I love this Concerto. It was my graduation piece in my Bachelor of Music degree 72 years ago. It sounds more beautiful now than when i was working on it. Of course how can one compare a student to a virtuoso? Though the notes are the same the overall effect is so different. How i wish i had never stopped playing the piano. Listening to Lugansky and Fedorova inspire an old student to try again but no, listening and lmagining oneslf playing is enjoyable enough . We must admit there's a time for everything.
At 72 years old, you're still living. Maybe you don't play Rachmaninov concertos, but there is a wide chasm between that and chopsticks that leaves plenty of music to play! What's stopping you? I got my bachelor's also but due to the need to work to survive I never had a moment or access for 14 years. A few years ago I was finally able to get a piano. Fall of 2020 after brain surgery, my husband being unemployed for three months, and three family members dying including my mom, I thought what's keeping me from serious study? I found a Russian master teacher in my metro area and am learning old-school Russian technique. Give it another thought! It's not all or nothing. Try Grieg's "Notturno." Is a wonderful piece to restart playing.
Don't feel too sad, Dee. You did it, and to play such a work at any time in your life is something that most of us can only marvel. Like you, am a big fan of Lugansky and Fedorova. The cadenza of the first movement is absolutely euphoric, so dramatic and intense. Some of the best piano music ever. And this is an excellent interpretation. My piano teacher c. 1980, Mr Sokoloff from Bucks County Pa. actually knew Rach when he was associated with the Philadelphia orchestra and Eugene Ormandy in the 1930s. Sounds now like ancient history.
Rach 1 is sooo underrated imo. This great piece of work deserves a lot more attention! The structure in this piece is extraordinary clear. But great job in marking out the sections of each movement so that it is easy for everyone to follow!
Wonderful Rachmaninoff..but with Mr Lugansky and Maestro Kochanovsky I'd expect nothing less. Keeping it short..1st movement cadenza..brilliant. 2nd movement..lovely..one of Rachmaninoff's most underrated creations. 3rd movement. Sparkling clarity by the pianist, never rushed, which is often the case. Also..at 22:31 love the almost "improvisational piano playing.. Beautiful dynamics from the orchestra. REALLY nice recording as well. Thanks much for this video.
This concerto can be judged solely by how the pianist plays the middle section, a true masterpiece in all but the andante is something truly different. to be able to cut the speed and aggressiveness of the first movement, and play a smooth but colossal piece of music that has a lot of quickly changing thirds and awkward transitions through the hand, accompanied with multiple voicings. Lugansky does amazing, as does Zimmerman
Zimmerman is a favourite of mine, but I'd have to say I like Lugansky better for this piece. Zimmerman plays with a great energy which is what this piece needs, but in the cadenza, especially in the first movement, he rushes through it and loses the power and impact of these chords. Where as Lugansky is spot on with everything. Such an honour to think I once heard him live!
C'est "LE" concerto pour piano. Une pure merveille ! Si vous ne deviez en connaître qu'un seul... Magnifique interprétation de Lugansky comme toujours.
10:52 - 11:28 just gets me over and over again... I cry... Especially at 11:17, such a beautiful modulation! This melancholic climax, it's like loving someone but knowing that nothing on this planet can change your fate...
This is my favorite Rachmaninoff piano concerto and the most difficult & exhausting to play with the endless filigreed rapid arpeggios and an original cadenza of draining difficulty noz played here for obvious reasons. I believe performances should be shared by pianists on 2 separate pianos with one pianist playing the original cadenza then the 3rd movement. It is a shame that this most beautiful of the Rachmaninoff piano concertos is nearly unperformable. It really dates from 1917, ten years after his 3rd piano concerto when Rachmaninoff thoroughly revised what was an early 1st piano concerto before he sadly left Russia once and for all.

A parte la bravura eccelsa di questo pianista trovo che suoni il pianoforte con una tecnica tutta sua, senza enfasi, senza quei modi trasognati che a volte sono un po' esagerati.
