    Never knew this 5.7 had a bleeder valve. I definitely think you are a lifesaver. My engine didn't overheat, but the coolant reservoir acts like it wants to explode everyday. It's hot here in Texas, so I had to flush, and now bleed. I certainly hope that resolves the issue.

    This video saved my day! For some weird reason my 2006 Jeep commander started over heating after getting it about a month ago(with no issues) it did not boil over or loose coolant! No engine lights, no sputtering! Just the temp gage went to red. So my dad and I replaced the thermostat. Which looked band new! So we replaced the water pump. It looked good when we got it off. Also the ECTS. Still over heated after adding 50/50 coolant! Then! I Found this video! So thanks!

    working on a 5.7 Hemi dodge charger police edition. Vehicle was over heating while my daughter was driving. Thank God she pulled over and turned off the car. It did get hot enough to hiss from the radiator cap and spit out some coolant. I put a new thermostat and radiator cap. Car still overheated but temperature gauge was still in the middle. I believe air is in the system so tomorrow I will bleed it cold just like this video and change our the fan. Its one big fan....not two. I tested the fan by running a wire from the positive side of the battery to the positive side and the negative to the negative side of the plug in of the fan. Two wires going into a three prong but I aligned them with the wires. Fan wouldn't cut on. Fans wasn't working while car or AC running. No crack head or anything. No milky color on dip stick or inside where you pour in the oil. Coolant not leaking and water pump sounds fine. I'm thinking it has two issues.....air in the system and a bad fan. Will fix tomorrow. Your thoughts?

      Something you should also do while the car is running,turn on your heater in your car,that will open up your thermostat and will let you get the proper amount of coolant in your moter and also give you a more accurate level when filling your car with antifreeze,I did learn that.

    Video is 5 years old but still very helpful. For anybody doing this on a jeep commander you will have to remove the box connecting to your air box and your throttle body to get to the bleeder valve. Once that box is out the way it’s clearly visible just like in the video

    I love it. I've had my nitro for a year and was pleasantly surprised that the 3.7 has a simular plug. It seems that all newer chryslers do. I use to do a simular procedure on previous cars by pulling an upper heater hose. I had a bad overheat once due to following the "run with the cap open" method.

    • @MotorCityMechanic
      @MotorCityMechanic  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Thanks a million my dude. My heater stopped blowing hot air so I replaced the thermostat...still didnt work. After a little research I stumbled upon this and tried it. There must have been a sizeable air bubble trapped because once I took out the plug I was able to add another 1/2 gallon of coolant and hot air returned! Subbed.

    Jiffy Lube refused to flush the coolant in my 07 Charger 5.7. Something about a TSB. Now I know why. They cannot or will not bleed it. I was adding refrigerant to my A/C and cracked the reservoir cap open. Apparently, I pushed air into the system somehow and it boiled over (read fine on the gauge) the next day. I parked it and will try this bleed procedure. Thank You for the fine video.
    FOLLOW-UP! The bleeding process worked. The air pocket was the whole problem.

    • @MotorCityMechanic

      Companies like Jiffy Lube have some many rules about what they will and what they wont work on. Glad that you searched online and found my video. I may have stumbled on a better way. Last year when I had to replace my radiator, I left the upper radiator hose connected to the radiator. I pulled it up as high as I could and filled it up that way until the antifreeze started to come past the thermostat (it was bad and I didn't realize it at the time) today I replaced the water pump and filled it up the same way only I knew I would have to burp it. I took the bleeder screw out and I couldn't get much more than a spoon full before it was running out and that's with the front of the car jacked up. I'm sitting in it letting it idle now, have been for 30-45 minutes alternately running the heat and A/C to see if it'll overheat but it's running just fine, temperature is dead in the middle just like always.

    Used the bleeder valve. Easiest way to bleed a cooling system. I wish ALL cars had a bleeder valve to bleed the systems of air in the cooling system.

    Thanks David for sharing. My reservoir was bubbling after a test drive . I replaced the water pump initially and the bearings were terrible on the old pump. I put it back together and do a test and it begin to boil in the reservoir. I went to purchase a hex bit to bleed the pump. I poured 50/50 in and later it begin to come out the port. Now what? Help please. I have not started it and where is all that antifreeze going ?

    Hi David. Very informative video. Thanks!! What about air removal/purge of the air from the hose side of the thermostat? I recently replaced the alternator and for easier removal, removed the hose and housing connected to the thermostat. I didn't think of any air being trapped in that line, and the car seems to run around 219° now, so I quit driving it until I can solve the higher temp problem. Thanks!!

