  • Here are 5 things your need to know about hemp farming for both high CBD or industrial. In today's video, I head out to the University of Vermont (UVM) Hemp Conference. I learned a lot about growing hemp and starting a hemp farm in 2019. Come along and experience the conference. Interview include Dr. Heather Darby, Lt. Governor David Zuckerman and Netaka.
    About Gold Shaw Farm: Gold Shaw Farm is more of a farm-in-progress than an honest-to-goodness farm. Our dream is that someday we are able to transform our 150+ acre parcel of land into a regenerative and productive homestead and farm.

    Ive been growing hemp for 4 years now and you can grow more than 500 plants per 1/2 acre. Yes its a ton of work but just get started and love what your doing. It will come to you as you go . Ask lots of questions work on farms volunteer and learn. I grow in greenhouses and fields. 5.5 acres this year but i started out small. Lots of trial and error and im still learning. Happy hemp growing. Dont be scared just grow or help on a farm . 💚🍃🌱

I want to do anywhere between 2-10 acres or so and figured a tractor and stuff would be necessary. Any suggestions where to begin looking reliable tractors I can use to help plant and harvest? Brand names, equipment attachments, etc. I cant seem to find the information I'm looking for on google or youtube and dont personally know any farmers I can get advice. Would love and appreciation some help/suggestions/advice.. whenever you may get the chance please. Looking forward to hearing from ya, thanks

    Doing your homework is key. There are a lot of great people in the community, so definitely reaching out to other farmers and starting out with a small number of plants your first year is a great way to go. Farming is unpredictable. This last year was our first year of planting and we lost about ¼ of our crop due to a freak snowstorm in Colorado. So you never know, you could do everything right and mother nature has it’s own plans….
    Thank you for this great video. Loved the format, insights and great to see what other states are doing. Would love to attend that conference next year!

What will you do, one product or a variety, each product will need its own set up and equipment, plastics, textiles, bricks, concrete ,furniture, bio fuel, hemp seed oil for cooking, the list goes on.

    A lot of people focusing on cbd, I think the textile side has some seriously good possibilities, I think everyone getting on the same train seems like a way to reduce your profits. just a thought, look for other sales opportunities. eggs 1 basket. yeah, the more I hear the more I'd avoid the cbd trade and go for textiles! thank you for this video, great info. :) and mono culture is NOT a good idea, just saying.

    • @GoldShawFarm
      @GoldShawFarm  5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      I agree 100%. I think there is so much good potential in the industrial side of hemp. And yeah, even monoculture with a good crop (like hemp) is not a good thing. When I say you need to focus, I mean as I'm starting out. I could see a time where I added other enterprises once I have hemp up and running. But I think I would be overwhelmed if I tried to do meat geese and hemp for the first time in the same year. You've got to know your limits!

      Sure, it was competition for cotton, competition for the wood paper industry, competition for the alcohol industry. It's all about money. I don't recommend high school students smoking as it is just not conducive to productivity but THC definitely has it uses. Some have even shown it to be a stimulate for the immune system against cancer. Such a subject is almost impossible to explore since the government is hell bent on destroying ALL viable cancer treatments. See current movie about Burzynski Clinic. They have completely astro-turf-ed Burzynski's super successful cancer treatment method. The level of disinfo our own gov uses against us is outrageous since powerful interests owns it. They have created fake data within Wikipedia, fake web site data, fake lists of people he supposedly killed. They even went so far as to create trials with people with cancer and mis-dose them just to kill them and create data against him. So.... don't think for a second you will get the truth from the pharmaceutical industry, or the FDA, or our gov about anything. Don't think for second that weed is the only thing they lying to you about either. I doubt you will even see my comment here since TH-cam has consistently targeted anyone who spills the beans.

      When I was a teen i smoked a lot of pot. One thing I experienced is the the sativa was much better for my ADHD! I could focus great and wasn't lethargic. Where as the indica made me lazy and about worthless!!
      I don't smoke it anymore and haven't for the years. Even tho it's legal for recreational use in my state now.

    We will be first time growers here in TN this year. Plan on starting small 100-300 plants. We plan on starting wiith clones from a reputable greenhouse. Looking at buying plastic mulch implement with drip tape for weed control and irrigation. We already have access to disc, plow, and tiller. If hemp doesn't pan out We will use it for our vegetable garden. We have a couple of extraction facilities nearby with growing infrastructure by the day. If it goes well, we would only scale up to maybe 1-2 acres. It would be more of a hobby/supplemental income for us on our small 25 acre farm. As mentioned, the hardest part that we can see is harvesting, drying (need a lot of space) and finding a buyer (granted the crop doesnt go hot, mold, etc.). Definitely will be a learning experience, but that's why we are starting small. I think it is important to start with good genetics and start small before scaling to a manageable size. Also look at clones instead of seeds. Here in TN clones are going for.$3-$5 a plant. May look at seeds eventually. There are lot of good seed sources like Oregon cbd, etc. Biggest thing is don't want male plants pollinating your crop. Good luck! Enjoyed the video! Look forward to seeing how it goes!

    We can filter out mold and extract the bio wet. Make sure to find a processor that engineered there own equipment or has engineers on staff. The guys who buy off the shelf lab equipment, normally don't operate it correctly. Also the off the shelf stuff is too small to process hemp.
    On the farm side, I would suggest working with a consulting firm that will provide certified seeds. in return they will keep 5-10% of your harvest. Also Planting / Harvesting equipment for another % . They have already engineered or modified equipment to harvest with little loss.

