  • Let me explain why I refuse to grow hemp this year. And what I plan to do on our farm instead. It's going to make for one weird farm business plan.
About Gold Shaw Farm: Gold Shaw Farm is more of a farm-in-progress than an honest-to-goodness farm. Our dream is that someday we are able to transform our 150+ acre parcel of land into a regenerative and productive homestead and farm.

Consider growing chickpeas. It's a much more established "venture", with equipment and buyers being a lot more available.
As more and more people stop eating meat or cut down, they're going to need lysine from somewhere else.
Lysine is an *essential* amino acid, meaning the body can't produce it by itself, it has to be in the food.
Chickpeas are by far the best source of it.
At least do some calculations on the potential/probable expenses and income.
Also, they need to dry out, which they can either do on the field, or in the barn (in case it's a rainy season).

you know I plan on getting into hemp farming and processing my plan is to grow hemp in hoop houses and process them onsite into concentrates because concentrates can sell for as much as $60 a gram currently. And if I grow 1,000 plants and subtract 500 plants for testing and personal use considering each plant can produce a minimum of 400 grams of flower buds.
That is 200,000 grams now after extraction that is still 20,000 grams considering you get a 10% return on flower after extraction so even if I sell short at $50 a gram for concentrates I produce that is still $1,000,000 gross income before taxes and everything. And I figured out even if I have 4 employees after literally everything, I am still left with $500,000 net income from one hoop house.
So, it's definitely worth it and the 2023 farm bill that is coming up will up the total allowable THC percentage to 1% total THC which is a lot more reasonable.

You and your wife are very wise to be very aware about not overextending. It's a mistake we made when starting out, and I'm still playing catch up years later. I was certainly too excited and ambitious about making a lot of dreams happen at once : )

There will always be a place for small batch boutique type products. Don't worry too much.
Try growing elderberry. Takes 3-5 years for berries. But you could do something in between. Maybe microgreens. Those are very popular.

Hemp is excellent for cleaning up contaminated & overworked soils. It's fast growth rate makes it an excellent rotation crop, reducing erosion & increasing later crop yields. I see a field of hemp as a farmer caring for the land so it can continue producing food later on.

I hope one day you go into small scale, high quality production of hemp. If you had 60 lights in an indoor setup, you could get a Quest unit for 30k and build the structure for another 20-30k, one harvest of 30% CBD flower could pay for the operation twice over. glad to see you with the geese these days!

I have no idea about the market, but hemp is very easy to clone. You might even just sell clones. As plants go, it is very easy, has high need for sun but relatively low water needs. I don’t have enough space, but it is so versatile. Something that I would look into would be clover as a cover crop and hay production. Again, I don’t know how it grows there. But if it grows well it could serve as food for both ducks and geese. Maybe the same is true with hemp, I haven’t really explored that.

Love what you're doing there! Have you looked into permaculture? Hemp pretty much grows anywhere, so it's a good 'starters plant' if you grow it for industrial purposes. Instead of clones you could grow some from seeds on cottonwool inside. Once they're plants you can take clones from them. This way you can multiply them exponentially and have a field of them up in a few years. Perhaps you could turn the fiber into hempcrete? It's a fairly cheap, easy, and nature-friendly process. If you can make a deal with a house builder somewhere, there's your first customer. Just some random thoughts. Curious to see what you'll come up with next. Keep up the good work!

I personally dont think you'll be disappointed with the geese. We have been raising them (Toulouse, White Chinese and Buff Pomeranian) for years and absolutley love them, even more so than our ducks. One thing you should research is the market for goose meat in your area. I know here in TN, it's not as common as in other areas of the country, but heritage turkey, on the other hand, demands top dollar at market. Also, do you plan on withholding a few pairs for future stock or purchasing goslings every year? If you chose to breed your own, you could select for the traits you want most from your flock instead of chancing it every year with a hatchery. Incubating goose eggs can be tricky, but is far from impossible and is amazingly rewarding. I'm glad I just happened upon your channel and look forward to seeing what's in store for your farm. If you ever need any help with the geese, I'd be happy to share what they've taught me over the years. Good luck with your newest endeavor!

Great video of the insight into your planning. Always play the contrarian and do not go rushing in. With respect to the geese you should try to increase the feed by sprouting the grain and feeding the geese barley grass, assuming they eat barley grass, that way you can feed the geese sprouted grass in the winter.

    • @GoldShawFarm
      @GoldShawFarm  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

That’s a great suggestion. I know a few other geese farmers that feed their birds sprouted grains.

Gold Shaw Farm I know nothing about growing poultry. So I don’t know what types of grass / vegetables they eat but I have eaten a lot of duck and goose over the years and like it 😂. But I do know about seed sprouting. I grow broccoli, wasabi mustard (or what passes in North America as the real thing), radish, kohlrabi, peas, barley grass (for smoothies) and red cabbage into micro greens in 12” x 24” trays. I grow these for my own use. Broccoli seeds are the most expensive, because the micro greens have proven to prevent cancer in mice, and a 1 kg bag of seeds really lasts a long time. We are talking about a year. A 5 kg bag of peas costs less than a 1 kg bag of peas but it will last me about two years. I grow in ground up coconut coir, which the feed growers do not in the videos I see, but the micro green people do. Every once in a while After I harvest I will take a tray of coir and roots and use it as bedding for my my worms after I harvest the worm doo doo. My worms live in a 18” x 18” container.
Hey maybe that’s what you can do is grow worms along with the geese. With a space that you can keep above 15 degrees those babies will multiply like crazy and the prices are pretty good.

