  • A quick succession of pendos, voyagers, and the pretendolino going full pelt through Berkhamstead, with the pendos displaying their tilt to the extreme!
Best seen in HD, unless you have a shit laptop (like me), in that case I would make do with what you get :)

It may be blind chance, but when they were overhauling the set and doing the repaint at Wabtec or Marcroft (can't remember because we used both for some of our work, and Marcroft did the Grand Central Mk 3's) I actually nicknamed it the Pretendolino and have heard that used many times since. To cap it all, I was on the first paying run to Euston and the set had a loco fail at MKC, so we ended up being detrained and sardined onto a Dusty-bin for the rest of the journey

They do a reasonable job, and have cut 40 minutes on the journey time from Carlisle to London, but I find in standard class, the Pendolinos have a poor view out of the window and the seats are quite hard. First class looks quite nice with the lamps at each table and the deep tinted glass, but not rich enough or have a concessionary card to use it.

They could have made more of the tilting technology I think. But they never managed to get the high maintenance cost down. Really a great pity especially for the UK where there are (almost) no dedicated high speed lines without those sharp angled curves. In the meantime the new generation of high speed trains all all non-tilting and most of the class 221 tilting diesels got their tilting equipment removed. I still wonder if it wouldn't be worth it to invest in a new development program for a more economic type of tilting trains for the UK. Of course now that HS2 is on the horizon they will probably do away with tilting trains entirely. Just to be clear: Don't get me wrong, I'm all FOR HighSpeed2.
