Danke Schon! I will have a small gig this week in a book-shop for a book launch. I have a 15W Vox Valvetronix with tube preamp and i need a few tips for creating a good blues sound to go over a drum, bass, keyboard. All i have to do is make my guitar cut through the other instruments.

It is great that you do these videos and share your knowledge. I suspect that the majority of people who need this tutorial will not be playing in a large room with time to do a full sound setup/check. For most of us the only live performance opportunity is to hop up on stage for an "Open Mic" session using the house PA and with very little or no time to set up amps. What would you recommend in these situations?

Hi Mike, great tutorial, thanks a lot! May I suggest you do another on miking the amp and processing the signal in the mixer? I realize you use more than one mic. What are your preferences regarding microphones and their placement? And how do you set up the mixer, specially if you use more than one? How do you feed the signal into your guitar monitor? Lots of questions... ;-)
+Jfothe2481 Like I said in the video you must always keep in mind that many known guitar heroes typically use more than only one amp, just because of the problem you mentioned. However a good tip from my personal way of getting around this problem is to rather work with the tone and volume controls of the guitars to compensate the different characteristics. In the studio or rehearsal room of course it would be an easy task to find some knob settings on the amp you would use with different guitars. However I would not recommend fiddling around the amp knobs in live situations, things could go horribly wrong in dark environments or with flashing stage lights. Sometimes you end up cranking the wrong knobs or simply can't see what you are doing and start becoming confused. My 5 cents. :))

Good info Mike, but i have just bought a Lazy J20 tweed amp which only has a volume and treble control, still challenging to find the correct settings tho.
Tip from the manufacturer website: the interesting thing is that the both Volume controls are interactive. The Volume of the Channel you’re not plugged into has an effect on the tone/tightness of the Channel you are plugged into. In other words, if your guitar is plugged into the Bright Channel, the Normal Channel Volume affects the way the Bright Channel responds.
Great video! The section with the recorded track comparing presence/bass was really helpful. How do I go about applying this the principles in this video to a full band situation? Should I independently work on my own amp first, then try to mix with everyone afterwards?
+WNxLigerzx Myself I found out that it is the best to check amp settings only with the drummer in the rehearsal room, until he also says that the guitar sounds right to him. In a live-soundcheck situation I would recommend to communicate with the FOH sound guy too and make him aware that you are going to try out i.e. some presence settings. Ask him to give you feedback, i.e. simply what sounds good to him! Do not listen to other band members like singers, keyboard players or especially horn players - they will always tell you that you are obscenely loud and have to be turned down. HAHA ;)
Often it is the simple stuff which can help improving your live sound. :) Btw.... since the Bb-note often can make the snare of the drummer resonate/rattling hard which can be nerving, you can tell the drummer to slightly tune the snare different to get rid of this phenomenon.
Mike Burn. I have a question. When setting up a live show do you need to add bass on the guitar or do you leave it without bass and let the actual bass GUITAR take care of it?
Thank you this was helpful to me. Can you recommend a good small valve amp that is relatively low cost and has a wattage equivalent to a 30 watt solid state. That would put the icing on the cake. I guess most people watching this video are not expert at setting up amps and are probably struggling, like me, to work out which is the best little valve one to get for our cash. By rolling the volume knob on the guitar down, you are actually rolling off the higher frequencies, so the volume knob is also a hidden tone knob, everyone knows that. The only possible way to adjust the guitar volume or output signal without loosing higher frequencies is to use a volume pedal.
a volume pedal works the same way as the pots on your guitar. its basically a potentiometer in a box with a rocking platform to dial in the resistance of the pot.
Nick DeFeudis Music the difference is that your pots on the guitar are wired directly to your pickups, so the resistance actually alters frequency response. That's why some pickups work well with 250 K pots, some with 500 K. The volume pedal however maintains the original output signal from yout guitar, just lowering it's amplitude.

This is good. I need to be suportted by my amp. I have a 10 watt amp, a 15 watt amp, and, a 40 watt Fender amp. I have to choose the amp to have enough "head room" to play the room. It's sometimes - too much, not enough. Your English is lovely.

You will get the sound with a Les Paul type guitar with a humbucker at the bridge position and leaving all amp eq-knobs and the gain at 12 o'clock position. So select the bridge humbucker with the 3-way switch and (important) turn the guitar tone knob to approx. 65% position and your guitar volume to approx. 80% position. That should do the trick with a JCM900 and any other similiar tube amplifier.

Peavey or bugera do the job for cheap prices. depends on what kindoff music you make ofc. blackstar ht40 also is an option.

The two single coils are from the Seymour Duncan Antiquity series, the bridge humbucker is a german made Classic Alnico PAF by Amber.
