  • I had never watched Eureka Seven until recently. Figured that with the new film coming out this was a good a time as any to finally getting around to discussing it.

      Artydomi thats how I feel about the first season of Yu - Gi - Oh! TERRIBLE 4Kids writing, characters dont follow the rules of the game (or make up them as they go), and stretching out the duels to be as long as possible. BUT I still love how stupid it is even all these years after I first watched it on Kids WB

      BroKen honestly Eureka Fantasy Kaleidoscope Rin daughters of mynosene and black lagoon were my childhood anime. (rin daughters of mynosene i was DEFINITELY not old to watch but i did anyway and it became 2nd favorite anime ever.) right next to cowboy bebop. anyone else watch those when you were younger?

      On rewatches, I usually just start at ep 25-26 and still enjoy the hell out of it as that's about where Renten starts to grow up and isn't obnoxious anymore.

    It's a solid war story, told by children. They don't understand the world, the reveals by the adults are typically private affairs held back by trauma, and there is a active socio-religious commentary running deep in the narrative. It does have its fanservice episodes, and several weak spots in plot, but I personally believe that Eureka Seven is a show about emotion.
    I'm just a bit surprised to hear how our opinions differ.

    • @yourjunes
      @yourjunes 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      It is also a story about breaking out of cycles of violence. The ending where Eureka and Renton literally disarm everyone in the conflict is a slap in the face to all the bitter, old, vengeful adults with their post-war ideologies. It's a fantastic coming of age story that says to the next generation: "Pave your own way, don't fall to the cynicism of your elders, be better."

      I like how in the beginning they are fighting the military with no real motivation. Their just a bunch of war-bitter renegades who left for personal reasons and stole a ship and Im assuming where they got their LFOS...Then throughout the show when the big bad becomes more of a threat they become more heroes of the story and find more things to fight for other then themselves

      *SPOILERS*
      ,,,
      YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED
      I like the fact that, regarding the romance, their care for eachother also comes to the point where Renton is willing to put aside or throw his ''humanity'' (I don't really know how to better define it atm) away and that the ''power of love'' can surpass all boundaries even over what are basically aliens species (Eureka a scub - Renton a human ). While Eureka is pushed to basically leave the scub's family and live among humans in order to (kinda?) fully become one.
      Its also part a commentary on Environmentalism, where Eureka (and other characters, including Nirvash ) is in fact a way for the planet to try understand speak with the humans and to which all the events that lead to the ending.

    Personally I think you hit the nail on the head when it comes to the idea that it's enjoyable *because* of its flaws. It feels like a natural bond, a real bond, formed through like and dislike, annoyance and appreciation, hate and love. It's a journey, and when you get to the end, you feel a sort of satisfaction like nothing else. The characters feel human, immature sure, but they seem like an actual bunch of people thrown together with no idea what's right and wrong, and a world that doesn't necessarily accommodate their wishes or plans (which is something I've seen a fair few times), but leaves them be when the viewers need rest.

    • @GrooseyGroose
      @GrooseyGroose 6 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Even with the praise, I think people don't give this show enough credit. The sheer amount of depth and attention to detail in the writing is unparalleled, to the extent that I've also watched the show at least 5 times and yet still learn something new every time.
      The characters are so unbelievably human; the writers were not afraid of depicting how horrible people can be, but if you can try to see things from the characters' perspectives you can understand that they're all trying their best to do what they believe to be the right thing. The dialogue was deliberate and complex, using silences so effectively that they were just as telling as words.
      There was so much symbolism and hidden themes in the story as well, one of which most seem to overlook being the kids. People tend to write them off because of how annoying they are, like kids in real life, and scoff at the conflict they cause, especially at the very end. However, I believe they serve a crucial purpose in the main theme of redemption, that anyone deserves happiness so long as they earn it. They are not there to punish Renton by annoying him, but rather to punish Eureka. They serve as a reminder of her crimes, which although she committed in ignorance of the significance of life and death are crimes nonetheless, and lead her to constantly question whether or not she deserves happiness. When they learn to truly understand how much she truly loves them and desires their forgiveness, they release her of her burden and approve of her happiness.
      I am disappointed that GR never paid much attention to these complexities, though I can definitely agree that there are pacing and focus problems in the show. However, I have yet to find another journey as emotionally involved and so lovingly packed with substance.

    • @heygirlsup1820
      @heygirlsup1820 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree. At first I was fascinated by the colors and world, then I was annoyed and grew to hate Renton and others but for some reason I couldn’t stop watching, then I fell in love with it and so forth. It’s like the ups and down of real life and real friendships etc. it’s so visceral.

    I loved this anime because it showed a character who cried when things got tough, but kept pushing himself further for the people he loves. As a kid I cried a lot, was just something I couldn't control. This is just one example why this anime struck such a chord with me in my teenage years. When I rewatched it years later, it didn't as much. I think this anime is great for teenagers

    This is probably one of the few anime I've watched and hold so high because of nostalgia. I'm not gonna say it's perfect (even though I gave it a frickin 10 on MAL >.>), but this perhaps the only anime where my sentimentality overrides my reasoning, because I first watched this series when I was starting to come into my own as an anime viewer and it kinda helped mold who I've become. It's most definitely a flawed show, so many anime have had better narratives, better love stories, better MCs aling the same vein as Renton, but through all the flaws, it's still a series I love and hold dear to my heart.
    Good review man. Keep it up!

