The lovely thing about those early LoG records is that they didn't use a metronome. It was all just organic wild energy with nothing holding it back

Kings of Groove Metal for a reason, Adler is a beast on the kit. Always loved the tasteful compression on Randy's vocals as well, this era of LoG always sparked the most intense mosh pits back in the day. Appreciate your appreciation of the rhythmic elements!

“Kings of Groove Metal” is insane when Pantera exists

nah, if the title "Kings of Groove Metal" belongs to any band, it's definitely Pantera

This is the first song of LoG that I ever heard back when this album came out. I listened to this album plus the following 2 more times than I will ever be able to count.

God, that drum fill is so legendary. I can't listen to this song without returning to that fill over and over again. So f*ckin' nasty dude!!!

Interesting fact is Devin Townsend helped Lamb of God record and mix this when it first came out.

that man is so prolific in the metal world. to be honest, the first scream in this track reminds me a lot of Devin, specifically in the SYL stuff.

unfortunately, he's also the reason why they had to re-mix and re-master it.

@@ashwilliams6844the original mix is much better, gave the album a feeling that was never captured on anything else after that

@@figu6ka379 the original mix is horrible. I will say the tone and energy was great, but the mix itself is abysmal. I'm a Devin fan and if I remember correctly, the liner notes of the re-release explained the circumstances and basically cleared him of fault in how it turned out.

@@erakattack i dont know about that, its one of my favorite mixes and gives the album some industrial feeling while remaining raw and not overproduced programmed drum machine like Ashes of the wake (which i love too regardless of that)

One reason why you might think the guitars have a brighter punchier sound is that unlike most bands, at least during this period of LOG they were using standard Drop D tuning on 6 string guitars. No crazy low tuning or 7 string guitars. So, the whole tone is naturally much higher and brighter and punchier. I think later on they starting tuning to Drop C, but at least their first 3/4 albums are standard Drop D tuning, which is rare for heavy metal like this.

I think most people who engage with music end up feeling things about the music but the lack of music education means they never get the vocabulary to properly understand it and vocalize it. I see similar things happen with film and paintings where a certain scene or artwork absolutely speaks to someone but they can't explain why -- they just have this gut feeling that something's different about it.

It's funny that the cover art of ARPB remastered looks like how I found my old Lamb of God t-shirt recently: with the print all crackled up and full of lines.

These guys were kinda the last bastion for classic thrashy groove metal. Even though they were always pretty derivative I still enjoyed them... at least in small doses. Over the courses of album they tend to wear pretty thin. I also don't think they ever bettered Ashes at the Wake and Sacrament.
I do have a fun-ish story about LoG in that I got to see them live at a local amphitheater many years ago. They were part of a pretty big metal show that included Opeth, Arch Enemy, and headlined by Megadeth. That was a pretty memorable concert for good and bad reasons... good reasons because the music from the earliest bands to the last was killer (and I was there for over 6 hours!); bad because some dude puked on my jeans and shoes (that's what you get I guess for being near a trash can!) and I got to stand in vomit for hours in 90+ degree summer sun... for over 6 hours! :/ Another thing I remember about that show is that there was some female superfan of LoG that showed up before they came on, fought her way to the front row (next to me), and left after they finished.

90 degree heat with puke shoes sounds absolutely terrible but I'm glad the concert was still worth it despite those conditions 😅