    We used to use dried and chopped help stems for horse bedding. It was the best bedding. Soft but supportive, easy to use, quick to break down on the muck heap, easy to muck out, doesn't smell. We stopped buying it because it became incredibly expensive to buy because it had to be imported from France.
    In the UK you need to spend £500 to buy a license to grow hemp (industrial hemp, no or very little THC) which is the only reason we aren't growing it this year for our own animal bedding. The license fee stops it being a viable option.
    I will say though, our nearest neighbour apparently got busted by the police 3 years ago for growing full THC cannabis 😂

    If I had the land I think the way I would do it starting out is focusing on the soil and quality of the hemp. Finding the best yield vs quality formula. Having a product to build a reputation on. I wouldn't expect much profits the first season. (Which is a part of the problem in this because so much time would be invested that you would want good profit margins). Then I think it would be wise to invest in some equipment that would allow you to turn a large portion of the hemp into different types of products to sell. Then set aside a certain portion of the harvest for wholesale flower sales to factories.
    Maybe venture into the online store business with CBD products. Idk, it's easy to say this, a lot harder to do it. Farming is hard work.

    You could just start small and do a season of just seed production to use the next year, it'd save on seed cost and give some experience while not having to commit much resources. Then from that experience adjust as necessary and scale up gradually... of course, you'd need a different revenue stream or side job. Could produce some cannabis sativa also :)

      Hemp is a bio-remediator/bio-accumulator, meaning it extracts heavy metals, pesticides, etc. from the soil. The result is the plant will show high levels of these contaminants. It will not make for a saleable crop if you use it for this reason. Yes, you can use processes to remove these contaminants from the plant but it's not cheap.

    Nice video. Thanks for sharing. Yes, "growing" hemp is one thing, but harvesting, drying and SELLING are additional things to consider. Understanding your federal and local regulations is important so you don't end up with "hot" plants (THC level over their defined limit). That'll be a total loss. Selling your biomass (harvested hemp) can yield $50-$100/lb of dried flower (market rates vary widely). But if you extract the flower, you'll probably end up with an extract with THC levels well over 0.3% THC and that limits your market (you cannot cross state lines with that product). That may not be a problem if there is a big enough market for hemp extract in your state. Otherwise, you're going to have to resort to THC reduction techniques like column chromatography and/or distillation.

    This was more focused on perhaps the more lucrative side about the flowers and CBD oils. I would have like to see in the video more science facts which may have been available at the seminar. Is there research of the fibers of the plant while controlling the THC below 3% including percentage increments to 1% and what affects this has on its strength composition studies. We know with metals it has been done in metallurgy with metal alloys to create the various properties of (carbon based) steel. I read studies show fiber board from hemp is comparably strong as steel. (HAVE TO VERIFY THIS). The Seed Oils could replace dirty fossil fuel Usage. (Petroleum Industry would fight it) I say Coal Miners get out the dirty dangerous mines and in the sun to grow seeds for a clean environmentally safe oil energy source. This could be a ecological financial breakthrough, game changer, tree saver, carbon emission eliminator. NO DRILLING, SAFETY REGULATIONS AND COST FROM ACCIDENTS. Private Research that could not stopped by a powerful industry to find it this would be cost effective should be funded

      Same species of plant, but Marijuana has higher levels of THC. CBD hemp is often grown in a fashion similar to marijuana.

    • @dannyatchley5193
      @dannyatchley5193 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Larry Buckner Hemp can be farmed for the fibers or for the oil (coming from the buds). Hemp is like the cousin of marijuana they both contain CBD and THC (the psychoactive side). If you’re growing hemp for the oil the seeds have to be approved by your agriculture department before planting and must be under 0.3% THC. And by growing and cultivating (trimming the leaves and suckers like you do with marijuana) and having it on a drip irrigation, you can increase your CBD percentage. A lot is learned from trial and error. How your strains are. And how they grow in your climate. It requires around the same nutrients as corn and you plant a week or two early than you do corn. But if you grown tobacco its very similar but a lot harder. If your growing industrial hemp for fiber, they are planted real close together, several plants in a square foot. For CBD produced hemp you plant them 5ft aprart from the center and they can grow 5’ wide and around 7’ tall. The bigger your plant the more CBD you’ll get per plant. With industrial hemp the plants are a lot smaller. Now growing marijuana and hemp might look the same but are totally different in humidity requirements, soil ph, playing depth/ distance, nutrients etc. in the end harvesting the buds for CBD look exactly like marijuana buds, but wouldn’t get a fly high cause the THC is under 0.3%. But the CBD is used in food, medicine etc. it’s helps with pain, cancer patients, migraines, arthritis etc. it’s really a miracle “drug”. There are regulations and laws behind growing hemp and people think it’s really easy, but actually it’s a ton of work. So far the hardest thing is getting out in the sun everyday and cultivating each plant (roughly 2000 plants/ acre). We run a 20 acre farm and is really a lot of fun! Have any questions or regards feel free to ask.

    I'm such a pessimistic dude! My guess is that if there were any real future for hemp it would be gobbled up by Big Ag! I love the idea that a small farm can get started in this field, but seriously, I think that if the Big Ag conglomerates thought there was potential here they'd be spending big bucks on really smart people that would figure out a way to dominate the industry.
    I'd say go with tomatoes! If there is such a thing as a food desert, I live in about as opposite place as there can be. Here with a supermarket in every shopping center and literally 7.5million people on an island we have more food and people eating it than most other places anywhere. ..... I can't get a tomatoes that doesn't come from Canada! How can that be? It's NY for crying out loud.....can't anyone grow a tomato that is better that one from Quebec ..... in NY? If Hemp and or its cousin Maryjuana becomes fully legal we will still want foreign grown stuff just like we want a good French wine. I think a crop that is so easy to grow won't have enough profit margin over the long haul.
