anxiety about this election??
Ahhhh, watchin in replay sucks, where are my Paks??!!
Sumo oranges are the nectar-"ines" of the gods!!!
Tbf we alreadu have insane tariffs on china.
McLiar Poopypants
That would be dump
I'm voting in person on election day for Harris in deep red South Cackalack. 😅
David....I thought you were smarter than this. You can't compare early voting during COVID with early voting post-COVID. Of course Biden had a larger lead.
If China pays our tariffs, who pays China’s tariffs? Trump would probably say China pays both.
MAGA doesn't understand this
He knows that it will not help the US
Excellent lesson on tarrifs. Thank you, David. 💙🦋
October 8th I’m early voting for Democracy!
David, I disagree with your opinion on Haitian case without laying out the merits of this case. In my opinion, it has a strong civil case and perhaps criminal prosecution. I do pray it can lead to swift Justice for the sake of Haitian Americans. Be strong, we are with you guys!
The funny part is that some hard core conservatives will say it is rigged. Then they wait in line to vote. But if the fix is in and your vote is going to be changed why are you wasting time voting? Funny how they don't seem to have a coherent answer.
Mitch is still around! Holy cow, retire dude!
Greed is the motivating factor in why he hasn’t retired.
I can’t watch it
Open your eyes
She hasn't had all the time, Biden had back then.
PRESIDENT Biden, please. I can't make out what you're trying to say.
David, he loves that chart because it saved his life!😝
