hi there . I have a question for you. I bought this device from a friend today. But I couldn't install it. I couldn't find a setup for this product on Akai's website. Do you have any information?
I can't get any sound to come out. The midi controller shows up, it's ticked, and then when I record enable, nothing happens. I'd really appreciate help with this, I've watched so many videos and none of them help. My midi controller works fine in all my other DAW's Cubase and Ableton.
My pleasure, thank you for watching and supporting. If there’s anything else I can help you with or if you have any suggestions for future video, I would love to hear them. Subscribe!
So what about the Pro Tools Setup -> Peripherals -> Midi Controllers? What do I put there? The choice for controller type does not include Akai, only "None", "Command8", "HUI", "Surround Panner", "M-Audio Kbd", and "Komplete Kontrol." So how do I setup my Akai controller keyboard here? No one has said anything about this yet... Thank you for all your help to others, if you can help me figure out what I'm supposed to put in here, I'd really be very happy.
Hi! For these specific menus, it refers more so to a session controller. Like a presonus control surface and other devices of that sorts. I’ll be making more videos in the future covering these specific types of menus. I’ve been extremely busy the last year or so. I’ll be making TH-cam videos on a consistent basis again starting next month. My apologies!
thank you for sharing your knowledge! What if the synth button (other of massive) it doesn't have options with the right click. I can't assign the MPK knobs to the software. Synthcell is the virtual instrument that comes with the protools. thanks again!
Hi Toinethomassaen5116, I’m glad this video was helpful! Thank you for watching and supporting! Let me know if there’s anything you’d like to see in future videos. Thank you!
Hi, great question. I’ve only connected one and that’s the Ensoniq ASR10 that I have. I haven’t worked with it much digitally but what I’ve been able to do is use it as a MIDI keyboard by using the MIDI IN and OUT connections with an interface that has those same connections. As far as playing their sounds, I route the audio output to an input on a mixer or interface. Does this help? I think I’ll make a video covering this.
Good video all day... I'm trying to find out if if Akai Mpk supports HUI.. I recently upgraded to Protools Artist, and the M Audio Axiom worked fine with Protools 8 Le but not with the new Protools version. I want to purchase an Akai MPK but only if I can control my transport and faders
Hey! Thank you for watching and supporting! I had an Akai MPD32 that I was able to configure and control my transport and faders with so I’m sure an MPK can do it as well.
Great Video! Would love to see your peripheral controls. I have a windows laptop and an akai mpk mini. I just seem to get the setup right! Loved your video btw, you're a great teacher!
Hi Elosbyuri! My apologies for the late response. I’ve been very busy the past year and will be getting back to making TH-cam videos on a consistent basis starting next month. You can use midi mapping to assign the faders to the knobs.
Hey Dezavi, great video! I am a complete newbie with ProTools, could you please give me some directions on how to properly setup I/O to hear my MIDI Keystation MK3 in my headphones when using ProTools? Thank you very much
Hi Dezavi, thank you very much for your fast reply, I do appreciate it. I don’t use any Audio Interface yet as it is a plug-in and play midi controller, but maybe I should get one?
It’s okay, you don’t really need an interface if you’re not recording with a mic or instrument. First and foremost, make sure that the track you are using is record enabled and that the output is set to your main speakers/headphones. Also, in the drop down menus, go to “setup” and select “playback engine”. In there, make sure that in the device section, your have the proper selection for which you want to use.
Yeah, that’s what I’m trying to figure out:) It would be amazing if you could demonstrate how to properly setup midi controller ( IN ) using headphones (OUT) in Pro Tools, to be able hearing sound through the headphones.
hi Dezavi, thanks for Pro Tools MIDI Controllers Part 1 & P.2, very informative! Can you please post a video with the same set-up but using the knobs of the controller for volume & pan. I'm told it's easy using the controller in final mixes for panning, volume & EQ automation? Can you please help
It doesn’t have a driver. Use the “MPK Mini Editor” to configure the settings of the product. The download for the MPK Mini Editor is available on Akai’s website after you have registered the product.
@@DezaviProductionsHave the same question. I just bought the Donner DMK25 pro(similar to Akai). The only buttons that work for me are the keys of the keyboard. Hi Ariel thank you for watching! There is another way to setup your MIDI controller. It is a bit different. I will try my best to explain it here but will most likely make a new video for the explanation. Go to "Setup" in the menu and choose "Peripherals". In peripherals click on "MIDI Controllers". Where is says "TYPE" choose "M-Audio Keyboard". Where it says "Receive From" and "Send To" select your controller. Click OK at the bottom. Let me know if this helps, I'll be making a video for this thank you for your question and I'm glad you liked the video, please subscribe! I have more videos on the way.