I appreciate your analysis. I’m not a horticulturist either, and my family thinking we’ll be able to get some to work it for their share of the crop. Ha! CBD is a fad, at best I’m thinking you can sell the seeds for oil and fiber for bedding. Some industrial applications are still prospective to me and it hasn’t quite matched fiber glass in all around properties. I’ve ate the seeds before, not my absolute favorite. It’s like the plant that was almost useful. I think I may still do it because I don’t mind interacting with the local economy, I’d just need someone who wants the seeds

I know this is old, but maybe you're watching notifications. Did you happen to look into growing hemp for livestock use by chance? We were given a bag of seed recently and understand hemp is very good for livestock feed, bedding, etc. All the information I'm finding is focused on much large production for CBD or industrial ends. Supposedly, we can just throw seed out there and it'll grow like mad without any effort, but I find that difficult to believe.

Do you process everything before the "bad" weather sets in? How many months is that? Do they lay enough eggs that it would be reasonable to keep some breeding trios? What sex are the couple you have? Hemp for cbd is a high learning curve and it’s a current farming fad. Best to look to finished product for sale. If at all.
Buying clones is giving away lots of money and is the easiest part of hemp cultivation that takes very little time with an incredibly high success rate. If you can exploit the clone market, do it.

I’m not sure I agree. Hemp bud is going to explode. And buyers are going to want local organic craft bud. And once MJ is fully legal, you have clientele and can easily move into that space. Growing hemp to be processed into oil by big buyers is pointless, you will be crushed.

Morgan it's always interesting to hear what you've been up to...today is no exception! If you want a crash course in Goose Management just come down to LI and take a walk at some of our State Parks! We have goose problems all over and it boggles my mind that no hunting season has ever been tried! It's not like you need a gun or bow, just pick up rocks and you've got a great chance at landing yourself a free meal! Goose vs Duck, hmmmm, bigger bird.... bigger poop! LI was once the premier provider of gourmet Duck, hence the Long Island Ducks baseball franchise or for those old timers the NHL team that once played on Long Island also The Ducks! Duck farming eventually ended because of the negitive environmental impact it had on the tidal streams and ponds. I'm not sure what scale you'd have to grow to for profitability but have you considered the Goose Poop aspect of the endeavor? I'm thinking it's the Sh#&y part of the deal! Keep up the good work, I'm always curious as to where your heading next!

Carbon engineering is part of a solution. Okay 1 acre of hemp! Produces 3 to 4 times the amount of oxygen"as a acre of trees, at the same time sucking in 3 to 4 times the amount of carbon dioxide un oxygenated air as a acre of trees. As a added bonus it rejuvenates replenishes the soil back to Garden of paradise type quality! After every harvest' even if the landscape has been previously stripped robbed depleted of all its value from overharvesting things such as cotton corn soybeans. It has even been successfully grown and radiated soil. Equally as amazing hemp!! Makes over 26,000 different things) couple examples bio fossil fuel this type of fuel only releases the same amount of carbon dioxide un oxygenated air per mile, as a person does when the exhale! Versus coal oil gas fracking sand oil the worst of all. Which release tens of millions of years worth of petrified death! Per mile. Hemp has been proven, to be 10 times stronger 30% lighter than steel stronger lighter than concrete stronger lighter than brick' far more versatile making the design possibility practically limitless+ plus it is easier to work with on-site which would allow people to build stronger faster much more efficient at a fraction of the cost of what we are doing today. Hemp has the same nutritional value, as rice corn beans wheat barley milk . Hemp clothing distributes moisture across the body more efficiently then any other material leaving a person feeling and smelling their best even under the most extreme circumstances. It promotes good respiratory function, so if a person has asthma allergies or other breathing complications just by wearing it's clothing a person will alleviate those symptoms with the potential of diminishing them all together. And that is the short list. So your solution is good. However it is not going to create clean high paying jobs from coast-to-coast) that will improve upon and maintain the quality of our air water foods landscapes working living environment every day home products. The powers that be are motivated by money. So let them know that the real money!! Is in advanced power sources that are self sustainable renewable' new age high quality material resources substances that are stronger lighter easier to work with more versatile. Allowing people to use them as much as they would like or need without leaving any excess poison is toxic waste behind. We cannot be our best unless we improve upon and maintain the quality of life, so each person's generation may become stronger smarter healthier happier better off physically mentally financially possibly spiritually than the previous generation. As of now today's people are living dying off to a diminished quality of life compared to our ancient ancestors that existed for thousands of years in the many great ancient civilized nations. We have the manpower technology resources to make this kind of progress. And if the motivational tool is finances this is where it's at. Thank you for sharing your time here on TH-cam.