    This is, and probably always will be, my top anime of all time, and even with that, I respect your thoughts on the show. I think anybody who claims their "thing" is literally and wholly perfect are lying to themselves and others. The Diet episode, and Soccer episode, are the purest forms of trash filler I have ever seen. I always skip them when I decide to watch this show once a year. As far as Renton's dub voice being Johnny Yong Bosch, in the bonus extras they did an interview with him about the process. In the interview, he says that he was not actually the first choice to voice Renton, and was brought in after the first voice actor, who he refused to name but said they are well known, had to step down about a quarter way into production. I feel like that lends a bit to why his voice sounds awful because he was never supposed to play Renton in the first place. Thanks for taking your time to watch, and review, this anime Arkada!

The entire opening and ending music have been on my playlist for years. I hope y’all love this anime as well. I was waiting a long time for Glass Reflections to make an Eureka Seven video. As a die hard fan of Eureka Seven, it being my favorite anime, I know the flaws. The sign of a good anime in my eyes isn't a perfect one, granted none can be truly perfect, but one with many flaws but still captivates and grips the hearts of the viewer. When I was young Eureka Seven was the first anime I actually watched in its fullest. From time to time my father showed me anime like Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away (as examples of movies) and Robotech as a tv series, but they didn't grip me at that time. Granted, nowadays I have more appreciation for them, but as a kid they didn't grip me. In came Eureka Seven, and from the first episode made me wonder why? I had so many questions but these questions kept me curious about the series as it went on. I watched the anime from start to finish an episode everyday when it was shown on Toonami, around the time when I was actually around Renton's age, so I was able to sympathize and connect with the main character. During that time I started getting actually interested in girls my age, and seeing how Renton, this geeky weird kid progress through his relationship kinda gave me hope. What the series did wrong I cringed at but it got me ready for the next story-driven piece. I, to this day, know Eureka Seven was and is not perfect, but this is the only anime I've ever re-watched to the extent to fully grasp what is my favorite anime of all time. I have lost count of how many times I've watched Eureka Seven, but I stopped counting when I've watched the entire series 50 times, in a sort of goal since there was 50 episodes, and yet I still go back, either to make videos on my other channel, to laugh at the things many of us laugh at the English dub for, but I still have not stopped loving this anime. I cannot wait for the three movies, even though they said they're changing the ending, but I still want a fresh take on the anime that really brought me into loving anime, my gateway of sorts, named Eureka Seven.

      I think of them as kind of a ruler with which to measure Renton's development. In the beginning he's interacting with them a lot on their own level, showing that he's very much still a kid. Towards the end though he's matured a lot and his interactions with them reflects that.
      They are annoying as hell though.

    Episode 20 to this day is one of if not the best character development episodes in anime.
    Holand's devotion to Eureka is finally fully shown
    Talho's finally opening admits that Holand cares more about Eureka then her
    Renten finally realizes that he is a burden (he's not when you look at the anime as a whole due to the role he fills, but at this point we don't know that)

    Eureka Seven was my first “romance” anime and watching it when i was 10-12 i knew it would stick with me. Its just so heartwarming when it comes to the love of Renton and Eureka and their bond with Nirvash. I will say that Renton was sorta annoying, he is a child and children are obviously more emotional than adults because they haven’t experienced life. I really felt like Renton at times, Adults not listening to him, loosing his family (no one in my family has died but we are broken up) and just the crush he had on Eureka resonated with me and still does. Its my top 5.

    I fondly remembered the show because of the sense of freedom the characters showed early on, and the sense of family as things continued. I also remembered the show where I hated Renton and Eureka's english voices. But regardless, the show held a place in me despite me not remembering exactly how things progressed. Overall it was nice, but there were episodes where it made me question if there was a point.
    I never considered rewatching Eureka Seven until I saw the first episode in japanese dub, where I was surprised that my impression of both Renton and Eureka was completely different from the english dub, and prefer those two in japanese than english. Just first episode alone, Renton felt more rebellious than whinny, and Eureka sounded more awkward and airheaded than a drone. I haven't gotten to rewatching the series, however, so I can't say how the other voices were like.
    As for the news of E7 being a movie, I don't think I want to watch it. I agree with your point that what attracted me to the show was the flaws, and it makes me afraid of what the movie would do to my impression with the show (cough, AO).

    Short answer: yes.
    Long answer: yes, but it has some pacing problems and convoluted plot elements in the middle. Oh, and dub Renton is really bad. I tried the dub, and I usually like dubs, but Renton's voice pissed me off.

    • @TommyB122

      Johnny Yong Bosch actually replaced the person who was originally cast for the role at the demand of the Japanese studio. They didn't think the voice was high enough. As a result, the directors of the dub told him to pitch his voice up very high in fear that the studio would disapprove. He was eventually instructed to lower his voice towards the mid-end point of the series. I think it's refreshing when a male with a wide range voices a young character that grows older over the span of a show and they adjust their pitch to accommodate. As whiny as his voice for Renton, I honestly think it's one of his best performances.

    • @MasaomiKida251

    eureka seven was one of the first anime i remember watching regularly, and while it's not a perfect series, it still holds a special place for me. also, i don't think i've seen a show since then that really captured such a great sense of flight and aerial combat. you really feel the weight and friction of the mech's as they're flying and surfing, and that kind of aesthetic is a big part of what stuck with me about the show.

And yet anytime "Truth" track plays (such as at 4:40), the entire episode 20 action sequence immediately flashed between my eyes, and the other two amazing tracks "Sprinting Spirits" and "Spontaneous Discharge of Ego" from the same episode play in my head alongside "Truth". I have only watched the show once, and I have other favorite anime OST pieces that I can immediately associate with corresponding titles, but somehow it is only E7 that has an entire episode with 3 musical tracks hard-burned into my soul.
