@@PatrickBreenMusic no problem... I got mine to play back on 2 different midi channels (ie 2 different sounds) out from Ableton, and play a third sound "live".

I would still recommend, today, for a beginner to go with a free DAW with free VSTs and an affordable controller. Probably best to spend more money on some better headphones and studio monitors, and to actually use both when creating music.
This is a pretty affordable controller as well as having built-in sounds and a built-in (crappy) speaker. But it can also run on batteries and be fully portable and usable in standalone. All-in-all, I think it’s a pretty great piece of kit for most people and for the price. But that’s just my humble and biased opinion… 😊
@@MaxOstrovtheheadyhive Yeah, the built-in sound can help sort out what you want to play when you get it connected to a DAW, I suppose. It's not much to pay extra to get the built-in sounds. Also batteries can be useful in other ways, like using it as a controller with just the midi out cable. Normally, you would need to power it via USB too. So less wires.
Everything a porn composer would ever need. >D But seriously, I just figured out what d was from adsr. After over 20 years of (amateur) music production. It’s a parabolic line that affects the way the attack reaches the maximum sustain value, slowly or quickly. A minimum value is a steeper attack at the last point. A maximum value attacks more soon but with a more gradual curve. A middle value leaves the attack line straight without affecting the shape of the attack. ‘S’ affects the maximum volume. ‘R’ effects the length of the release of the sound fading.
Hey man this is awesome I have one aswell ended up buying a volt 2 interface so I can record the keyboards internal sounds but it still ends up sounding like a default piano
Hi there! Ok, short answer is: You really only NEED one Keyboard (and "need" is a term I'd use loosely!) Longer answer: At the end of the day it's all about preference. Do whatever helps you have the most fun making music (and whatever is also within your means, obviously.) If all of your needs are met with one keyboard, then don't spend your money on an additional midi keyboard. You want to focus on features and choose a keyboard or keyboards whose features suit the music you want to make. I like this new MPK Mini Play because of the built-in sounds - it's a feature that is not usually offered with Midi Keyboards at this price. However, for someone who doesn't care about that added feature, this keyboard wouldn't make sense. If all you want is the Midi Keyboard features, you should just get the MPK Mini or something similar. Does that make sense? Personally speaking, I have a few midi keyboards in my studio that get used regularly. One has full sized keys, the second has a built in sequencer and is small enough to fit on my desk, and the third is a mini keyboard that I can bring everywhere. All three have different features but all do a lot of the same things as well. I don't NEED all three. And I certainly wouldn't spend my money on a duplicate piece of gear if there was something more important I needed for my studio. But I've accumulated these keyboard over years of making music and content, and it's nice to have 3 keyboards that offer different features. Hope that helps! (Probably more than you asked for hahah!)
I have one use case - I am using software called Grand Orgue which is basically sampled church organ and I am using two MIDI keyboards as two organ manuals.
Nice video, Patrick! Quick question, how did you use the internal sounds of the mini play III? I've hooked mine up (USB) to Logic and can't figure out how to use the internal sounds of the mini play. thanks for the video! 👍🏻
I recommend getting a 3.5mm Stereo Breakout Cable, like the one I mentioned in the video. I have one linked in the description as well. Plug the 3.5mm into MPK mini Play and then plug each 1/4 inch into an input on your audio interface.
@@PatrickBreenMusic Wow! Thanks Patrick for such a quick reply! I assumed that it would work with the iMac headphone jack (tried numerous 3.5mm cables but none worked). I'm a complete beginner with this and didn't buy an audio interface - really hoped the internal sounds would work by just connecting it to the computer, but it's much more complicated than I thought and the AKAI website doesn't really provide tutorials, so thank you so much for your help otherwise I'd be lost! 🙂 Thanks again!

I purchased the new mini play and I'm rather underwhelmed. I'm coming from a lengthy history with hardware based (daw-less) drum machines and table top synths where I would record raw audio and not use midi. I got the mini play because I assumed it would allow me to have a drum machine and synth in one device for raw audio recording as well as use as a midi controller with the included software. Well the built in drum sounds don't loop without software which essentially makes it useless as a stand alone device. I then installed and set up the included MPC Beats software but the knobs and pads don't sync/assign properly causing you to spend an hour manually reassigning pads and knobs... Only for them to not save and you have to repeat this process every time you fire up the software. I think I'm going to return it for the regular MPK Mini as this is supposed to sync right up with mpc beats and stick with my old school drum machine and synth for daw-less stuff.
Hey Ian - thanks for sharing your experience! Yeah I think you'd be happier with something that's a little more geared towards your DAW-less setup. I like the mini play a lot, but it definitely is going to make sense for someone who is more of a beginner. You're clearly working with a much more advanced setup. I also really wouldn't classify the MPK mini play a drum machine, as it doesn't have features that most drum machines have ( for example, a built-in sequencer). It has some useable built-in drum sounds and pads, but that's it. In any event, I think you're headed in the right direction for your setup. Thanks for your comment!
@@PatrickBreenMusic nice video, thinking of buying this for my niece, however like the poster mention, does this Mini Play do any looping without DAW? I think that might get in over her head.