    I fill the coolant through the upper radiator hose when it’s disconnected. Fill up the reservoir and let the engine run with the cap off

    After replacing a head gasket on a 2007 5.7 Hemi this procedure seems to have fixed an overheating issue but not the no heat in the car issue.
    Yes I have the fan on and set to defrost.

    • @MotorCityMechanic
      @MotorCityMechanic  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      If no overheating and no heat....I wonder if there is a blockage in the heater. Not sure if you have driven the car yet. If air is trapped in the heatercore then a good drive might help. Feeling both heater hoses will let you know if a blockage. What was the reason for headgasket replacement?

    • @Jdmtunerlover

      Might be the the air door actuator. Challenger has 3, pretty sure its the one on the heater, the hardest one to replace

    I've never owned a mopar until I go my '08 300C (5.7L V8). It recently began to overheat but heat still blew HOT air. Took it to the dealer since I can no longer work on my own cars (arm was paralyzed in accident). I could CLEARLY see the waterpump leaking. Heater still blew HOT tho. Took to mopar ONLY dealer. they replaced wtr. pump, and "replaced" my thermostat & "replaced" some electronic temp. sensor even tho the heat gauge (both analog & digital) were still working fine! IMMEDIATELY on the way home, I noticed it only blew hot air if accelerating. Whenever I'd stop at stopsigns/stoplights, air would IMMEDIATELY start to blow colder and colder. Started overheating again AND now my "heater" won't even blow LUKE-WARM air.. AT ALL, EVER!!!
    ***COULD I HAVE AIR BUBBLES TRAPPED IN MY HEATER CORE, AAANND MY THERMOSTAT???***

    • @MotorCityMechanic
      @MotorCityMechanic  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Its very possible. I have learned that even if its a dealer it doesnt mean that the mechanics working on it are any better then any other shop. Sounds like they replaced alot of items that typically dont go bad. They may not have gotten all the air out the system.

    Hello my friend I'm glad I came across your video I need a bit of your advice if you have the time I own a beautiful 2006 Chrysler 300c with the 5.7 liter hemi my Upper radiator hose is going out and I'm going to need to replace it I like to know how I should remove all my antifreeze since I'm going to add some after the work is done I might as well drain all of it

    • @MotorCityMechanic
      @MotorCityMechanic  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The radiator has a drain on the passenger side but it can get sketchy as the vehicle gets older. If your replacing the upper hose then I would recommend replacing the lower hose as well. Being that we might be doing that....I would place something to catch the antifreeze under the vehicle and then take the lower hose off and catch the antifreeze that comes out of there. Its the method I recommend on the higher mileage vehicles. Thanks for asking and make sure to subscribe.

    Here is my biggest question for this procedure and apparently the costliest. I am a Mopar guy and always used stock Mopar parts and fluids on my vehicles not only to preserve originality but to save a lot of headaches. When you say refill with your 50/50 coolant to which coolant are you referring to? Chrysler claims that using anything other than theMopar pink organic blend will damage their cooling systems. I tended no to think it was an upsell because the dodge mechanics where I worked would become physically ill if a customer told them they had put in some generic brand. Anything under warranty would be voided as well.
    Another tip for the 5.7 l Hemi. Keep it full of fresh clean oil and minimal hot idling time for the MDS models especially helps compensate for the poor lifter lubrication that leads to cam and lifter failures (one of the Hemi ticks). Also read the owner's manual regarding fuel. It will tell you that it will run on 87 but is actually tuned for 89 octane. Running on 91 or better on a factory tune is warned against. Everyone I know who had a first gen 5.7 l ran right down and filled up with high test but after a couple tankfuls caught a check engine light. They also do no like high ethanol blends. Cost me a burned out fuel pump to learn that one of the only rural stations nearby me at the time was using mostly corn ethanol to boost their 87 to 89 octane. They charged the same price for 89 as 87 so I thought it was a no brainer. What is it they say about a deal that is too good to be true? Lol

  • @jeffarthur322

    Apparently the radiator drain is hidden & power steering reservoir needs to be moved to gain access to drain.

    Great video. I have a 2014 Charger 5.7 hemi. I have a coolant smell that is coming into the car and it last for less than a minute after driving it and it's at a standstill. I have the heat on. I took it to 2 different dealerships and both of them did a pressure test and it held. Both the dealerships test drove it and couldn't smell anything. They told me nothing is wrong and there was no coolant leak. I still smell the coolant smell today. Any ideas of what could be going on? Everyone keeps scraping their head.
