Dr. Matt thanks for the video! I have sharpened and tested a lot of blades, but the first generation Fili 14 is top and can be recognized by the absence of the "made in.. Actually a good question. We’re shaving with a single blade (not 3,4 or 5 stacked up) so we hit the whisker from 3 different directions to progressively knock it down flush with the surface of the skin. Shaving with an open blade like this yields by far the closest, smoothest shave you can get but the trade off is increase risk of nicks or cuts… but chicks dig it!😉
There are two things that I wonder about and can't figure out. (Straight razors and honing is still new to me). 1. Why is it controversial to flatten uneven spots the spine? It's been very useful for me and the only downside I can' think of is that you get some extra wear on the spine. 2. Why does it upset people when you kill the edge on the side of whetstone? I always do this to verify that the edge I'm getting is of my own making. Thanks for a great channel :)
1. It's controversial for 2 reasons. #1 is that many guys think it doesn't matter if the spine is twisted, has high or low spots as to what type of edge you produce. I call those people the flat earthers. Second is cosmetics. Putting wear on the spine ruins the aesthetics of the razor, especially if it's a vintage razor. 2. They think killing the edge is unnecessary. They believe that by doing so, you'll have to remove too much metal from the shoulders to re-create the apex which is total BS. You'll end up in the same place if you kill it or not. You're welcome Mate and stop by anytime!
Everyone is different but when the edge starts to tug or loses that easy glide. Some guys get a dozen shaves, people who claim to be the best at this claim they get 100 shaves off their razors. I think I have some learning to do to get an edge with that type of longevity!
I’ve always thought of doing a video on this topic Josh. First thing you need is a plan. You don’t want to go at your face with a wicked sharp open bladed razor without one. Draw your face on a paper and plan out your first pass. Which hand, which side, can even draw out each stroke. Tape it to the mirror and follow it like a road map. I would suggest putting a piece of tape over the edge until you can work your plan with ease and confidence. Then let ‘er rip!
@@sniperboy146096 - Keep the spine as close to your face as you can and still cut the whiskers. If you lay it flat, won’t cut. About a 1/4” gap seems about right.
Hmm…Attempts by the Honemaster Superiors Consortium to cancel Dr. Matt just because he dared to hone off a little metal to make a razor lay flat. If, and when you get to trying out and testing the use of Convexed Honing gear, I’m sure you will find the HSC is deeply forgiving and understanding…provided that you dislike and speak out against the tools and technique. Now, if you find it is something you actually like and choose to pursue…I’d say you ain’t seen nothing yet. Honing off a crowned surface triggers bipolar mind explosions in Honemaster Superiors resulting in severe selfrighteous cyberspace beatdowns that are second to none. 😎
Funny you say that. Due to my profession, when in school I forced myself to become proficient with my left hand. Would do simple tasks like brushing my teeth, eating and going to the bathroom (try it sometime😆) all with my left hand. So when I started SR shaving, the left hand followed along.
@@drmatt357 I stopped shaving with SR and moved on to DE like 10-15 years ago. But now, my kid (5yo Viktor) wants to "shave" with me every morning, so I lather us both up, so we're both "Ho Ho Ho!" (Santa Claus) and I set a small mirror for him and give him my DE without a razor - and I shave with my long-forgotten SR. And then we're both shaving and laughing like Santa and I'm all bloody, nicked, with toilet paper pieces all over my face, because my razor isn't that sharp and neither am I - not anymore. So, ofc, I have to put pieces of TP on Viktor's face, right? And then he runs around the house, asking everyone to touch his cheeks, like "look at how smooth it is". In my defense - you try shaving with a little tasmanian devil jumping around you. I'll have to hone my skill along with this solingen. Or buy one more DE. Btw - old 1920s Solingen, my grandpa shaved with it, acquired as war spoils from a nazi officer. He didn't need it anymore. Both shaving devices have a history, that's why I never bought or used anything but these two. It's nice when there's a story, right? Hey, too many words, sorry for an essay ;D Cheers!

I go straight to the Crome ox crayon after my Naniwa 12k. Super happy with my merhod
Ps , my new black Arkansas I flattened on dry emery paper on glass 220,400 grit , one side and 800grit on the other . High gloss finish.
How often must a Straight Razor be hone?
Everyone is different but when the edge starts to tug or loses that easy glide. Some guys get a dozen shaves, people who claim to be the best at this claim they get 100 shaves off their razors. I think I have some learning to do to get an edge with that type of longevity!
Tomato ??
see if the edge easily will cut the skin.
🔥 Thanks big 🏋️♂️man. I'm so glad you've lost the mankini! It's a bad look youknowwhatI'msaying. 🤣🔥
ive heard that a razor like that can get a closer shave but how do you begin learning to use this without cutting your face to heck. any tips?
I’ve always thought of doing a video on this topic Josh. First thing you need is a plan. You don’t want to go at your face with a wicked sharp open bladed razor without one. Draw your face on a paper and plan out your first pass. Which hand, which side, can even draw out each stroke. Tape it to the mirror and follow it like a road map. I would suggest putting a piece of tape over the edge until you can work your plan with ease and confidence. Then let ‘er rip!
@@drmatt357 thank you, I really appreciate it. Is there an angle I should be shooting for when using a razor or should I go flat against the skin?
@@sniperboy146096 - Keep the spine as close to your face as you can and still cut the whiskers. If you lay it flat, won’t cut. About a 1/4” gap seems about right.
With Your Skills; You should be able to keep all of Your Stones.

LOL!
If it was your wife who told you you have an #80 grit cheek, should’ve told her just wait till you get to the goatee area!😂
LOL! Wasn't my wife... she wouldn't have been so kind!
Two handed like a pro. I will never use left.
Hey, too many words, sorry for an essay ;D
Cheers!
@@m1k4c - Great story. Thank you. 😃