@@DezaviProductions thanks! I just tried this but no luck. I tried “M-Audio” on type with no luck, but I also have the option “Komplete Kontrol” which is my midi pad however, the “receive from” and “send to” only show my audio interface and whatever option I choose, pro tools gives me an error saying to power cycle my pad and check connections. It’s strange because my midi pad works perfectly on the Maschine software. It might just not be compatible but thanks for the reply and I will subscribe! Pro tools is giving me headaches lol
I’m sorry the options didn’t work, I’ll do some research and see how that issue can be resolved! I don't know anything about midi but I need to learn since I bought avid carbon. Which midi controller (49 keys) should I buy which will connect easiest with pro tools 2021. Info will be much appreciated. Thanks
Congratulations on your Avid Carbon Interface 🎊! There are many brands out there but my personal favorite for ProTools is Akai. A 49 key controller they have is the MPK249. This one has a transport (Play, Stop, and Record button) that you can use to control ProTools. Other great brands are Alesis, Arturia, and M-Audio. Other brands such as Novation and Native Instruments are great too and are compatible but are typically paired with other software. You’ll find that many MIDI Controllers have settings that are mapped to use with all software and never have settings for ProTools. This is because ProTools isn’t typically used as much for beat making. Other software such as Fruity Loops and Ableton Live are much easier to get creative in than ProTools. I personally use Ableton Live to create beats and experiment with music. I use ProTools for all editing, mixing, and mastering. I use both. Ableton for creation and ProTools for perfection.
Hi, there are a few things to check. •Make sure that the track is record enabled and that you’re using an instrument track. •Make sure your outputs are corrects. •Make sure you have the MPK enabled from the MIDI Input Devices list. In the input devices list, it doesn’t say “emulated” next to the name of the MPK right?
Pro Tools shows my MPK mini, though it has "Emulated" in parenthasis. But there is no sound coming from it. I've followed several guides and just nothing happens...
Hi, I'm sorry to hear you're having issues connecting your controller. I've had several comments with the similar issue and I'm still unable to figure out why some are showing "Emulated". Do you use the Akai MPK MIni Editor software that came with controller after you registered online?
@@DezaviProductions I was running the software, then I closed it out, and nothing happened either way. Odd thing, it just started working about an hour or so after I made my post yesterday. I don't have a clue what I might have done to make it work, but, uh, problem solved, I guess... #shrug
That’s great to hear, I’m glad it’s working for you now. Yeah that’s very odd. If you have any questions or anything you’d like to see a video for please do let me know, thank you!
At the time of the release of this video, there wasn’t a default drum machine in ProTools that would allow you to use the drum pads. Now there’s Groove Cell. You can use Groove Cell from Avid. OR you could use Battery 4 by Native Instruments. It’s much easier and more flexible to work with in my opinion. The plug-in alone is $199. Another option is you could sign up for Native Instruments “Komplete Now” subscription. It’s $10 a month for the use of a bunch of plug-ins with awesome sounds and it includes Battery 4. I’m using them right now to make the next tutorial which is “How to make a beat in ProTools”. I’m not paid by Native Instruments by the way lol. I’m not trying to sell you anything. ProTools is not the best software to make beats in honestly. That’s why I’m making the new tutorial, to help those find the best way possible to make beats in ProTools. So if you’re interested in watching that video, it’ll be released here soon. Hope this helps.
Thankss a lot, I know that Pro Tools is not very good with rhythms, but I prefer it because it is the DAW with which I learned, in any case, what DAW would you recommend to make rhythms?
In my personal experiences, the best DAWs that help bring out your creativity without complications is Ableton Live and FL Studio. I first started making music in FL Studio. Then in started using ProTools, and then I learned how to use Ableton Live. Now I make my music in Ableton Live and do all the editing, mixing, and mastering in ProTools. I know a lot of people who have had great experiences with Logic Pro but I’ve never used it. I want to try it though. Don’t be discouraged to learn a new DAW. In the end they all do the same thing basically, it just depends on your work flow honestly. And who knows, you might end up liking one better than the other. It’ll also help you when you collaborate with others who use different DAWs as well.
