  • Big surfs in Mini 6.50!
    Mini Transat 6.50 also known as Transat 650 is a solo transatlantic yacht race that starts in Douarnenez in France and ends in Guadeloupe covering over 4000 miles with a stop in the Madeira or the Canary Islands. The yachts are very small considering the scope of the race, and are sanctioned by the Miniclasse 6.50 organization. Miniclasse 6.50 closely monitors the craft but applies only minimal design restrictions such as length (6.5m), beam (3.0m), draft (approximately 2.0m), and material specifications, making the mini transat 6.50 an open design.
    The race runs on odd-numbered years, and the 2011 race was recently completed. Sailors had to qualify by covering one of two specified 1000 mile courses along with having 1000 miles of ocean racing experience, much of it solo.

    Rare to see a sailboat planning across the waves. Awesome boat and video.

      Um, well no it's not rare at all. In coastal winds, most any dinghy or skiff that is off the wind a bit will more often than not be up on the plane. The "not" will be exceptionally calm days. I grew up sailing & most summer days blew in a sea breeze at 20-25 knots. My brother & I did one memorable run under spinnaker at Belmont on Lake Macquarie NSW after the CHS championship race was called off due to a 40+ knot southerly buster. We sailed De Havilland Vagabond 220 named Pisces, sitting either side of the tiller with our backs against the transom & green water above the stern, almost broaching before climbing up and over the crests ahead. Good times! We had been only the 2nd boat around the windward mark & half way down then next leg before the launch caught up & announced the race cancelled. My mate sailing his Dad's home built quickcat had to phone his Dad & tell him that the pounding chop had completely peeled the side off one hull. This young fella had sailed that quickcat home on only one hull. Awesome skill, that is! A lot of boats didn't even make it through the high breaking chop on the beech that day. I'm guessing this was possibly about 1974 but I am not sure now, too long ago. We had maybe up to 2 feet of spray shooting up through the centre case, I have never been on a sail boat running that hard ever again. Got home with no damage, tough little boat the vagabond!

    I want a fast cruising boat. crazy comfort is not my priority.
    Is there any reason why I can't take a Mini 6.50 and simply make it same proportions but larger...and maintain relatively same speeds? Maybe even keep it same width, but extend it longer for more room/comfort?

    • @grgtzm4837

      But they are already available in some french naval shipyards.

      My 750 is a pure extension of its 650 version (Super Câlin). I hope to get the skills to sail it up as much as this guy one day 😉 It's very often more the man than his tool

    2nd clew point higher up allows maximum length assy sheet, from furthest back of the boat. When you want to fly the assy this high, you don´t use barberhauler to control assy leech.

    • @davidfisher7186
      @davidfisher7186 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was wondering about that. Not a way of reefing so they can get more out of their kites without being penalised for more sails?

    伸縮式のバウスプリットの長さが下手するとフォアトライアングルのフット長より長いんじゃないの?これじゃあジェネカーがとんでもない大きさになっちまうし、バウを従来通りに痩せさせると、バウ付近の浮力不足が発生するわな。そうすっと、最近見たMini6.5がシャープッドバウを選択しなくなる意味合いも判るかも

    What obnoxious music. And, yes, I could have muted it. But the sound of water and wind is such a big part of sailing and watching sailing videos for me that it reduced the experience. I am not slamming the channel. This is just one person's opinion.

    Great video, but taste in "music" is a abomination. I had to turn it off. Thank the GOP for firing all the grammar school music teachers across the USA so the super rich could save on taxes. This noise is gross! Young people are clueless as to how real music sounds!