Hello, I have the same AKAI MINI 3, I do all the steps but I get some things different. 1- MPK Mini 3 (Emulated) 2- inst 1 / plugin / instrument / Click II (Mono)... Thats the only option I get on the instrument tab :( Then nothing happens. I already updated the firmware for the Akai
Hi Alberto, I'm sorry to hear that you're having trouble with your MIDI controller. Did you download MPK Mini Editor for your controller? Also, it seems as though you have a "Click/Metronome" on your instrument track. It must be a virtual instrument that must be used in an insert of the instrument track. Virtual Instruments must be in the AAX format. Do you have any virtual instruments that you can use? Xpand2 is a popular default virtual instrument.
Yes lol. Make sure you follow all the setup instructions that came with your MPK Mini and that you register your controller with AKAI online. Also, I previously made a video on how to record virtual instruments. Here’s the link below: th-cam.com/video/x5lRmb8q-II/w-d-xo.html I hope this helps.
@@DezaviProductions thanks! 😅 si actually installed a bunch of things that came with it and then uninstalled others, I might have uninstalled basic ones also 🥴
Hi! It very well could be the problem. Couple things to trouble shoot. First check to make sure that “MIDI THRU” in the “OPTIONS” drop down menu is checked and enabled. Restart the software after if needed. If that doesn’t work, make sure your firmware for the MPK Mini is up to date. I’ve attached a link for the firmware update for the MPK MINI MK3. Follow the steps and let me know if this does or doesn’t fix the issue. www.akaipro.com/mpk-mini-mk3
I'm having some trouble connecting my motif 7 to pro tools...I downloaded the driver and the motif shows up as checked off in the set up-MIDI-input devices menu. However, I'm not getting any signal from it into my instrument track(using expand). I'm Using the Apollo x4. What am I missing?
Hi! I’m sorry to hear that! There was someone who had a similar issue with their device and they mentioned that using a mono track instead of a stereo track fixed the issue. Try creating a mono instrument track and see if that helps. Also, make sure your track is record enabled and that your outputs are correct as well. Let me know if this helps, we’ll figure it out 👍🏻
Thats great, but all I've got is a blank screen and none of the bits you have on. If I click add instrument nothing appears on said blank screen so there must be a step before this
Hi JCB, I'm sorry to hear that you're having difficulty. When you're referring to "bits", what is it exactly that you're referencing? Also, are you referring to add virtual instrument plugin, or add instrument track when referring to "add instrument"? Just want to clarify those things so that I can help!
@@DezaviProductions i don't have any of the windows that you already have up at the start of the video. When I open protools I just have a blank grey screen with the menu bar at the top. So I have no idea how to get to the instrument box you have up. I don't know why these programs have to be so complicated, I've had it nearly 3 weeks and haven't managed to do anything :(
It takes some time to navigate these softwares, take your time and explore the many functions. Its rather easy and definitely fun to work with once you understand them. I made a video about a year ago covering the basic navigation and functions of ProTools if you're interested in watching it. It'll give you a better understating of the functions and tools available. Here's the link to that video: th-cam.com/video/NiRxqLHtjdg/w-d-xo.html. To create an instrument track go to the drop down menu "TRACK" and select "NEW". From there you can create an instrument track and add a virtual instrument that you can play on your MIDI Controller. I hope this helps.
Hey dude, I've done everything, step by step and still no signal coming from my MIDI. ProTools identifies it in the MIDI setup. I create an instrument track and still no signal coming through...Any help?
@@koltonfreck if you’re using a USB cable the interface shouldn’t be involved. Make sure you have a Virtual Instrument plugin on your instrument track and that the record enable button is on as well as the output set to your monitors/speakers. Create a mono instrument track and then add your virtual instrument plug in to that particular track. Let me know if you continue to have issues, I’m here to help!
@@DezaviProductions Just figured it out. It was a volume issue. I have an Akai MPK mini. I noticed I still have to crank the volume way up as the drums and keys have a very low response.

i just read in the comment section i could try to make a mono track.... ok... hope it works but if not ièll keep trying and try to help anyone who has had the same issue haha
Hi Natasha. Perhaps as a default setting ProTools has your “Inserts” hidden. You can right click at the top between where your tracks meet your ruler where it says SENDS, I/O and choose which slots to hide and show. Does this help?
Before you do that, go to the “View” drop down menu and go to “Edit Window Views”. There you can choose which ones you can see in your edit window. These are also accesible in the mix window.
Peace be upon you, God's mercy and blessings.. Is there anyone who has an idea about programming the midi device page for protools and how to connect the Yamaha a5000 organ via the sound card with programming the midi page to the organ itself so that the protools are the master controller and the keyboard is the slave slaev?
Thank you, peace be upon you as well. Unfortunately I do not have the answer to this question at the moment. I’ll do some research myself and try my best to find a solution to your problem.
Hey, it sounds like you’re trying to add a plug-in to a routing signal. Instead click on one of the slots on the “insert” section and it will allow you to add a plug-in. Does this help?

1- MPK Mini 3 (Emulated)
2- inst 1 / plugin / instrument / Click II (Mono)... Thats the only option I get on the instrument tab :(
Then nothing happens.
@@DezaviProductions I don’t really understand 😅. I’m following each step and have the same Akai mini as the video.
I’m going to download MPK MINI EDITOR then, I haven’t downloaded any additional software 😅
😅 si actually installed a bunch of things that came with it and then uninstalled others, I might have uninstalled basic ones also 🥴
In input enable settings my screen says MPK mini 3 (Emulator) instead of just MPK mini 3 and I'm wondering if this is the problem. Thoughts?

@@DezaviProductions I've updated my firmware and thought it was going to work but it still does not work :(
I GOT IT; opening it under a mono track worked xD holy hours of frustration gone in seconds
Awesome!👏🏻 Glad to hear that!
How did you solve that? I'm still having the same problem :(
I'm having some trouble connecting my motif 7 to pro tools...I downloaded the driver and the motif shows up as checked off in the set up-MIDI-input devices menu.
Let me know if this helps, we’ll figure it out 👍🏻
yo pam

@@Definitelynotanalienoranything So simple when you know, it worked, thank you so much!
Hey dude, I've done everything, step by step and still no signal coming from my MIDI. ProTools identifies it in the MIDI setup. I create an instrument track and still no signal coming through...Any help?
What keyboard or controller are you using?
@@DezaviProductions I just got the akai mpk mini
@@DezaviProductions it’s gotta be my DAW yeah? ProTools and my interface are not getting the final from the MIDI..
Okay, and what is the plug-in virtual instrument you are using?
@@koltonfreck if you’re using a USB cable the interface shouldn’t be involved. Make sure you have a Virtual Instrument plugin on your instrument track and that the record enable button is on as well as the output set to your monitors/speakers. Create a mono instrument track and then add your virtual instrument plug in to that particular track. Let me know if you continue to have issues, I’m here to help!
And what if it still dont work?
Hi, I’m sorry to hear you’re having trouble. What controller are you trying to use with ProTools?
@@DezaviProductions Just figured it out. It was a volume issue. I have an Akai MPK mini. I noticed I still have to crank the volume way up as the drums and keys have a very low response.
I've done all that and still no sound
Sorry to hear that Micah, what controller are you using?
Novation Launchkey MK 3
I also have the Novation Launchkey MK3. Mine is the 49 key. If you have the same one, press the “Device” button under the first fader.
❤❤🎉
yeah, for some reason, i dont have any slots to choose a plugin instrument for my instrument track... even though it lists my midi mpk mini as device ... i just got protools today so its all a bit confusing lol
i just read in the comment section i could try to make a mono track.... ok... hope it works but if not ièll keep trying and try to help anyone who has had the same issue haha
Hi Natasha. Perhaps as a default setting ProTools has your “Inserts” hidden. You can right click at the top between where your tracks meet your ruler where it says SENDS, I/O and choose which slots to hide and show. Does this help?
@@DezaviProductions no sadly i dont have those options, there is no SENDS or input output, might just uninstall and reinstall a different version
Before you do that, go to the “View” drop down menu and go to “Edit Window Views”. There you can choose which ones you can see in your edit window. These are also accesible in the mix window.
@@DezaviProductions IT WORKED!!!! THANK YOU BLESS YOU
Peace be upon you, God's mercy and blessings..
When I try to enter an input, the "plug-in" option is dark, and won't let me click on it
I'm using an Akai mpd226
Any advice by any chance?
Hey, it sounds like you’re trying to add a plug-in to a routing signal. Instead click on one of the slots on the “insert” section and it will allow you to add a plug-in. Does this help?
